N Ianuary 1941 the Freshman class looked forward to four years of high school life here at Senn. Now in 1945 they can look back upon those four years and be proud. The class chose Herb Haberstroh for president, backed by Bob McCracken, vice president and Art Lueders, Marshal Iudge. There were runoffs for secretary, treasurer and luncheon chairman. The re- sults showed that Shirley Swank, Elmer Linden and Corinne Childress were thought capable of filling those offices. Throughout the semester this class made known its outstanding scholastic record, and its willingness and spirit in taking part in school activities. Dependability and alertness were shown when it came to Various school functions and the pur- chasing of stamps and bonds for the war effort. The Senior Luncheonkthe last complete gathering of class and teachers at the Edgewater Beach was an illustrious event at which classmates thoughtfully remem- bered the boys who had to leave for serv- ice pervious to that day. The graduation exercises held in the Senn Auditorium made a perfect ending to high school careers of the Class of Ianu- Qfy, 1945. HE Class of june, 1945, had long been awaiting their last semester at Senn, but as it began there were many whose memories reflected back to September, 1941, when they entered. Graduation prep- arations started, however, and first on the list was the election. Although the compe- tition was strong, tall Eric Nyberg was chosen to represent the class as presi- dent, with Lawrence Krulewitch his chief assistant in the office of Vice-president. Sandford Arenberg was responsible for class jewelry and money matters, whereas Marjorie Wallace took care of the grad- uation announcements and all literary matters. At the heads of the Prom and Luncheon committees were Enid Reich and loyce Bahusky, respectively, and Hans Bauer did a noble job as marshal judge. One of the greatest thrills of that se- mester, which will long be remembered, was of our Senior Basketball Team, who won the City Championship for the year, after a long succession of victorious games. Prom night-june l64might be called the end of a perfect year as it was planned to perfection by Enid Reich and her committee. june 21, the day of the luncheon and graduation, was the fulfillment of our every dream. Our thoughts and thanks will often go back to Principal Davidson and our Senior Adviser, Dr. Zimmerman, for their splendid guidance through four of our happiest years. Hope Dietelbaum All School Council ENN All School Council proved be- yond the shadow of a doubt during the fall semester that school government by the students is successful. The council is headed by Senn's Princi- pal, Mr. Davidson. The delegates include the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer of each class, and in addi- tion 3A, 4B, and 4A Marshal Iudges, and 4A luncheon chairman. ln addition to this the Council includes a member from each division room so that they may report all new activities. In this way they learn more about Senn and may take part in the direct planning of many affairs. This semester's accomplishments were many, among which was the Thanks- giving Collection. ln this the students out- did themselves by contributing more than their quota. The amount due was then given to the Children's Aid Society. With the excess money a grand party was given for the children at the Chicago Parental School. This past year our attention has been directed more than ever toward the vari- ous War Bond and Stamp drives. The Council pushes these drives knowing that each bond bought brings Victory closer. The lune Council lived up to the excel- lent example set for them by the fall Coun- cil. They too, were active in the sale of War Bonds and Stamps and got behind the paper drives to make them a credit to Senn. When the Red Cross drive was going on the Council backed this to its successful end. Another thing accredited to the Iune Council is the feeling of goods sportsman- ship they promoted among the students. In their elections they found room to include another member to the list of offi- cers by electing a Prom Chairman. Yes, Senn is proud of the l944-45 All School Council and its director, Principal David M. Davidson, for all they have ac- complished not only for the War Effort but for the school as well. The theme is implied, the in- side and outside ot a war time school in action. This year's Co-editors-in-chief, Helen O'Brien and Edna Walters, stayed in the publications room busily engrossed with Work long after the last straggling student had lett the school and the janitors had locked the doors. Also well acquainted with the pump room exit were Lois Chimberott, the hard- working Biography editor, and her ready, willing and able