SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT TRAINS ATHOLINE WAKEFIELD: American History. Honors American History; Howard College, A.B.; Head—Social Studies Dept. MARGUERITE HILL: Eco-nomics; Howard College, B.S History,' as Toynbee wrote, docs not propose to contain the answer to man’s problems, but it docs offer various suggestions, one of which might very well be the solution. In recent years, the full meaning of these words has been understood by the students of Valley; we have seen the assassination of a President, the entrance of Red China into the nuclear club, and the growing war in Vietnam. It is the task of the history teacher to show the relationship of past to present and impress upon the student the necessity of a sense of history' in a highly complex world. With the combined study of history and current events comes the realization that only through understanding of the past can there be hope for the future. It’s fun and games” lime again (in other words, test day) in Mrs. Collier's American History Class. Not pictured: JANIEL ZOPFI: World History. SHIELDS PARKER: Ancient Sc Medieval History'. A.P. PROMOTES PRECISE THINKING 'Carry the one? Gee, I never thought of that. Miss Whaley and her class discuss subjects tangent to math. Mathematics , as Bertrand Russell wrote, possesses not only truth, hut supreme beauty .. . sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.” These words underline the sentiment of the Mathematics Department of Shades Valley. Mathematics has always been considered the best developer of logical thinking, a quality more than ever in-demand. Valley's Mathematics Department offers courses ranging from algebra to the more abstract calculus. Their value is twofold: first, they acquaint the student with fundamental concepts of mathematics and second, they teach discipline and the value of logically constructed thought.
