The Homecoming program with a parade and dance was one of the First jobs undertaken. A Fire-rally and a dance before the Eastern game were also under the Councills supervision. An outstanding accomplishment of the group was the European Relief Drive through which our school contributed to the support of FIVE schools in Finland. The Council also had charge of registering all vehicles which are driven to school. It sponsored many fine assembly programs of interest from both the educational and recrea- tional angle. Student Council ollicers attended the 5-A conference. 5 OFFICERS Miss Lawry, Adviserg Gerald Schmidtke, Vice-Presidentg Herb Whitecraft, Presidentg Joyce McLravy, Secretary, Mr. Burnham, Adviser E31 STUDENT COUNCIL SECOND SEMESTER Top Row: Starkweather, Raymond, J. Raymond, Hatt, Athey, Kinsey, Fitch, Reynolds, Hines, Farhat 3rd Row: Baker, Shase, Holland, Wieland, McLravy, Renwick, Brubaker, Herre, Vlahakis 2nd Row: French, McCulloch, VanBuren, DeFord, Haan, B. Bates, Brake, T. Bates, Wilkins, Miss Lawry Ist Row: Lind, Heimonen, Sailor, Johnson, Whitney, Gray, Louckes, Wiley, Carlton In the second semester, the Student Council again worked hard for the betterment of the school. The problem of noon recreation for both boys and girls was one of the things the group took under consideration. For future elections of council oilicers, the Council secured permission from the city to use the regular voting machines. The Council voted generous financial support to this year's Oracle. During this semester the Council secured various groups for assembly programs, chartered busses for out-of-town games, took charge of pep assemblies and worked on assembly programs for next fall. Again Student Council officers attended the 5-A conference. Sexton High School students are proud of the achievements of their Student Council. These two groups were combined to form one club in February, 1948. This local club is one of the branches of the State Retailing and Oflice Club of Michigan. All members of the Cooperative Retailing and Business Training classes are eligible for mem- bership. Cooperative Retailing and Business Training is a planned cooperative effort between the employer and the school to give supervised work- experience to boys and girls in retail stores and business oilices before graduation from high scho-ol. Each student is given school credit for his on-the-job training as well as his class-work. Two periods of in-school instruction are required of all cooperative students for the purpose of providing background and related instruction to better understand their business and their job activities. An outstanding concert was given March 4, in which all the different divisions of the department participated, showing the year's accomplishments. The marching band put on a number of fine demonstrations during the football season. The members spent many hours out of school perfecting their marching technique and the quality of their performance. The pep band did a lot toward boosting school spirit during the basketball games and at the pep assemblies. Last fall the band traveled to Battle Creek to play for the Percy Jones gameg to Jackson for the Sexton-jackson game, and in the spring, to Holland to play in the Tulip Festival. They also marched in the Army Day and Armistice Day parades. Orchestra membership this year was larger than it has ever been before. The orchestra worked hard to furnish the music for ther operetta, for both of the Senior B plays, and for the January and June Baccalaureates and Commencements. They gave a very fine performance during the Spring Concert and at the spring P.T.A. meeting. The orchestra also traveled to Holland for the Tulip Festival and to Battle Creek for a concert at the Percy Jones Hospital. A This last year has been an especially busy one for Sexton's Choir. They filled a great number of outside engagements besides responding to requests to sing at regular school activities. They sang a beautiful program at the annual Spring Concert in March and also at the Spring Choral Con- cert in May. They gave performances at Bellevue High School, Boys' Vocational School, and for the Army Day Banquet in the Olds Auditorium. They also sang at the january Baccalaureate services. 'ftii Q The combined Girls' Glee Clubs have been much in demand this year. They have filled requests for many out-of-school events such as singing for the Business and Professional Women's Club, and helping with the Olds Tower Christmas Carol Broadcasts. In school events they gave a fine per- formance both semesters for our P.T.A. programs and brought much credit to themselves and their director at the Spring Choral Concert in May. The Girls' Sextette has filled a long list of public appearances this year, covering numbers pre- sented before lodges and business clubs, at services in various churches, for educational conventions, and before the State Federation of Music Clubs at the Hotel Olds in April. They also took part in the Vocal Concert on May 12. The String Trio has frequently been called upon to play at banquets as well as for other out-of- school activities. Members have had to spend considerable time outside of their regular classes to fulfill these requests. They played at several of the teachers' teas, at Child Study Club meeting, at the January senior banquet, and for the Matinee Musical. The Harpists also have had an especially busy year. They too have played at many banquets and conventions, among them the Sportsmen's Convention, the Benefit Style Show that was spon- sored by Reo, and the Y.M.C.A. Banquet. All of the harpists worked diligently preparing for the spring State Convention of Harpists that was held in Detroit. The Trumpet Trio has appeared before the Kiwanis Club and has played several times at Percy Jones Hospital. The trio helped with school assemblies and took part in both the Spring Concert and the City Music Festival. 