assistant, Lucile Scanlan. lncluded in the hardworking and proud staff are Verna Baldwin, Clubs' editor, and Page 68 lean Doerscher, Organizations' editor. Both girls worked hard to bring about the launching of the school annual. Sports Writeups were edited by Yakir Korey. lune Voerg and Ann Touliatos, the busi- ness co-managers, carred more than their share of the work with never-ending energy. Who knows what work and hopes go into planning and starting the Annual bet- ter than Hildegard Cedergren, the tireless Fall business manager, and managing editor Lucile Burns? Our unending thanks go to Mr. Robert- son and the six panelers, Bob Nelson, Bob Larson, lack Eisenmann, Kurt Teichert, Boy Fagerman, and Gordon Van Dover, who worked hard and well to help make the Annual into something we can all be proud of. Senn News HAT scratching of pencils and clatter of typewriters which can be heard so distinctly towards the southern end of the west corridor of our vast school, is merely the Senn News Staff in action-beating deadlines, driving copy, keeping within government regulations, proofreading, dummying, and handling runoffs. From the jumble of What's another word for this? How do you spell that? Typist please! emerge such columns as Sparks 'n' Spice, Vesuvius, The Bulldog, Long Ago -But Not So Par Away and From the Field. At the big editor's desk during the fall semester things revolved about proficient Co-editors-in-chief Phyllis Bergguist and Virginia Archibald. Francis Cosmas, Shir- ley Diamond, and Marcell Soloman, capa- ble assistant editors, did a grand job of helping them, while as Ellen Lonergan took charge of the galleys, Man-about- school Lee Stern was the sports editor, Elmer Benz the veteran Sennites in Service columnist, and Ierry Groner the cartoonist. Ace business managers Beverly Medow and Mildred Aidem worked with efficient Lois Segal, circulation manager, to keep Page 70 the books straight. Miss Corcoran was of course always on hand to give advice: Miss Kunz to take the money. The spring staff consisted of loan Katz and Gloria Gasul as co-editors-in-chief, Yakir Korey as sports editor, Floralee Chark as feature editor, Ilene Lippman as news editor, and loan Kaufman, Dorothy Miller and Dorothy Seratan as copy edi- tors. Iune Voerg handled all money mat- ters as business manager, and Anastosia Touliatas kept circulation up to par as circulation manager. Big Homecoming and Bulldog issues, a Halloween Humor edition printed on orange paper and a special green edition for the Freshies, and the graduation paper will be especially remembered as the work of this wonderful group. During the spring semester the new staff began things with a Patriotic number, followed by a super spring sports edition, after which came one dedicated to the boys and girls of the school. With the graduation issue in lune another year of the recording of Senn High's history was completed by the Senn News. Workers HE chief characteristics of the workers are an awareness of what makes a good theater and an eternal curiosity. This curiosity led them to study this year: Chinese theater and masks, the artistic suspension of disbelief, how to make rows and rows of property books, and the de- sign of Willow Ware china. Neos, who are the new recruits, de- signed model stages, portraying a Shake- sperian play as an introduction to actual stage Work. When they will have learned Domos, they will be eligible for the stage crew. According to their various interests, Domos are formed into committees on pub- licity, settings, costumes, technical prob- lems, etc. The workers' main problem is that of constructing a background for a play which will provide the right atmosphere, yet it must never intrude upon the audi- ence's senses. To a large degree, Workers have achieved this in the first semester play, The Swan and in Once and For All, the spring play, both given at Loyola Theater. The Turtle Dove, luliet and Ro- meo, and a real melodrama, The Dead Sister's Secret, were given at the Cordon Club. A pageant like program was also produced for the Christmas season. Helene Teichert, loan Hinton, Bob Young, Electra Kakarakis and Charles Shepard were the spark plugs of the first semester. ln the second semester, Connee Klossner, Enid Fisher, the two Marilyns, Miller and Miss- ing, Bonnie Yaney, and Herb Zinn achieved distinction. Perhaps the greatest requirement for Workers is a large dose of common -sense. You can readily see why-Miss Doniat has it. Page 73 Players VEN though Players got off to rather a slow start in the Library while their regular room was being reiuvenated, they have come through with a homerun to make this year one of their most success- ful seasons. Though numerous difficulties of various kinds were