To accomplish this a program had to be planned, personnel woven into a faculty, and a diverse group of individuals molded into a student body. This tremendous task rested on the shoulders of one man, selected because of his wide range of knowledge gained from a background of varied experiences. His father-a teacher, lecturer, author, and minister, and his mother, a teacher of languages, contributed to his early training for such a task 3 the understanding patience of his wife encouraged him in his profes- sional achievementsg his wide travels into universities and colleges over the nation gave him an insight into the best educational practices being observed, his connections in civic and social organizations gave him a broad scope of today's problems and aided in the organization of administrative dutiesg his teaching and administrative positions in different type schools provided the professional 'experience and executive ability necessary for such a mammouth undertaking. Today, this school plant, housing almost 1,200 students and 55 teachers, and boasting a program of studies and activities outstanding in the nation, is a tribute to the vision, the ideals, and unceasing efforts of Frank A. WR? 1' 1, 'A 4, wk - - ,. : 1. eg , 'N I f f Peake. The increasing enrollment, the broadening of the curriculum, and tre- mendous amount of public relations work to be done have added much to the complexities of his task, and yet he finds time to know individual stu- dents and counsel with them. In this short time he has Won a high place in the admiration of stu- dents, faculty, and patrons. His task is by no means complete, for the school has only begun to take shape, but the beginning has shown that Mr. Peake is an educator with the ability to in- spire those about him and imbue them with his own enthusiasm and ideals. For his accomplishments in devel- oping this magnificent plant into an educational institution, with a spirit, for his sincere earnestness of purpose, for his ideals and leadership and for his visions for our future-we proudly dedicate the 1952 Tower to our prin- cipal, FRANK A. PEAKE. Q 554' f vs. V-J! MR, RUFUS W, SHICLTON, ILS.-M,A, MRS. OUIDA IS. Character and service are entwined thus in their rail, The torch of learning, fixed on high, is stamped upon the sail. These ships have docked at many ports and gathered up their crew, But many have they let go by because they did not hear the cry of the ship's horn when it blew. Oh, sail forever on with crew and cargo, That the modern world may better know That long as ships like these sail on the waters, The cities and the towns will thrive and grow. Even though this squad is still young in experience, they added much to the zest and spirit of the football games. Rain or shine, this squad was cheering the football team to their victories. Before the Homecoming game the Cheerleaders sponsored a bonfire pep rally and snake dance through Homewood. This activity helped in making homecoming the huge success it was. This is due to our fine coach, Mr. Barrington, and his constant work to improve track in the Valley. The team has gone to Auburn for the State Meet, and to the Alabama Relay Meets for the past 3 years, showing up well each time. The hard work by the boys and the Coach has made track one of Shades Valley's finest sports. This was the first game of the season, with seven scheduled games remaining to be played. The team consists this year of twenty boys, nine of which lettered last year. With the determination and fine spirit displayed by the team this year, Shades Valley is looking forward to a very successful 1952 season in baseball. The team has played many city and county high schools, and ha entered a full team in the State High School Championship at Roebuck during each year. The members of the team this year are Robert Mann, Bob Kennedy, Elbridge Hydinger, and Ervin Gotlieb. It is very difficult to become a member of this team because of the skill and consistent practice it requires. TENNIS TEAM The 1952 tennis team has represented Shades Valley with a perfect record so far this year. In the six matches that have been played with- the Big Five City schools, it has not lost one match. The team, made up of Charleton Bargeron, Jack Allison, David Bartholomew, Jimmy Denton, Lumus Lang- ley, Harry Todd, Russell Carter, Mike Moore, and Paul Goree, is the top tennis team in the league. Each city school is played twice, and with its recent records, Shades Valley is looking toward more triumphs from this fine group. SHADES VALLEY CHAMPIONS Among our students at Shades Valley are several state, regional, and national champions in various fields of sportsrincluding water skiing, roller skating, and swimming. Pat Hill and Leah Marie Rawls hold various titles in water skiing. Among Pat's honors have been the Alabama State Women's Championship for the past two years, third place in the Dixie Women's Division, and third 'place in mixed doubles in the International Ski Tournament. Pat, who was a mem- ber of Cypress Gardens Water Ski Show for four months last spring, has sponsored several water ski shows at Guntersville in the past three years. Leah Marie holds such titles as Ontario Junior Cham- pion, New England Junior Champion, Dixie Junior Champion, and National Junior Trick Champion. At the recent Dixie .Water Ski Tournament, Leah made a perfect score for the first time in the history of the event by winning-three first places. ' In the field of roller skating, Mary Alice fPanchitaJ Beatty stars. Though Panchita has been skat- ing seriously only sixteen months, she has already become known in Alabama and Georgia for her skills. A member of eight skating clubs--one honorary for those having passed difficult tests-Pan- chita has starred and participated in several skating exhibitions, and has given non-professional instruc- tion to skaters. In addition, everyone will remember the beautiful skating she did in the recent Camargo Production. The Bardwell sisters are a swimming pair that has won many titles in their field. Ann, a Senior, holds the National Junior 100-meter breaststroke, and 150-yard individual medley records of 1951. She also is the Southeastern Senior, Southeastern Interscholastic, and Georgia AAU record-holder in the breaststroke and individual medley divisions. Mary, a Junior, holds records in the Southeastern 100- yard freestyle, Oklahoma Open AAU 50-yard freestyle, Chattanooga AAU, and Midsouth 100-meter. Though these sports are not sponsored by our Physical Education program, Shades Valley wishes to congratulate these champions on their achievements. AF Members of the Winning Intramural Volleyball Team Left to right--Julia Franklin, Jan Gillespie, Jeanette Stalcup, Effie Earnest, and Jeannelle Stalcup. GIRLS? The department of Physical Education for girls is one of the finest in the country. Under the leadership of Miss Jimmie Houlton the girls learn to master many dif- ferent sports. Dividing into teams, they participate in intramural sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball. Tournaments are held in these sports and a championship team is crowned. Individual competition is held in badminton and ping-pong. A portion of the course is devoted to achieving skill in dancing and tumbling. The need for improved physical fitness is as impor- tant for girls as for boys. Under the guidance of the Girls' Physical Education Department a health program is conducted. Everyone remembers the eye tests given to every pupil in school, T. B. tests to all who wanted one, and dental exams to every girl taking physical education. ast Game of llaskcfball Practicing Skills In T'1u11b1'i'ng S , M fi 5 A 5 Mlj7f5'5fV .
