Mr. Walter Carringer, tenor soloist fOur Favoritel is now a resident oi New York City. As a boy soprano, he began the serious study of piano. He received music degrees at Columbia University. After exacting auditions he was selected as the tenor soloist with the famed Robert Shaw Chorale and has appeared throughout the United States with this organization. He has had many gp. pearances in Town Hall, Carnegie Hall, Hunter College, Philadelphia, and Boston, and has ap. peared in many productions conducted by Toscanini. Miss Patricia Pierce, pianist, Louisville, Kentucky, received her Bachelor of Music Degree from Uni- versity of Texas with piano under Dalies Franz and Webster Aitkin and her Master of Music from the'University of Michigan, with special repertoire coaching under Leonard Shure and Robert Goldsand. Concert tours have covered a wide territory in Kentucky: Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, and Okla- homa. Orchestra appearances include Michigan Symphony, National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan, and Louisville Philharmonic. YOUNG ARTISTS' CONCERTS Pictured here are the three Young Artists who presented concerts in our school during the year of '55 and '56, These appearances were arranged by Mrs. Pack, who is always interested in bringing us cultural programs. Miss Charlotte Miller, dramatic soprano, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been an adopted daughter of the South for many years and now resides at Long Beach, Mississippi. The proximity of Chicago provided early training in piano and voice with serious purpose. Miss Miller had a period of study with Marjorie Lawrence in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and was presented in many concert engagements in that city. This artist commutes regularly for choir assignments in New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities. She has appeared with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra and is heard annually in roles with the New Orleans Opera House Association. 1 COURTEOUS cmd Barbara 'king , K X i J fgf mWWP.v5 W,,J,LM 5 5 f : , 4 'HQ i f Q . FOOTBALL The Trail of the Smoky Bears of '55 The Sevier County High Smoky Bears assembled Monday, August 15, 1955, to start pre-game practice. The first session was characteristic of practice throughout the year under head coach, Roger Coggins, assistants, Bob Davis and Royce Loveday. The 1955 Bears found many problems at the start of the season. Foremost among these was the installing of a new offense with primarily inexperienced boys. ln the first game inexperience and the new offense, which was a little ragged, took its toll. The fighting Bears bowed to Knoxville Powell, 14-6. The Bears showed improvement and won their next three games, defeating Tellico Plains, 13-65 Loudon, 6-U5 and Knoxville Farragut, 20-0. ln the Farragut game three boys were injured. ln the Newport game the most tragic event of the year occured: Iimmy Hardin, blocking-back, was fatally injured. The next game, which was scheduled with Knoxville Central, was cancelled. The next week the Bears bowed to a strong Greenville team, 27-6. Later a rebounding team of the Smoky Bears came from behind to tie Iefferson City, 7-7. At the homecoming game, which was played on Alumni Field, the Bears defeated the Chilhowee Lions, 19-O. The final game was lost to Carter on a muddy field by a score of 12-O. The Little Smoky Bowl on Thanksgiving Day ended in a 6-6 tie with Clinton. 96 via ' W 195 5 RECORD e Schedule They Powell 14 Tellico Plains 6 Loudon U Farragut O Newport 13 Central KCancelledJ Greenville 27 Iefferson City 7 Harrison Chilhowee 0 U Carter 12 5 6 Clinton ri fi' 5 l A f F' . v L, nv 4 .