encountered they put on two grand plays, in the fall, a melo- drama downtown for the Cordon Club and the other The Swan at the Loyola Theater for the whole school. Both plays were a tremendous success and a real tribute to the director Miss Skillen, whose motto, The show must go on, and whose untir- ing help and effort guided the group to do a bigger and better job. This past season has been a lot of fun as every player will agree. The job of keeping up the standards of Players has been taken over by the new group, who are doing a really capable job practicing for two plays to be presented downtown, and the great school play of l945. All is not fun, however, for every Player is Constantly reminded of the many former Players who are fighting for our country. Rarely does a day pass without a Player, fifty per cent of whom are in uniform and stationed from England to the South Pacific, comng back to see D. T. This goes to show all the more the dear spot each holds in his heart of pleasant and wonderful memo- ries of Players gone past. This year one of the high spots was the Parents' Tea to which all the parents of the Players were invited. For the first time the new social room which was admired by everyone was used for the purpose. The Players themselves did the serving and furnished entertainment in the form of a short play and music. The officers for the year were Ronnie Born and lules Beskin, fall and spring presidents respectively: the vice-presidents Ralph Anderson and Bill Calm: secretaries leanne Bolan and Betty Kardishg other offices were held by Audrey Edson, and Annemarie Anrod, as Historian, and Pris- cilla Griswold and lean Agnew, as Treas- urer, and Ralph Anderson and Sheldon Mazor as special Thespis Officer. IVEN impetus by the war, the Senn ROTC has become a training unit for men going into the services. The whole program has been revised with all empha- sis placed on pre-induction military in- struction. For this purpose 80 Enfield rifles have become part of the regular equip- ment of the Regiment. Besides the special manuals and training aids, restricted war department films were shown often to the cadets. Entering his third year as instructor, newly promoted Sergeant Iames P. Iatro- pulos can look back with pride on the achievements of the last year. Sgt. Iatro- pulos has devoted the valuable experience gained as commanding officer of the Waller High School ROTC in l928 toward the improvement of the Senn unit. Senn's Rifle Team, itself in its initial year, ably represented the school in nu- merous matches. ln the fall semester a new procedure was initiated. School let- ters were awarded to the six top-scoring cadets on the Senn Rifle Team. Those receiving letters last semester included: lst Lt. Thomas Sugars, Sgt. Peter lacob- chuk, Staff Sgts. lohn Linn and lohn Tay- lor, and Cadets Robert Anderson and Marvin lverson. At the close of the semester, Medal Awards were presented to the following cadets: 2nd Lt. Wilfred Calm, outstanding cadet officer: lst Lt. Ted Towne, outstand- ing platoon leader: Sgt. Herman Unger, outstanding sergeant: Cpl. William Har- low, outstanding corporal: Sgts. Sidney Eichenbaum, Clarence Baldwin, and Ar- thur Norrins, outstanding uniformed ca- dets: and Cadets Thomas Hughes, lack Iones, and Leroy Karres, outstanding Freshmen. Lt. Col. William Daugherty, who led the regiment during the fall semester, received the Officers' Efficiency medal, and Cpl. Ernest Partos won the NCO Efficiency award. Others who received medals were Sgt. Page Picked Platoon The American Legion Special Award for Officers Proficiency was awarded to Capt. Arnold Weil: the American Legion Auxiliary Medal was won by 2nd Lt. Don Gallayg while the Legion Outstanding Company Award went to Capt. Robert Geudtner. Lt. Col. William Daugherty commanded the Regiment during the fall semester. He was ably assisted by Majors Richard Haas, Robert Borgstrom, lohn Leengran, and William Russo. ln the spring semester Lt. Col. Arnold Weil took command of the unit. The new- ly promoted field officers were Majors Thomas Sugars, Thomas McCrowen, Wil- fred Calm, and Don Gallay. Rifle Team Page 80 Company A One of the major branches of the Senn ROTC is the regimental staff. Robert Shaw, Range Otticerg 2nd Lt. larnes Nelson, Supply Officer: Master Sergeant Robert Sidenius, regimental clerk: and SfSgt. Robert Vihon, clerk. Another branch of the ROTC is the Color Guard. ln the tall semester, under the command of 2nd Lt. Don Olsen, the Color Guard performed for the football games and for almost every assembly. When the spring semester came around, 2nd Lt. William Erickson took over the job. They could be seen almost any Wednesday morning participating in the reviews. This semester, again collecting