Cn January 49, 4989, Mrs. Hickman was named Teacher of the Week by Channel 6. ' Mike Royer came and interviewed her along with some of her first grade students. She was presented with a certificate and featured on the 5 o'clock newscast. First grader Jeremy Oglesby nominated her because She teaches math good. She said that winning the award was a total surprise because every kid kept it a secret. Mrs. Hickman has been an elementary teacher for 20 years, '15 of those at S.M.C.S. She came to Shades Mountain in the school's first year and has taught both K-5 and first grade. She has her degree in elementary education from Samford University.
