Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1953 volume:

j short years . • • . The 1053 Published By The SENIOR CLASS 1953 HOMEWOOD, ALABAMA Volume 4 Member of Southern Interscholastic Press Association VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL RECORDS THE STORY Dedication This Senior Class holds an enviable and unique place in the history of Shades Valley. We are the only closs which began its high school life with the life of the school, and will always be the only one. In this respect we are the first true graduating class. We would like for this annual to be not merely a chronicle of the accomplishments of individual members of the Senior Class but rather that this book shall be the history of the struggle of a new school that literally rose out of the mud, ond has now graduated to great heights. Throughout these four eventful years we have had the inspiration and guidance of two wonderful people, our counsellors, Mrs. Ouida Hightower and Mr. Horton Chamblee. It is indeed fitting that we should dedicate this annual to these two, who have guided us from the very first. Their brilliant minds and understanding hearts have made our years here more fruitful and pleasant. We are very proud of the guidonce program of our school. It has received both state ond national acclaim. Mrs. Ouida Hightower, the counsellor for girls, has been well trained for this service. She has a splendid educational background, but better still she has the humanness so needed in this position. She is alwoys the understanding friend, adequate in any situation. We go to her with all kinds of problems —courses of study, boy and girl problems, parent problems, business problems, school problems. She always manages to smoothe them for us. Truly, she has served as a friend to us. always potient, always kind, always ready to listen, always ready to advise. Mr. Horton Chamblee is also peculiarly fitted for his position as counsellor for boys. He is scholarly and an excellent teacher, but most of all he is understanding. He is every inch a man, but has the rare ability to get down on the boys' level in understanding their problems. We hove a wholesome respect for him as a mature man, but we like to think of him as one of the boys. His warm, friendly manner inspires confidence. His enthusiasm cheers us when we are discouraged. His ambition for us, and his ideals for us call forth our best. The love and influence of our counsellors will live far beyond these four short years. They hove not only helped us complete our high school education, but also have inspired us to seek higher fields of learning and have rendered invaluable assistance in obtaining scholarships for graduating seniors. Affectionately, we salute our dear friends, and, to them, we dedicate this 1953 edition of the Tower. Pago 6 MR. FRANK A. PEAKE, A.B., M.A. Olivet College, Howard College IIII I! President Vice-President There is a county rule which says that each freshman and sophomore must participate in physical education. The girls at Valley don't seem to mind this too much because of their fine instruction and equipment which helps to make a well-balanced and interesting Physical Education Program. This year found all the girls interested in sports doing a wide variety of things. As before they were guided by Miss Houlton and her assistant, Mrs. lutz. Emphasis was put on softball, basketball, ping-pong, soccer, volleyball and badminton. Tournaments were held in these sports and a championship team was crowned. Tumbling hos been worked on a great deal more this year than ever before. Also for the first time this year modern dance was taught. Mrs. Lutz was chief instigator in this sport. It was mostly the senior girls who participated with much enthusiasm. As you can tell by the picture, swimming has interested quite a few of the Valley students. The outstanding senior girl swimmers are Mary Bardwell, Marianne Coston and Sis Fruitticher. OFFICERS JAMES DORSETT. JACK KIDD . .. HENRY BEATTY ROY COSTNER . .
