.flip g 0 A This winter the Drama Club opened up their year with the production of The Hobbit by J. R. Tolkein. The fun for the drama club began in October with blocking rehearsals and script reading. From there they advanced to run-throughs and memorization of parts and places. Then came the last week and with dress rehearsals. Finally opening night arrived. Mr. Capra, the director, is giving a helping hand with last minute jobs and instructions to his crew. The five minute signal is given and the actors quietly file backstage from the dressing rooms. The assistant director, Paul Downs, is overseeing last minute details while David Endresen, the stage manager, is handing out props. Suddenly the stage area is quiet. Utter silence backstage. The music swells, the sitar music starts and Rick lVlcKay, the effects man, gives the signal. The play is on! It opens with Bilbo Baggins, Ulm llillj, the Hobbit sitting outside his home enjoying his three breakfasts. Then Gandalf, tDan Campbellj, steps out on the apron and proceeds to turn Hobbit Town upside-down by mentioning adventure, a forbidden word. Ilobbits, tTara Jones, Brenda Stephens, and Julia Endresenj, look out from the curtain then return to their homes to lock their doors and bolt their windows. Bilbo enters his house, Gandalf enters, and the curtains are opened by Tammy Daken. Now the Dwarves arrive. They are the cause of this adventure. They are determined to regain their lost treasure. Dwalin, fCathy Fishy, arrives first. Soon after comes Balin, fDori Bardarsonj, the oldest of the dwarves. Then comes Nori, Olike Rulej, followed by Fili, QDebbie Gutierrezj, and Kili, fliiz Gutierrezj, the dwarf twins, with Bombur, fSharon Andersonj, Bifur, QDiann Diekinsonj, Bofur, fSandy Meilauleyj, and Thorin, fCherrie Siresj, falling last through the door. From here the play leads to Fili and Kili losing the supplies and ponies. Bilbo is sent to the Trolls, fRosie Baeklund, Meggin Dunham, and Debbie rlllltlfllj, for food. The trolls are turned to stone and Gandalf presents Bilbo and Thorin with two ancient elfish blades which the trolls had stolen. In the next scene the dwarves and Bilbo are in the goblin cave fighting for their lives. The goblins retreat at the sight of Thorinis blade. The dwarves retreat and leave Bilbo who is unconscious, overlooking him in the excitement. Bilbo meets Gollum, the slimy creature from the deep, and aquires his magic ring. Ile is reunited with his friends and Gandalf leaves the group after leaving careful instructions. The next act opens in Mirkwood forest where the dwarves and Bilbo are captured by wood elves while trying to get supplies. The people of Mirkwood trust no one. The dwarves are placed in the Queen's dungeon only to escape by hiding in the wine barrels. Next we find them at the secret entrance to the treasure. Bilbo is about to enter when the Elven Queen comes along for her share of the treasure. A further complication is that she has the only blade by which Smaug, the dragon who has stolen the treasure, can be slain. Gandalfreturns in lilne to patch up differences and Bilbo and Thorin leave to slay Smaug. Bilbo gets Smaug to expose his bare patch and Thorin strikes the fatal blow. Their goal is accomplished. The treasure is diyided between those who rightfully deserve it and all return home to live happily ever after. So ends the Drama 72-73's performance, and many thanks to Mr. Gapra for a job well done. The Hobbit
