I-Ie led our varsity soccer team to their first AACS national championship this year. We all admire Coach Dean for his consistent Christian testimony, diligence, determi- nation, and sportsmanship. He is an inspiration not only to the athletic department, but to the entire student body. We thank him for his faithfulness to our athletic program. ww ' ' . A-Q: 11' ies 1 A N W1-1511 ,- ,Q if QE? VIGNEULLE AST R It seems impossible that eleven years have passed in the ministry of Shades Mountain Chris- tian Schools. 1985 marks a milestone in the history of SMCS - our first graduating class. I am proud of SMCS and praise the Lord for what He has done in the lives of students, teachers, and families. My prayer is that we will continue to seek to please Him and encourage each other in all that we endeavor. Dick Vigneulle .J-10 i 2 S.M.C.S. HAPPIC HAQFPK PEOPLE mtl -MPX As we began the year under a administration, we did not to expect from our new Mr. Ray Berry, or tour new Director, Dr. Sharon Ber- gry. But God does all things well! llvlr. Berry put us all at ease saying lhe wanted the students to be Hap- py, Happy, Happy. Dr. Berry's lopenness made it clear that we had la friend in the office. f It has been said that any organif Qation rises and falls upon its lead- Qership. If this is true, then the fu- lture of SMCS is truly bright. i-...mm The teachers at S.M.C.S. really had the students' minds working this year, but that doesn't mean the teachers didn't work. Planning all those exciting classes for the studentsp going to all those meet- ings after working all dayp having to grade all those tests they gaveg plus, the Ir.fSr. high teachers handing out deten- tions and checking for correct dress code. You could see Christ in each of the teach- er's lives. They have been a good exam- ple to the students this past year. It was a tough year for everyone, but we finally made it. After two long years of hard work and determina- tion, the Eagles edged defending champi- ons Chisago Lakes Baptist School, Chi- sago City, Minnesota 2 to 1 to win the 1984 AACS National Soccer Tournament at the Wilds in North Carolina. The game was a rematch of last years cham- pionship game when the same teams squared off, with the Minnesota team capturing the title by a 3 to O margin. Our very own Peter Loli was selected MVP for the tournament, and it was the third straight year for this fine athlete to be named to the AACS all-tournament team. Joining Peter on the all-tourna- ment team were Sonny Blaising, Paul Bradley, and Fulton Ramsay. The Chi- sago Lakes team won the Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year. Today we had the first reunion of the 985 graduating class of Shades Mountain Christian Schools. The reunion was held in the picnic pavillion of Tannehill State Park which had been totally renovated and was a ieautiful place for this special occasion. One of the first persons I spoke with in connection with the reunion was the former Miss Karla Roozen. She told me she vould have no trouble coming as she could leave her children with her mother. She plans all the campaign parties for her iusband so I knew she would be more than willing to help plan this party. She delighted each one of us with a lifetime upply of lip gloss from her own factory. While enroute from her home in Washington D.C. she picked up Cheryl Dean. in slew York. Yes, it's still Miss Dean, new sole owner of the Ziploc Storage Bag Company. She invented the first airtight bag hat is absolutely rip-proof. She also made headlines as the first woman on the moon without a spaceship. I also enlisted the help of Karen Boozer in designing the invitations. Karen stayed on at Iack's and is now quite rich from lesigning menu covers for their company. Scott Robinson is also quite well off. He is the happy President of the Skoal Company. He has helped the company liversify into flavored chew. He gave each of us a sample pack of watermelon, bubblegum, and tutti-frutti falvored chew. Several celebrities were present in our not-so-humble midst today including Jenny Miller who besides having her own arivate practice also runs a private women's hospital. She also serves as chairperson of N.O.W.D., The National Organiza- ion of Women Doctors. Amy Tucker made headlines as she stopped by to chat for a few minutes. She travels all over the vorld as Richard Nixon's son's personal secretary. She plans to move up the political ladder, and perhaps her marriage to a rlawaiian eleven years her senior will help her. A Yes, Dear Diary, straight from Hollywood came