for the Red Cross, the Senn ROTC contributed over SZOOUUO besides the contributions of the cadets in their various home-rooms. ln May came the long waited for and thoroughly prepared for Annual Federal Inspection of the Regiment. For the 5th consecutive year Senn earned the top rating of Honor School. Always endeavor- ing to bring honor improvement to the school the ROTC remains a major factor in school lite. Company D Page 82 Companies E and F 2' C19 Senn ROTC Band Bcmd WO performances, sell-outs, the best show ever presented here. Senn will always remember the Minstrel Show and Band Concert, sponsored by the band, aided by the mixed chorus in November. Then came the Spring Concert with solo- ists Howie Ader, saxophonist, Sally Bros- mand and Lillian Phillips, pianists. ln Captain Ostergren is found the real story of this year's success. Besides being a wonderful band instructor, he is a hard working showman. Student commanders of the band were Cadet Major William Russo, and Cadet Captain Howard Ader in the fall and spring semesters respectively. They pre- sided over inspection held to fit band mem- bers for the Federal ROTC Inspection. The non-coms are very important to keep order in the various sections. Richard Astrahan was First Sergeant. At all football games, pep and Green and White assemblies the band was found boosting school spirit. In preparation for their concerts and the City Band Contest band members rehearsed 8th and 9th periods, even after school several nights a week. In the City Solo Contest, Senn had fine representation. Howie Ader received the only S rating given, in the saxophone con- test. Two clarinetists, Yale Allen and Pete Matz, took away E's, while Hylie Ward, freshman trumpeter, was graded G. Later Yale Allen, Louis Ellenhorn, Pete Matz, and Bob Stacey entered the Clarinet en- semble contest, receiving a rating of E. One step below the Concert Band is the Military Band, under the direction of the commanders of the ROTC Band, assisted in concerts and other activities. These players and those of the lunior and Begin- ners' Bands are very ambitious students, who strive for placement in the Concert Band. The Senn Swing Band is made up of a few Concert Band members. Recently it has been placed under the directorship of Captain Ostergreng Louis Ellenhorn is con- ductor, while lrwin Tunch is business manager. Many service men former band mem- bers visit 425 to tell the students what their band training meant. The Senn Band Parents Association stands behind the band in all activities. Two parties were sponsored by this organi- zation, one to raise for instruments, the other to honor the band members, at which time medals and awards were given to eligible boys and girls. The corps, composed of girls from the Concert Band and Baton Twirlers, held inspections every Thurs- day morning in the ROTC Room, which were as rigid as those of the ROTC itself. There were stiff competitions among the girls for merits and the coveted earning of awards. Football games found the twirlers on the band- victory. field and the other girls with the playing and cheering the team to The corps is not only a school but functions as an extra-curricular activity club as well. Meetings are held at the homes of the various members every other Monday evening where activities and socials are planned. The highlights of the year for the corps were the two luncheons given at the close of each semester honoring the two sponsors, Captain Ostergren and Sergeant latropulos. This year found many of the members gradu- ating, but the new members will keep the high standards. Girls' Chorus ENN Girls' Chorus, numbering over forty selected soprano and alto sing- ers, meet daily tor rehearsal in room 340 under the direction of their leader, Miss Cameron. This ensemble group of singers are very ambitious to accomplish a higher standard of performance each semester they are in the choir. Their repertoire oi three and tour-part. songs of a patriotic and classical variety have entertained on several occasions Senn school assemblies, Faculty teas, and P.T.A. groups. The chorus was pleased to accept the invitation to sing an evening's program of songs at Iamieson Grammar School on the occasion of Father's Night Concert spon- sored by the P.