MISS DINNIE MAY MACKEY Five years ago a magnificent building was erected, Shades Valley High School. In the beginning this mass of bricks and steel had no heart, no warmth, no undefinable something thot makes an organization work. Then into its classrooms and corridors come a faculty thot can never ogain be equaled, and suddenly the building was alive. Outstanding among the members of our faculty is a teacher who will live forever in the hearts and memories of Shades Volley High School. She has not only been a splendid instructor, but olso on inspiration to all through her devotion, friendliness, and untiring efforts for the betterment of the school. Birmingham-Southorn Amorican History ELIOT DOUGLASS WILDER Class of 1952 in II h II II It I I tl The memory of Eliot Douglass Wilder will live forever in the hearts of those who knew him. He was respected and admired by all for his straight forward courage, high morals, and unceasing loyalty. These things also made him a leader in everything that he undertook. Eliot's activities and honors at Shades Valley exemplified the promise of his youth. He was the Battle Tour winner, recipient of the Harvard Book Award, first vice-president of the Student Government Association, and a member of the National Honor Society. He was president of the Debators, vice-president of the Thespians, business manager of the Valley Echo, Governor of the YMCA Youth Government, and a founder of the Camorgo Club. He was also active in athletics, having been a member of the basketball and track teams. Eliot went from Shades Valley to Harvard University on a four year scholarship. The world was not given a chance to know the great potentialities of Eliot Wilder, we in the Valley feel that his death was a loss to all mankind. OFFICERS COURTENAY RENNEKER TOPS CHEW KITTY MONROE GAIL BRIDGES NOWLIN KEENER President 1st Vice President 2nd Vice President Secretary Treasurer Whereas the students of Shades Valley High School desire to provide for the systematic management of student affairs, to encourage the practice of good citizenship, and to promote student participation in all the activities of the school; We, the students of Shades Valley High School do establish his Constitution. So begins the Constitution of the Student Government Association which forms the nucleus of the student activities at Shades Volley. Its importance and power as a governing body is great. This year the group planned all osssembly programs and the Homecoming activities. They sponsored the football dances, Twirp Week, the Valentine Dance, ond the Presidents' Banquet. They also published the Red and Black, and sold Shades Valley Cops, pennants, and sweofers, ond were responsible for many other student benefits. Hayes' determination ond strongth gavo us addod ability at ho guard posts. Ho showod fine spirit all through the season. Nowlin Keener—Senior 190 lb'.. Nowlin, big ond rugged, wos us?d at both tackle and guard. His fine play earned him a scholarship to the University of Mississippi. He will be missed next year. Bob Kidd -Quarterback Senior —A slick ball handler and exceptional play caller. Bob will bo missed next yoor. John Moynord -Tackle—230 lbs. —Senior. This was John's first year with the team, but his hard work and willingness to learn made him o valuoblo reserve. Mike Meatheringhom Tackle—215 lbs.—Senior. Big Mike sparked the team the first part of the season, but his valuable service was missed in the lost few gomes duo to a kneo injury. He received a scholarship to the University of Georgia for his fine work. V Steve Morton -End- 165 lbs. -Senior. Steve missed most of the sjo-son bccouse of a back injury. His hard work ond fine spirit will bu greatly missed next year. Billy Turner—Fullbock—Senior- Moon's speod and deception made him a valuable ployor all season. Denny Richardson—Halfback -Junior—Hard running and deodly tackling were two reasons that Denny mado his opponents respect him. He should bo even greater next year. Dave Sington—Center—220 lbs. —Junior. Dave's quick thinking and hard tackling made him the best tackle on the toam. Great things will be expcctod of him noxt season. Mark Wagner—Halfback—Junior —Although one of the smallest men on the squad, Mark played an important position in the reserve role. Billy Winford—Guard—160 lbs —Junior—Chosen for the Second All-County Team. Billy showed spcod and outstanding blocking. He Is agressivc on defense and has tho will to win. TOMMY DEEN—Tackle—220 lbs.—Sophomore—Tommy wos praised by all for his fine relief work. He is depended on for next year very much. HENRY DENMAN—End—170 lbs.—Sophomore—Henry's fine pass receiving and hustle makes him a prospect for a fine end. BOBBY IRVIN—Tackle—175 lbs.—Sophomore—Bobby is a scrapper from the initial to the final whistle. He will be back again next year. Great things are expected of him. 1S53 If” FOOTBALL SQUAD Under the direction of Coach Jerry Oxford, who also coached the basketball team to third place in the state, the B team had a very successful season. Winning six of eight games, the team will contribute much to Coach Barrington's varsity next season. Outstanding omong prospects who will go up to the varsity are Bill Knight, Borry Morton, Gary Draper, Ray Atkins, David Williams, and Tommy Allen. Other members of the team included: Russell Stuts, George Hayden, Charles House, Mike Krowcheck, Mike Fry, Charles Hester, Bobby Baumgartner, Jack Rogers, John Porter, Johnny Thornton, Steve Sokol, Jimmy Gwin, Freddie Rothe, Warren Stapp, Robert Owen. Managers for the team were Freddy Renneker and Wayne Dawson. Although the B team does not get the publicity which other teams do, the importance of their hard work cannot be over estimated.