'V TRUMPET TRIO Ray Jupin Bill Gray Maurice Pelton 51043 Music CQNCERT BAND , , Flutes-S. Under his direc- tion, the squad which represented Sexton High School discussed the topic-Resolved: That the Federal Government should require arbitration of labor disputes in all basic American industries. The affirmative side of this question was supported by Dick Robinson and Gaylord Sheets, and the negative was upheld by john Leonard and Fred Burke. Besides the judged debates, the speakers competed in seventy-Eve practice debates. These added discussions gave them much valuable experience which was to their advantage later in the season. The squad argued this topic on both the aiiirmative and negative sides with the following high schools: Grand Rapids Central, Hamtramck, Battle Creek, Jackson, Eastern, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids Union, and Muskegon Heights. Sexton won 75 per cent of all judged debates and placed third in the 5-A league. Winning this percentage of contests qualified the team to enter the State Tournaments where they won a unani- mous decision over Sandusky, but were defeated by Hazel Park by a split decision. The 1947-48 debate season was a satisfying one from the debaters' point of view, for the ques- tion under study gave them an excellent opportunity to seek an answer to a serious problem which has long disturbed our national, social, and economic equalibrium. Throughout the year, debaters have talked to various service clubs on a variety of subjects per- taining to world aff-airs. ' Under Mr. Maunder's supervision, the debate team is looking forward to an eventful and hard- Working season when school convenes inthe fall. Included in the forensic contests are extem- poraneous speaking, original oration, dramatic speaking, and oratorical declamation. Winners who place in the 5-A league go on to the regional and state elimination series. In orations upon the topic I Speak for Democracy, Gaylord Sheets and John Leonard placed first and third, respectively, in the city. Gaylord went on to capture the state finals. His oration on this subject was considered one of the eight best in the national iinals. Once again this year Sexton placed a person in the honorary position as the city's mayor. The speech on Americanism by Gaylord Sheets was considered the best by a group of prominent city officials. This group tied for iirst place in the tournament for 5-A league squads at Battle Creek. Polly Muilenburg placed first in the dramatic speaking and Karl Kessler captured second place in the oratorical declamation division. Once again this year this group has had both city and state recognition for its excellent work. During the past year, the coaches have been responsible for the clean, hard-Fighting bunch of boys which have given Sexton much glory. All have taught sportsmanship plus the finer points of different games which they know so well. The Big Reds have always been noted for having fight, drive, and stamina. This year's teams have been no exception. Through the untiring efforts of the coaches the squads have prospered. Each one has spent much extra time with the players showing them how to improve. This has changed the boys. from just good players to excep- tional ones whose merits are well known. To the coaches of our school we pay tribute for their job in building better teams for Sexton. The job was to build a strong team around a few capable lettermen. With the help of the other coaches, Mr. Nickel, Mr. Kowalk, and Mr. Balmer, the Big Reds quickly were whipped into condition. In the first game with Midland, conditioning plus timing in plays showed up to marked advantage. Through- out the game, the line play was consistent on defense and the backl-ield showed some brilliant break away run- ning. Midland was outplayed by the score of 33-12. The Saginaw tussle was by no means a run-away. Although Sexton outplayed their strong foes by statistics, they barely eked out a win by the close score of 7-6. Flint Central proved to be the stumbling block for the Chiefs At their hands we suffered our first defeat. Otstanding was the line, holding Central to fewer yards than the Big Reds could total by rushing. Passing was the only factor which showed any scoring punch for the Indians from Flint. Sexton twice penetrated far into enemy territory but both times costly fumbles broke the sustained drives. Flint completed two passes to win a hard fought game 14-0. The fans at Sexton's second home game saw a spirited group of boys play good, hard, clean football against Ann Arbor. They also were happy that the Big Reds could bring home the victory by the overwhelming score of 26-O. Pontiac presented a squad which had a come back in the last half. Sexton was leading until the last few minutes of play when Pontiac completed a long desperation pass. The extra point was made, and the Chiefs lost by the narrow margin of 14-13. Vying for the 5-A league title was Battle Creek on October 25. Long runs were the rule rather than the excep- tion. Blocking was keen, and bone crushing tactics were much in evidence. When the final whistle had blown, Sexton had won the scoring spree 34-25. The game with Jackson always has shown intense rivalry. The Big Redsn were on top at the end of this heated battle 20-7. Macklin field was the scene of the traditional Eastern-Sexton tangle of football strategy. Snow, mud, and the Quakers stopped the Big Reds high geared ground attack. Eastern scored once and won by the margin of seven points. Sexton was tied with Battle Creek for the 5-A league championship. The trophy which was won three times by the Chiefs is now retired to our trophy cabinet. After the season, the following boys were awarded honor positions: Jim johnson and Roger Bates both made first string berths for