-T.A. The semester's work gave special prep- aration tor the group of songs to be sung at the Annual Spring Festival on the eve- ning of Iune the eighth in Senn Hall As- sembly. The request number, Schubert's Ave Maria, was sung in Latin, and brought forth warm applause from the large audi- ence present. The following members of the choir take care of many details and responsibilities throughout the year organized as follows: President, Ioan Kiesterp Vice-President, Mary Spirosg Treasurer, Betty Lou lones: Secretary, Carol Zander: Librarian, Kath- ryn Fowlie. Accompanists: Dolores Harris, and new to the choireSonia Gamburg, whose appearance as piano soloist with the Chicago Symphony in Orchestra Hall, and also soloist with the Chicago Women's Symphony Orchestra in Grant Park, en- hances the interest and prestige for the Girls' Chorus programs ot choral, solo, and piano selections. Page 87 Mixed Chorus I-IE performances of the Mixed Chorus this year have been many, and very well executed under the able direction of Mrs. Keats. Probably the most important episode in the career of the chorus this year is their performance in the Minstrel Show, which was a huge success throughout the whole school. At Christmas time, the chorus had the honor of being invited to entertain the chil- dren of the Parental School, the program of which, consisted of songs, dances and Christmas carols by the group. The chorus also participated in the inspiring Christmas assembly and carolled through the halls. Some of the more talented members of the chorus volunteered their services in the way of entertainment at two Servicemen's Centers in Ianuary. They did very well, and the pleased officials of one of the centers invited them to have refreshments in the canteen. Shamrock Shag, a dance for the chorus members and their dates, proved a big success, and fun was had by all. lt was held in the Girls gym and the swing band provided the music. It was suggested and unanimously voted upon that the chorus present their contribution to the Red Cross, which was 95100.00 The Farmer's Frolic was presented by the group at the four assemblies in April. This idea was something entirely new and different, and the audience received it very well. ln May the group made recordings for the Citizens of Tomorrow broadcast, which was quite a thrill for them. Also, in May, the chorus was on the program of the P.-TA. meeting. Page '88 An added feature beside the usual re- hearsals is a program once a month. The members participate in this program, and the students look forward to the days when they will be entertained by their fellow singers. ' The chorus has been keeping in touch with its former members who have entered the armed forces since Mrs. Keats is di- rector, which is now two years. Approxi- mately once a month, sheets of foolscap paper are passed around, and each of the students writes a short note to the boys. They are really very diligent about an- swering the letters, which makes the group feel proud to know that they have made the chorus something that is not forgotten by absent members. ln the latter part of lune, a picnic put a close to the numerous and successful 'great moments of the group. The officers for the Fall Semester of i944 were: Iohn Leengren, president, Elmer Linden, vice-president: Helen Forde, secre- tary: and Bob Price, treasurer. In charge of robes were Treava Marti and Frank Gril- laert, with librarians Beverly Baney and Bill Record. For the Spring Semester of 1945, Beverly Baney was president: Alrik lacobson, vice-president: lean Sonnen- schein, secretary: and Frank Grillaert, treasurer. Alice Marie Meyer and Clar- ence Baldwin were in charge of robes, and lune Anglin and Tom Cartalano were librarians. The chorus owes a deep debt of thanks to their faithful accompanist, Sally Bros- man. With her everlasting patience and helpful pitches at the correct time, the suc- cess of the chorus has greatly advanced. Page 89 ge 90 SEN N ORCHESTRA Orchestra NE of the outstanding organizations of Senn is the orchestra, which has been rated in competitions as one of the best in the city. This organization is very active in all musical events sponsored by Senn, the last one being the concert held on Ianuary 17 and l9 at the modern and beautiful Loyola Theater. The audience enjoyed hearing such selections as the Overture to Norma, Bellinig One Morning in May, Carmichael: Song of the Flame, Gersh- win: Meadowlands, Knipperp and Danse Boheme from Carmen, Bizet. This con- cert was a smashing success, and differed from others given by the Senn Orchestra as it was presented outside the school, and in cooperation with the dramatic depart- ment, which gave a play on the same evenings. Other occasions at which the orchestra is present are the Spring Festi- vals and graduations, Where the orchestra plays the processional and recessional marches. Assemblies are given at various times during the semester, and the orches- tra also supplies the music at some of the P.