we f-Qicfe L to R Mr Blackwelder Euf1eneJenkuns Jr Mildred Moon Bull Herndon Betty K Shanton Mary Lee Thomas Margaret Jones Dortha Faye Brown Ann Thompson John Herndon George Herndon Barbara Jean Wulson Erghlg sux The Sevuer County Hugh School Band was organized as a freshman band un February I945 by Mrs Lee Fox of Sevuervulle who sponsored the class for four consecutive years Mrs Juanita Hannah of Knoxville was employed as band director During the furst year there were twenty one members meeting once a week for lessons In the summer of I946 Mr Duck Jones was hired to direct and work with the band for the next two years Through his work and the enthusiasm of Mrs Fox and Mr Roy Ledwell this class band rapidly grew unto a hugh school band During the fall of l948 the furst uniforms were purchased these were wune colored After Mr Jones David Pack spent many hours un helping develop a marching band Its furst public appearance was made un the opening of Oak Ridge where they won many complu ments for the performance there Luther Scarlet was the first drum major and Irene Ogle the furst band sponsor The mauorettes were Mary Nelle Shanton Betty K Shanton Mary Lee Thomas and Helen House holder After four years the school board secured a regular band master Mr C B Blackwelder Under his leadership the band has grown un number to seventy fuve and ranks among the leadung hugh school bands of East Tennessee The present drum major IS Eugene Jenkins Jr and the present band sponsor Mildred Moon of the Class of 51 At all Important programs un Sevuer County the band plays a prominent part Its per formances at our football games have been both entertaunung and glamorous The school us greatly indebted to Mr Blackwelder for his work un making thus band the pride of Sevuer County Hugh caps and copes with white shirts and pants. The membership had increased to twenty-eight.
