Through thick and thin, the Eagles basketball teams always GAVE IT TH IR ALL Determination, skill, enthusiasm - all of these ajectives could describe the 88-89 SMCS Eagle team. Both the var- sity and JV teams l'Gave it their all in every game, said Coach Johnson at the Sports Banquet. At the beginning of the year, the members of the varsity team were very unsure of themselves. There were only two returning starters from the previous year, and five of the eleven players were sophomores. However, it was very evident from the opening contest that this varsity team was not going to be easily overturned. They won their first four games and then faced their hardest opponents of the season. They gave it their all against Jefferson Christian and Central Park but came up short in two hard-fought games. The varsity game against Webb was probably the oddest game all year for the Eagles. With one second left, SMCS was up 63-62. Webb had the ball and sf Q 30 rl EA L saw X Sophomore forward Lance Williams was a big contributor to the team as the Sixth Man. a chance fora desperation shot. They called a time-out, but they received a technical foul because they were out of time-outs. Therefore, Webb simply walked off the court. The Eagles won that tough game 64-62. In the BCSl tournament, the Eagles had to play Jefferson Christian for the third time of the season. In front of a packed house in the SMCS gym, the Eagles fought a good fight and got within six points of JCA, yet they still fell short. They ended up second in tour- nament play. Several awards were given out for outstanding efforts during the season. The top offensive player of the year was John Headley: while Mike Bellanca was voted Best Defensive Player. The overall MVP was senior forward David Marvin. The 'lCoach's Award was awarded to Travis Walton be- cause of his outstanding attitude over the course of the season. Qcontinuedy , .sas K ., M 2 ,.