-T.A. events. ln addition to the semi-annual concerts and graduation accompaniment, this or- ganization also participates in the City Competition for High School Orchestras, which is held each spring. For the 1944 contest, presented at Harrison Technical High School, the orchestra played, Ex- cerpts from Rosamunde by Schubert and the Procession of the Sardar from Rosamunde by Ippolitow-lvanow. As a result of these annual contests, the orchestra has retained a Superior Rating for three consecutive years. Under the able leadership of Mr. Gom- berg, there are rehearsals in school each day during the first and second periods, and besides these, after school rehearsals are held each Friday for violins, Tuesday for cellos and string basses, and Thursday for violas. Extra practice for the entire orchestra is arranged when necessary, however, this only occurs shortly before a concert. Polly Werner has the position of concert master, while the checking of music and instruments is handled by the librarian, Dolores Croson. Sally Brosman, who is known for her excellent piano accompaniments and solos, acts as Atten- dance Secretary. This musical group has a rapidly grow- ing enrollment, which now stands above 60, among which the members are as follows: First violins: Polly Werner, Martin Weininger, Marvin Shapiro, Dolores Cro- son, Evelyn Frazin, Natalie Rosenfeld, Theresia Brandstatter, Carla Cobb, and Bernard Lieberfarb. Second violins: Ru- dolph Ohrning, Franklin Sher, Bert Zim- mers, Rudolph Heiners, Fred Gross, Melvin Greenspahn, Marilyn Greenrnan, Robert Fink, Harold Feldman. Violas: Carolyn Erickson, Betty Roeschlein, Toby Cohen, George Tillquist, Gabrielle Koehler, Nancy Brougham, and Marilyn Rossie. Cellos: Herbert Bloom, Nancy Bild, Lucretia Lide, and lerry Braude. Basses: Howard Mar- kin, Sam Berger, Dolores Goldsmith, Olga Benson, and Marilyn Castle. Flutes: Sally Brosman, Gloria Brown, and Toby Baker. Oboe: Norman Perman. Clarinets: Louis Ellenhorn, Yale Allen, and Murray Allen. Saxophones: Bette Campbell, and Don Christensen. Bass Clarinet: Robert Stacy. Horns: Ralph Bohn, lim Dunkley, lim Vin- son, Loring Mandel and lra Lichton. Trum- pets: Howard Katz, Ralph Stober, Arnold Salcedo, Bill Melton, Lloyd Dobbins. Trom- bones: Kenneth Schonlau, and Stuart Albert. Percussion: William Erickson, and Robert Forslund. For those students anxious to learn to play a string instrument, the Iunior Orches- tra offers unlimited opportunities. These Sennites, under the direction of Mr. Gom- berg, meet daily in room 425 the 6th period and learn to play such instruments as violin, viola, cello, and string bass. Red Cross HE purpose of the Red Cross Club is to direct Iunior Red Cross Activities at Senn. During the club meetings, the mem- bers knit squares which are sewed into afghans for use in military hospitals. In addition, the club sponsored several drives in the past year. Last semester the club asked the student body for old play- ing cards, which the Red Cross needed to give to wounded service men on hospital ships and trains and in convalescent cen- ters. The response to this request was overwhelming. They asked for five hun- dred decks and received fifteen hundred. Then at Christmas time the club super- vised the packing of gift boxes for children in the newly-liberated lands overseas. These boxes were filled with toys and Page 92 practical gifts to delight a child's heart. Senn furnished twenty of these packages. Recently the Red Cross asked Senn to fill fifty more boxes with school supplies. The most important project of the year is the participation in the Red Cross War Fund Drive. ln l942 the Senn student body bought and equipped a Blood Donor truck which has been doing full-time service ever since. This year the Red Cross Drive, with the assistance of the Green and White Club, raised over three thousand dollars. The Red Cross Club through its various activities seeks to interest the students in the humanitarian efforts of the American Red Cross. Miss Cain sponsors this Worthy group of Sennites. Senn Parent-Teacher Association LTHOUGH working under great handi- caps, due to the world conflict, the P-TA has had a very inspiring and worth while year. Their theme, Youth Serves-We Serve Youth, was designed to meet the needs of not only the students but the community as well. The efforts of the organization were given to presenting to the school a fund for extra equipment needed, two successful tag days, conducted by Miss Mary Cavanagh, Student service chairman at Senn, and having a sum of money voted on as part payment on our Athletic Field opposite the school. Excellent work was done by Mrs. Pottage assisted by Mrs. Karth who not only re- tained, but far surpassed the last year's records with a total membership of 1,231 with a lU0'X: teacher enrollment. Groups and students have benefited great- ly by the unselfish efforts which the P-TA has constantly put forth on their behalf and to the leadership of their