DIRECTS VALLEY FORTUNES Mr. Ledbetter’s colorful background and sense of humor quickly made him a favorite among students and teachers. The newest member of the administration staff has shown both disciplinary will and understanding in his daily conferences with students. Mr. Ledbetter not only brings a keen mind but also a unique background to Shades Valley. In college, he lettered in three of four sports. In later years, he was a coach and a professional baseball player. The field of athletics, however, is not his only strong point, for Mr. Ledbetter is listed in Who’s Who in American Education and Who's Who in Contemporary Writers. VIRGIL LEDBETTER Arkansas State. Besides caring for the school’s finances, he also must oversee and coordinate the financial transactions of all clubs and the Student Council. TOP-NOTCH ADMINISTRATE Much of the credit for Valley's reputation as one of the nation’s top schools must go to Dr. Frank A. Peake, who foi seventeen years has been principal of Valley. Dr. Peake makes it his business to represent Valley and Alabama at the various associations of ’which he is a member. Some of the organizations are the State Course of Study Committee which insures for Valley the most advanced methods of study, the National Council of the National Honor Society, the National Commission on Safety Education, and both the National and Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals. Dr. Peake’s illness and absence of several weeks this year served to make all aware of the numerous essential duties he performs in order to make Valley' function smoothly. Dr. Peaks and Governor Wallace congratulate Herbie Stiles at the 1965 graduation 12 ceremony.

If there are any unsung heroes at Valley, they arc the counselors, for each year they supervise the arduous process of college applications, not to mention subject choices, careers, tests, and personal problems. Despite the increasing number of students, our counselors strive to give each student the time and interest he needs. Even before the curriculum was defined, Dr. Peake established the counseling department because of its intrinsic importance to the welfare of the student body. The job of the counselors is a never-ceasing one, but the high percentage of Valley students that go to distinguished colleges is a reflection of the high quality of this department.
