How could my parenTs pull me ouT of a public school and Throw me here in The middle of The nine weeks? Since I missed The morning crossing guard, I had To waiT for a Teacher To escorT me across The sTreeT To The high school. I didn'T wanT The deTenTion hall The principal had warned me abouT. I walked in, and I knew someThing was different Well, The widTh of The hallway sure IefT a IoT To be desired. Already 20 minuTes IaTe for my firsT En- glish class. GreaT. My newly-married Teacher had Three names: Miss HamiITon, Mrs. KaTz, The fiLeal Differenc and Ms. Home-KaTz, buT she obviously preferred one To all The oThers. I re- member hearing her Tell a sTudenT, My name is Mrs. KaTz. If you cdn'T re- member ThaT, you'II have To siT in fronT of This, as she poinTed To a black name-plaque on her desk. A kid raised his hand and asked who The chapel speaker would be. Cha- pel - whaT's ThaT? I ThoughT. Mrs. KdTz's eyes zoomed in on a guy in The back of The room. Jason, do we have jeans on Today? Uh, no, uh was senior Jason Brough's firsT response. WhaT abouT The inseam'? she asked wiTh eyebrows raised. Well, uh, well, considering I would have had To wear jeans if I hadn'T had There's safeTy in numbers - buT even all These sTudenTs musT waiT for an adulT before crossing The sTreeT.