president, Mrs. Losch, we owe many thanks. This group set out to promote a greater interest and knowledge in the field of chemistry. This was accomplished by individual and group experiment outside of the regular class Work, talks by guest lecturers and trips to places of scientific interest. One of the large aims of the club was to keep its members posted on current develop- ments in the chemical field and, if possible, to aid in the war effort by having a repetition of the fat collection which was such a suc- cess last year. But never, it seemed, did the students become interested enough in their own school to strive to improve it. Suddenly among the Sennites there arose a small group of fellows, all With the same idea. They felt that the school could stand a great deal of improvement: so with this main purpose in mind the boys organized under the sponsorship of the person of their choice, Miss Doniat. Thus the Green and White was born. Disregarding race and creed, their mem- bers were taken from the student leaders at Senn. They were ready to accomplish deeds that had not been thought of even by the most progressive Sennites. Its aims were to further the en- joyment of reading and to better acquaint its members with worthy books and authors. Any student from 3A up to graduating seniors can qualify for membership. At the weekly, meetings current books were discussed and summaries of them given. This resulted in the exchange of opinions and viewpoints: this was very stimulating. Another activity was the study of new words found in reading with the aim of bettering vocabularies. Once a month professional book critics came to the meetings and reviewed popular books. This gave the membership an inside track on how book reviewing is done and a knowledge of the methods of literary an- alysis. Plays were drarnatized by the mem- bers on several occasions. A number of professional plays were seen and tours of cultural institutions were made. The programs were arranged by Helen Browne, program chairman. Camera Club Camera Club accomplishments have been many this year in spite of the handicaps such as the shortage of film and other ma- terials due to the War. The main purpose of the Club is to teach the members the proper way to take pictures, to develop, print and mount them, also dif- ferent phases of photography such as por- trait Work. Mr. Moore, the Club's Adviser, very kindly assisted the officers in planning meetings which would be of interest to the members. As the Club wanted every member to participate actively, each one was invited to give a talk on the special type of photog- raphy in which he was interested. The Club purchased a Hand Book which all members were welcome to use and Mr. Moore kept the dark room facilities open for any one interested in this field. A school Wide contest held early in the year proved that the members of the Camera Club had profited by what they had learned as the results of their efforts to take success- ful pictures proved highly satisfactory to all. The U. of C. tournament entry from Senn consisted of twelve members from the Se- nior Squad, and three from the lunior quintet. Possessors of an unirnpressive five win-three loss record during the prac- tice season, the Bulldogs were conceded little chance in pre-meet calculations. But the Ridge Avenue Brigade, by playing spectacular defensive ball which netted their opponents an average of only 32 points per game While they were garning a 39 point offensive average, battled their way to a Well deserved championship. The answer to the title lies in the fact that the Bulldogs possessed five potent scorers and adequat reserves. Buzz Mur- phy, Frank Walters, and Captain Bob David paced the scoring attack, While 6' 6Vz center, lack Wulf, and guard Roy Baskin, sparkled on defense. Freshman Whitey Pearson, playing in a reserve role, garnered seven points in the champion- ship encounter with Gage Park, while center-guard Larry Krulewitch, forward Iim Zwack, and guard Hans Bauer, func- tioned efficiently in substitute roles. With forwards Buzz Murphy and Bob David, center lack Wulf, and guards Bucky Walters and Roy Bas- kin, each doing his part, Senn swept through 10 consecutive victories to win their first North Section title. Beautiful teamwork highlighted the sea- son openers as the Bulldogs crushed Waller, Amundsen, and Lane, the power- houses of the North Section. As the year wore on it looked as if Senn was title bound and only Von Steuben stood in the way. But the Bulldogs cleared that hurdle by the tune of 35-33 as Walters starred. In the play-offs the Bulldogs drew Marshall, holder of fourth place in the West bracket. lt was not till the last few seconds that Senn won as Murphy's free throw put the game