the state and 5-A league teams, John Jones, Pooch Goldner, Dick Harp, Dick Carrus, Jon Hodgin, jim Osborn, George Harlow, and Charles Stanton all were mentioned on the 5-A league honor team. Through the untiring work of Mr. Campbell, and the pep and vigor of his assistants, the 1947 football season was distinctly a success. f118j zdthletics JUNIOR LITTLE REDS Top Row: Cosper, McFadden, Decker, Miller, Brown, Irish, Lott, Hogan, Davis, Shaft lst Row: Snyder, Franks, Hanel, Thornton, Whitney, Hill, Blackwell, Pulver, Koessel Sept. ' The Chiefs started off poorly losing three straight games to Jackson, Holland, and Dearborn. After two weeks of hard work during Christmas vacation, Coach Nickel on December 30 pre- sented a rejuvinated squad in spirit and ball handling, one which clearly displayed a strong defensive combination and a reliable offense. Playing a driving style of ball, Sexton downed the Alumni team by a considerable margin. Finding the taste of victory sweet. the Big Reds fol- lowed up their initial victory with many more impressive battles. Included in their downed foes were Eastern, Pontiac, Battle Creek, Ann Arbor, and Holland. Many of the games which were lost were decided in the last few minutes of play. jackson was the big obstacle in Sexton's bid for the 5-A title. Even though losing two games to ackson, the Chiefs tied for second lace with Eastern in lea ue com etition. P g P Sexton went to the finals in the regional tournaments. The game with Monroe was never in doubt after the first few moments of play. The iinal score was 41-32 in favor of Sexton. In the second game, Mr. Nickel's boys ran rough shod over Ann Arbor. Team play was in evidence all through the evening, and when the linal gun went off, Sexton won by the overwhelming score of 53-36. On March 13, the final game was played at Jackson, as were the other two. Sexton gained an early lead and held onto it until the last of the third quarter. Although the squad still played steady and impressive basketball during the last quarter, the sharpshooters from Jackson were victorious by the margin of eight points. The final score was 37-29. The Big Red cagers had many outstanding performers of which the school may justly be proud. Don Little made the first string of the 5-A team and was given honorable mention for the various state teams. Duke Schuon rated a second place berth on the 5-A team and Herb Whitecraft and Pooch Goldner made honorable mention on the same squad. The prospects for next year's team look good. Many lettermen will be returning, and with Mr. Nickel doing as capable a job next year as he did this year, it is a sure bet that Sexton will be a strong squad throughout the season. Wrestling made its debut as a 5-A League sport this year and found the Big Reds the proud possessors of the league crown. The grapplers went through nine dual matches undefeated and ended up as City Champions, 5-A League Champions, and also brought home the first State Wrestling Title. In the State Tournament the Big Reds brought home five individual champions. They were: Arnold Kosloski at 103 lbs.g Floyd Eaton at 127 lbs.g Carl Covert at 133 lbs.g Leo Smedley at 165 lbs.g Joe Planck at 175 lbs. Second place awards went to: Austin McLean at 120 lbs.g Jim Davis at 112 lbs.g and Dick Buckmaster at heavyweight. Bill Gray and Al May won third and fourth places, respectively. Arnold Kosloski led the team in scoring by pinning 8 of his 9 opponents, but was followed closely by the ever smiling, ever laughing Floyd Eaton. Next year's team will be without the services of McLean, Planck, and Buckmaster. Their presence will be greatly missed, for they sparkpluged the squad weekly. The season was very successful and put another must on the sports followers' agenda for next winter. TIZGI if Rm' Q a wifi Qnwafmavq ,jjgfwpynm Z? Q OL., I 13,153-VLQLXI -ftbxym 1385314 f A-wvsfxi. Under Coach Shaft's direction, we won 60 per cent of our games, giving us a .600 team valuation. The pitching was done by Lefty Grove, now playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Grove Won 4 and lost 3 of his 7 games, giving him a .571 average. Ron Moore pitched 3 games, winning 2 of them. The jackson game fscore 4-3D was won in the last inning by a long double, driven out by Bates. On May 13, Sexton scored 26 points against Technical. Everybody hit at least once, and there were 17 hits in all. The remainder of the 26 points were made up by Technical errors. We Won the next game on May 16 with Battle Creek. The score was 4-2. Up until the last inning, the score had been tied. Then Sherry batted in two runs. The batting average is as follows: Little .458, Johnson .315, Willson .333, and Mills .333. The Big Reds won all but one meet in which they were entered and were second only to jackson in the 5-A meet. This was one of the best Cross Country seasons in Sexton's history. The Big Reds will miss Quinton Hawley, Bob Johnson and Bob Hostetler who were the most consistent point gainers, but there are a number of promising contenders for their spots in 1948. TRACK Under the able coaching of Howard Gleason and Harold Balmer, Sexton's 1947 track team showed outstanding strength in the sprints and Held events. They won two of their five meets against tough competition. Gene Frazier, a sophomore, was the season's high point gainer. Linton Stewart was undefeated in the 440 yard dash throughout the season including the 5-A and placed high in the State. Max Eggleston in the pole-vault and Chuck Stanton in the highjump consistently gained points for the Big Reds in the field events. Prospects for a successful season in '48 are good since many lettermen are returning. It is hoped that improved training facilities will soon be available. Such improvements would help greatly not only in the morale of the team but also in the calibre of its performance as well.
