A newcomer this year, freshman Stewart Ash- worth gets caught by the camera while waiting to cross the street. 'QW A. Z V7 c Freshrnan Heather Angel and Alison Schilling ex- change a hug after earning a place on the 1988-4989 Junior Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Seventh-graders Stephanie Marvin, Joy Nicker- son, and Celeste Hardy take time out from school to have a friendly chat.

41' here 'Difference Yes! Yes! School was ouT and sum- mer was here To sTay qfor Three monfhs, aT IeasTj. I've been kind of sad, Though. I was walking ouT To my car wiTh a whole group of friends ThaT I had never meT before I came To S.M.C.S. - ThaT was when I realized how special This school was To me. And I don'T mean jusT The soccer games, baskeTball games, LiberTy Club Trips, parTies, and Iunchroom conversa- Tions. This school was differenT - really differenf - from any oTher place I've ever known. Going To Burger King was wierd. I couldn'T even eaT for all The oTher sTu- denTs dragging me around while They were wiTnessing. I guess ThaT was when Miss Culver does her besT To help freshmen Vince Williams and Joey BarTgis wiTh a few Spanish problems. The varsiTy cheerleaders dazzle The high school wiTh a pep-rally cheer, 'IS ! I sTarTed To Think abouT God, insTead of jusT myself. The day I prayed wiTh one of Them To receive Jesus as my Savior was The besT day of my life! The Teachers here cared abouT ME as a person, noT jusT as The kid who saT in The back corner of every class. And when we had a parTy or field Trip, They parTied righT along wiTh us. And my friends - They were greaT! This school was jusT plain FRIENDLY! Okay, so I didn'T speak To every single person in The hall and I didn'T know everyone's name. BuT There was sTiIl somefhing special abouT seeing some- body from S.!vl.C.S. in The mall and waving aT him. Snobs here were a defi- HITS rT1il'1OTiTy! conTinued gg G Ss X . V, . S x S 5' 1 si Z? The Eagles' varsiTy soccer Team prepares To soar wiTh a pre-game sTreTch. Dr. Sharon Berry, direcTor of S.M.C.S., comes To The gym To wafch her sTudenTs. Dr. Berry showed us ThaT The Teachers were noT The only ones who cared: she did, Too. oi, And all homework and closswork aside, school was fun. WheTher iT was laughing wiTh a friend aT The lockers or wafching Two friends like seniors Henry AusTin and ClayTon Alves or juniors Jon .lobes and Brad Willis cuT-up in The hall, life was seldom dull. This school was definlTely differenT. IT had a special aTmosphere, an aTTi- Tude. And iT had Jesus ChrisT, The mosT imporTanT difference of all.
