Loew Attorney Mr. Russell F. Thomas Jr. The education of every child in America should be everybody's business. The evolutionary processes contained in education are not something reserved solely for the educators, but a trust that must be shared by Americans in all walks of life. As High School Graduates, you too will be asked to share this serious re- sponsibility. The new and spacious schools of the Central District are the result of much preparation and planning on the part of school administrators, and, of much sacrifice on the part of the taxpayers of our community. We know that you are grateful to your parents and neighbors who have so unstintingly ex- pressed their trust in our public school system by authorizing construction of our beautiful high schools. As you approach adulthood, however, you will soon realize that in order for America to have the most excellently trained minds in the world, it will be necessary to continually appraise and evaluate the educational system in your community. lt would be the height of folly to assume that any school, regard- less of its academic reputation, is performing perfectly and without problems. Therefore, it will be your solemn duty to take an active interest in all school mat- ters so that you may be better qualified to evaluate and to offer constructive criticism, when necessary. By supporting your public school system, you will be performing one of the highest functions of citizenship, and by honest and un- biased evaluation of your schools, you are assuring a system of education which truly reflects the integrity of this nation. Daniel Webster wrote, lf we work upon marble, it will perish, if we work upon brass, time will eflace it, if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust, but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbuse them with principles, with the iust fear of God, and love of our fellow man, we engrave on these tablets some- thing which will brighten to all eternity. Congratulations to each of you and may God bless you. Viola S. Southern President, Board of Education Central High School District No. 2 MF- 50f U9l Nddler Mr. Clyde M. Place Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds 6 Dr. Ursula M. Stewart School Psychiatrist Mrs. Ruth Ackley ' 1 For the first time in the history of the district there are five grad- uating senior classes and there are five yearbooks. The Totem is the senior member of this team of five annuals in the district and serves as the example for others to follow. The Totem has received marked distinction over the years. lt has recorded admirably the story of educational growth in the Sewanhaka district at the secondary level. Recognition of the Totem as one of the nation's outstanding yearbooks is another way of recognizing Sewanhaka as one of the country's best high schools. Achievement doesn't come about by accident. lt is due first to the keen interest and desire of the people of the community to have a fine school system for their youth. This interest and this desire are reflected in the actions of the school board over the years in providing excellent physical facilities and leadership to develop the educational program and select the teaching staff. Achievement is due second to the educational philosophy and ad- ministrative leadership provided by Dr. A. T. Stanforth and Mr. Harold W. Wright. They have succeeded in developing an outstanding com- prehensive program and selecting an able staff of teachers to carry out this program. Third, success of a school is a reflection of fine teachers and good teaching. Fourth, success is a reflection of student effort and activities. The Totem beautfully exemplifies the effort of many students and teachers and is representative of many successful student activities. Hence, your responsibility to maintain traditions, standards and to provide leadership is great. To blend the philosophies of terminal education and college preparation into a compatible comprehensive pro- gram to meet the needs and interests of the community in critically chang- ing times is your challenge at Sewanhaka in the years ahead.
