Beginning her Mountie career with the opening of school in 1949, Miss W haley has taught mathematics to many past classes and now heads the Mathematics Department. Graduates of her classes have been a triumph for the school. Before coming to Valley, Miss W haley taught in Tarrant at Jefferson County High School. She has also taught at the University of Alabama and at the University Center in Birmingham. Outside classes. Miss W haley has graciously worked with the seniors on the Cap and Gown Committee and has always been willing to attend school events as an active supporter. For her many contributions to Shades Valley in the past fifteen years, the Tower staff dedicates the 1964 annual to Miss Volena Whaley.

Shades Valley has been led to its current scholastic position by its administration. Without able leadership. many of the honors and citations received by the school would have gone to others. Always looking to the future, the people who guide the Mounties in their everyday studies have for fifteen years kept up with the latest educational processes. It is the labor of these executives which has made for Shades Valley the reputation it enjoys as one of the most modern and efficient high schools in the area. The role of our office is not easy, but it is a very vital one for the constant progress of the school.