the celebrated television star millions of children love . . . Mr. Radue Dur former classmate Chris secretly killed Mr. Rogers so he could take his place as Mr. Radue and brainwash millions of rhildren and thereby take over the world. Many could not be with us today for various reasons. Suzanne Lemond, known to millions as Suzi Patti is now married to 5andi's brother. She is enjoying success and goes on tours with them. Our other songbird Amy Palmer is now a country ,tar and goes on tour with Willie Nelson. She owns her own recording studio and has produced six gold albums. I Scott Hughes enjoys working part-time as a cartoon character voice and spends his summers scoping Florida beaches as a beauty contest judge. We were quite shocked to learn that Peter Loli had been caught by the immigration patrol and sent back to Peru with his llama. More shocking was the fact that our old friends Tappie and Earl were in prison. Earl had been leading a normal life as a farmer in Russia. His greed took over and he tried to rob a store with a toy gun, but was caught. Tappie has three more years io serve for libel and slander. I-Ier love for gossip went a little too far in her Birmingham News column. ' Paul Bradley was unable to be with us for a more serious reason. I learned that Paul married soon fthe night after graduationl. He became the most successful coach at Auburn University. After an early retirement, he, his wife, and seventeen kids moved to Montana. While deer hunting he was shot on accident by Debi Gulledge. jamie could not be with us either. I learned that he had had a brilliant career as an airforce general and part-time crop luster. After the plane crash it was all over. His brain was permanently damaged. His wife, two sons, and daughter visit rim frequently at Brice. ' jeff Frazier provided the entertainment for us. He and his all black Reggae band stopped here in Birmingham long enough for the reunion. He really put his talent to good use on those keyboards. It was a nice surprise when Fulton Ramsay walked in. No one had heard from him and I had been unable to reach him by :hone or letter. I-Ie is still single and is adamant about remaining that way. He lives a true frontier life in the mountains of Nlorth Carolina. I-Ie owns a small hunting shop and grows all his own food. Rod surprised us by driving up in a taxi cab with his name printed on the side. He is satisfied with owning his own :ompany because now he gets paid for sitting on the job which he could never do at Western. Brian Anderton owns the largest used car lot in the Southeast. He has not married yet, but many girls are eager for the Jpportunity to present itself. While awaiting the arrival of a few stragglers, in walked Lisa Summerlin, the now famous dress and sportswear designer For all the hottest videos and movies. Well, I must go now, but today and all the days in preparation for the reunion were wonderful. I enjoyed getting in touch Nith everyone. We decided to make this an annual party and to give some thought to inviting Mr. next time. Written by: junior class Edited and compiled by: Jenny Miller utr? A -M , . 3 -, I W 1 In , . 'Z g A ' . . Homecoming Court B ' r We Flappers, hoboes, Fonzies, space cadets . . . This week of Homecom- ing 1985 saw SMCS invaded by a horde of strange beings from the past and crazy future. After a week of rolling over each other, stuffing their faces with gross concoctionsg and generally sacrificing their dig- nity in the name of class pride, the Eagles were ready for the calming effect of a victory in their first homecoming game. The intended victim: Triana Village. Alas, the 44- 42 loss was anything but soothing. Ah, but nothing soothes the bog- gled mind like a beautiful lady, and the 1985 Homecoming Court was just the medicine the Eagles need- ed. I just can't believe this! Amy Tucker cried, as she was crowned as SMCS's first Homecoming Queen. River of nightmares Tom Sawyer lives again after 150 years On November 30 1984 Mark Twam s 150th birthday the seventh ninth grade students presented their version of Mr Twam s classic tale Tom Sawyer. The play was a success despite such problems as the curtain refusing to open and close properly and Amy Tucker having to hold up the props during the play. It was clear that the actors were psychecl more llke 1tl Got in the jam agalnl up for the play as they lay on the floor backstage to relax The director s enthusiasm was also evident When Mrs Tucker asked her co director Mr Moore You sure you want to do this? his reply was Lets do it and get it over.
