They opened the season with a smashing victory over Lansing Technical High School. St. Mary's, however, was a jinx for the Chiefs who were twice defeated by them. The only other blemish on their record was a 2-to-l defeat at the hands of Ann Arbor, after Ray Alberts and Bud Mills, two key players, had gone into the service. Three hard-earned victories over Battle Creek, Iackson, and Eastern brought our team a co-championship ot the 5-A league. Players who performed brilliantly throughout the season were: Stan Goldner, Bobby Dilday, and Eugene Cornelius. The following week the Chiefs were nosed out by Eastern and lackson in a triangular meet. After this they were weakened by the loss of several key men due to ineligibility and iniuries, and were therefore outclassed in the rest of their meets. Bob Grant turned in many outstanding performances in the shotput and Claude Puffer improved throughout the season in the high jump and broad jump. Bill Olsen held down the pole vault beautifully, and Max Eggleston, a sophomore, gave previews of greater performances to come. Zip Spencer, a senior, turned in many fine performances in the mile, while Charles Rahl did well in the sprints, and Captain Paul Gikas was outstanding in the distance runs. Dick Perle provided the highlight of the day as he came from behind to whip Kellogg in three thrill-packed sets which was his order ct the day throughout the season. This or ener gave much experience to the six new members of the tennis team. . They went on with consecutive victories over Eastern, East Lansing, Char- lotte, and Ann Arbor. Alter two reversals by Charlotte and Battle Creek, they came back to defeat East Lansing and laclason so clinched second place in the 5-A league. Growing up close to a lake provided the background for varied sports and gave her the oppor- tunity to develop a skill and a liking for athletics which gave her the incentive to make this work her career. This early training has proven to be a great asset to her. We are glad to welcome Mrs. Fennell, a new faculty member in the girl gym department, who joined us in September l945. Before coming to Lansing she was a resident of Butte, Montana. Mrs. Fennell attended Columbia Univer- sity in New York, preceding her seven years' teaching experience at Michigan State College. We would like to thank you, Miss Loyer and Mrs. Fennell, for your splendid sportsmanship and constant interest in our welfare. Through your generous aid and patient kindness you have helped us achieve the aim of the gym class, to develop co-ordination, poise, body strength, co-operation, leadership, responsibility, and an interest in recreation. Above are two photos taken during a gym class showing calisthentics and dancing. Each day five minutes of every class hour is spent doing exercises and formation marching to keep in condition. Dancing is taught one hour a week to develop gracefulness and rhythmic timing.
