Nor will the story end here but continue with the life and spirit of our school. It is a story in pictures and words of life at Shades Valley. The plot will be as we make and mold it; the characters are the students and the faculty, working in cooperation; and the theme is to be found in the hearts of each of the characters. We dedicate the 1959 TOWER to the spirit that has grown in our school—to the spirit of friendliness among the students—to the spirit of harmony in our activities—to the spirit of a true desire to learn— and to the spirit of sportsmanship that is developed on the athletic fields. This is the spirit we have learned to love and live; it has grown and developed with our school. We are dedicating our TOWER to the memory of this spirit in the past and presonf, and to its continuation in the future. OUR PRINCIPAL Dr. Frank A. Peake, A.B., M.A., LL.D. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT English is the basis of all our communications. The student must be able to read accurately and to interpret what he has read in order to master any subject. He must be able to express his ideas correctly in a clear concise manner. Therefore the English Department aims are: To fit youth for the four common skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing; To stimulate o desire to choose the better books, radio and television programs, ond movies; To understand the relation of the language arts to all phases of life. During three years in our school, a student has a thorough course in grammar, composition, and literature in which we teach the cultural and social background of America and England through the history and writings of their great poets and novelists. In Physics the primary objective is to provide the students with o working knowledge of the fundamental principles that describe all physical phenomena. This is achieved by studying not only the theoretical aspects but also the practical aspects. In the field of biology we strive to help them meet the problems of life through available scientific knowledge and to apply their knowledge to everydoy experience; to develop an awareness of themselves and their surroundings; to develop an appreciation for the beauty of the living world and a practical knowledge of nature's plan. We work toward these objectives through individual and group research, by having them watch for new developments in the different fields of science and by experiments. These are some examples of how these objectives are met. STANDING: Mf. Arthur Cobb, Mr . Ruth Maxwell, Mr . Elizabeth Bullock, Mr. Williom legg . . . SEATED: Mr . Every course in mathematics is taught with the modern approach in keeping with the trends recommended by the Commission on Mathematics under the sponsorship of the College Entrance Examination Board. Shades Valley graduates who hove taken the entire mathematics program hove in many instances been placed in sophomore mathematics courses upon entering college, and hove received college credit for their freshman courses. Fifty-six girls competed for the title at The Club. A panel of judges graded each girl on beauty, charm, and personality; and selected a Miss Shades Valley and a Senior, Junior, and Sophomore Alternate. Six seniors were also chosen to be featured in the TOWER as Senior Beauties. The TOWER Staff hopes that this contest will become o tradition and that in the years to come many more Miss Shades Valleys will be chosen that are as lovely and charming as this year's winner.
