Rain or shine, in victory or defeat, the Eagles a ays gm 'he EXTRA EFFORT VarsitySeccer T WriThing wiTh agony on The rain soaked field, senior Rich Gallagher calls ouT To TeammaTe senior David Marvin encouraging him and The resT of The Team To l'Win iT! This was jusT one ex- ample of The Team spiriT and dedica- Tion To vicTory ThaT Took The Eagles To an impressive 'll-A season. There were many reasons why The Team should noT have done well. Moving up from assisTanT coach To head coach was a big sTep for Mr. Mike Johnson, and geT- Ting used To his coaching sTyle could have been a major obsTacle for The Team. BuT, he seemed To know jusT whaT The players needed To become unified. The Thing ThaT impressed David Marvin was ThaT Coach Johnson . . TreaTed everyone equally. He really cared abouT you. He did seem To have his prioriTies sTraighT. ThroughouT The season he sTressed Teamwork. He TaughT The squad ThaT The key To scor- ing is being unselfish and passing The ball. He drilled iT inTo us aT every prac- Tice, remembered junior Danny Colpo. UniTy and Team work were un- doubTedly Two key facTors of every game plan. We were close, said Da- vid Marvin. There wasn'T so much pressure To win. We were encouraged To do our besT and play as a Team. Sophomore Mike Bellanca may have idenTified The key ingredienT in The Team's formula for success. For him, The highlighT of The season was The come-from-behind 7-4 vicTory over WesTminsTer. We were behind 3 To 4 aT The half, buT we commiTTed The game To God during The half. Such a desire To honor God in all They did was a hallmark of The Team ThroughouT The season. For Coach Johnson and many of The players The highlighT of The season was The vicTory over indian Springs. This firsT-Time success over such TalenTed compeTiTion was a definiTe high for The Team. Coach Johnson said iT besT: 'TIT was like winning a TournamenT. However, The Team also wenT Through some valleys. During These lows They cemenTed The Team uniTy and learned some valuable lessons. The firsT game againsT AlTamonT was one of Those valleys. Playing in The pouring rain was challenge enough, buT To lose a key player Qsenior Rich Gallagherj in The efforT was a sTagger- ing blow. Then, To add insulT To injury, The AlTamonT players began To laugh aT Rich when he cried ouT in pain. Coach Johnson, Trying To use The siTua- Tion To build uniTy, Told The Team, They're laughing aT The Team. Unfor- TunaTeIy, The game ended in a 2-'I vic- Tory for AlTamonT. ln ThaT defeaT, The guys learned ThaT aTTiTude has a loT do do wiTh performance. We losT againsT AlTamonT because we were geTTing revenge for Rich, relaTed goalie Mike Bellanca. A successful season is an accom- plishmenT any Time, buT To pull iT off in The face of so many changes was even a bigger achievemenT. Besides having To geT used To a new coach, The Tougher compeTiTion as a resulT of joining The Alabama High School ATh- leTic AssociaTion was a major obsTacle for The Team. The inexperience of many of The players was a sTrike againsT Them, buT as junior Danny Colpo said, 'lWe worked well TogeTher on The field. Danny crediTed The coach's pracTice of swiTching players around in differenT posiTions wiTh help- ing Them overcome Their inexperi- ence. IT helped us undersTand The im- porTance of each posiTion, ' he said. CooperaTion on The field even Took on an inTernaTional perspecTive as junior Kenji SaTo, an exchange sTudenT from Japan, led The Team in scoring C46 poinTsj. Even The language barrier was noT Too big an obsTacle for The Eagles. As is True of all successful Teams, The Eagles Turned obsTacles inTo sTepping sTones by pulling TogeTher, sTriving To puT God firsT and always giving a liTTle exTra when The chips were down. conTinued i 3, ., Tl ,T .
