MATHEMATICS Shades Valley is very proud of its mathematics department. Its course offerings include not only first and second year algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry and college algebra, but also an introduction to the calculus, which was introduced at Shades Volley three years ago, and gave Valley the distinction of being the first high school in Alabama to offer the course. Every course in mathematics is taught with the modern approach in keeping with the trends recommended by the Commission on Mathematics under the sponsorship of the College Entrance Examination Board. Shades Valley graduates who hove taken the entire mathematics program hove in many instances been placed in sophomore mathematics courses upon entering college, and hove received college credit for their freshman courses. In Physics the primary objective is to provide the students with o working knowledge of the fundamental principles that describe all physical phenomena. This is achieved by studying not only the theoretical aspects but also the practical aspects. In the field of biology we strive to help them meet the problems of life through available scientific knowledge and to apply their knowledge to everydoy experience; to develop an awareness of themselves and their surroundings; to develop an appreciation for the beauty of the living world and a practical knowledge of nature's plan. We work toward these objectives through individual and group research, by having them watch for new developments in the different fields of science and by experiments. These are some examples of how these objectives are met.
