With two players on academic probation, they also began the season wondering what would happen with their team. Freshman forward Vince Williams had this to soy about the team. We were the type of team that would be up one week and down the next. We were very inconsistent in our play. Freshman guard John Phillips added, We were very young and inexperienced but persistent and hard-working. The persistence and hard work really paid off in the end too. ln their final game, they were playing for the tournament championship. This was one of the most exciting games of the season. Kingwood was up by three points, but SMCS had the ball. With only a few seconds left, sev- enth grade guard Roy Weaver took a three pointer. He banged it in and was fouled in the process. The game went into overtime, and SMCS eventually won the game and the Championship. Q Freshman Josh DelVecchio was named MVP and was also the top offensive play- er on the team. Daniel Marvin was also named to the all-tournament team. Chris Daniel K. ,gy X , ..,,.. Hard practice and determination lead to A WINNING SEA 50N Practicing free throws, doing layups and running laps - These were all a part of the girl's basketball practice, but all of this hard work evidently paid off when you take a look at the Lady Eagle's season. The girls had one of their best seasons ever and this is due to their hard work, the discipline of Coach Duvel, and the fact that they wanted to win. For example, during the last two quarters of a game against Webb, the score was almost even and the girls finally pulled through and won in the last few seconds. And, in a particularly tough Cand longj game against the Tuscaloosa Warriors,. the girls went into overtime four times. But, thanks to some great long shots by juniors Erika Clark and Denise Lamar, and a terrific block by sophomore Tammy Gable, the lady Eagles finally came out on top, winning by two points. Although there were some really tough games, and although they lost two of their players halfway through the season, the girls proved that they were fighters and that they could en- dure.