on ice. The final score stood 38-37. The old feud between Serin and Lane was renewed in the quarter-finals. Pre- viously whipped in sectional competition, the Indians proved tougher this time. Not enough credit can be given to Boy Baskin for his terrific work on defense. Wulf and Walters again sparked the victory. With the semi-finals coming around, Senn found itself paired with the Central Section champs, Lindblom. Capt. Bob David spearheaded a first half attack Page lll which in the long run proved the decisive factor. While lack Wulf paced the well-bal- anced scoring machine, Serin completely outplayed the Panthers from Von Steuben to take the crown, which proved to be the first time that the Bulldogs Won a major championship. The score of 32-20 was re- corded for the final game. Credit must again be handed to Captain David for his calm leadership and fine teamplay. Buzz Murphy did an excellent job on defense, leading the team in scor- ing. The all around defensive and offen- sive work of lack Wulf proved to be one of the deciding factors during the long sea- son. The guards, Bucky Walters and Boy Baskin, turned in a super defense job at all times. Alternates limmy Zwack, Hans Bauer, and Larry Krulewitch turned in creditable performances and showed them- selves vital cogs in Senn's Well-oiled cham- pionship machine. Although the Win column of Coach Gene Friker's lunior cagers is far from impres- sive, they showed great spirit when the chips were down. q After dropping the opener to Lake View, the Iuniors, sparked by forward Whitney Pearson, Capt. Ralph Ohman, and guard Marv Clein, Whipped Amundsen and Taft only to lose by heartbreaking scores to Sullivan and Steinmetz. Whitney Pearson tied the individual scoring record of l38 points in a season when he tallied on a jump shot against Sullivan in the season final. The Senn Bulldogs, also called the Green Wave because of their powerful offensive ability, won seven games in nine contests and finished in second place in the North Section, losing only to Lane, the new League champion, in Section competition. F our of the nine contests were real foot- ball thrillers. Senn opened their quest for a Sectionship by whipping Amundsen, 1943 titleholders, 7-0. Tex McCracken's one yard plunge provided the game's only score while spectacular line play by cap- tain and right tackle Herb Haberstroh, and right guard Frank Schweiding, halted all Viking offensive threats. ln defeating Taft on Friday, the 13th, the Bulldogs overcame numerous injuries, to earn a 25-20 victory. With two minutes to play, the Green Wave drove 80 yards to score the winning touchdown. The final tally came with 36 seconds to play as Kurt Teichert plunged over. Another sensational win found Senn coming from behind to whip Schurz in a powerful second half rally 19-14. The Green and Whites' only League loss was a 6-0 heart-breaker at the hands of the new North Section Champions, Lane Tech, in the annual home-coming game on Sept. 30. ln the other two Section encounters, the Green Wave crushed Roosevelt 59-0 be- hind the three touchdown efforts of Ted Kemp and Paul Gerrish, and with Kemp rewriting the record books with six touch- downs, the Bulldogs humiliated Waller 56-0. ' The Season found several members of the team earning all-star recognition. George Assimos, 185 pound guard, was elected to the all-district and all-city teams while Teddy Kemp, Chicago's leading prep scorcer with 105 points, and end Eric Nyberg, were mentioned on various all- city squads. All Section recognition was received by backs Bob Nelson and Paul Garrish, end Kenny Prott, Tackle Herb Haberstroh, and center Lee Stern. ROW 2: l-larsted, Khidirian, Smith, Coach Shaffner, Wiley, Sullivan. Fencing City Champs ALENTED Bulldog Fencers proved vic- torious for the fourth time in the ten years existence of the annual Kraft tourna- ment which was held at the Chicago Uni- versity. The team, which proved spec- tacular from all angles, was presented with a silver cup after crushing the nine other opposing entries. Star performers who represented Senn were popular Stuart Sullivan, agile Syl Wiley, and rugged George Black. Wiley and Sullivan, in the Chicago men's foils competition held at the University of Chi- cago on February l8, tied for fourth place, college men having placed l-2 ahead of them. These two, who have played so brilliantly all season, plus George Black, have been considered on par with the three musketeers of another century when it comes to whirling a saber. The mus- keteers overwhelmed, outmaneuvered, and outsmarted their cagey opponents. The boys claim that they owe all of their suc- cess to Coach Shaffner, who has been teaching them the tricks of the game since they were freshmen. The trophy, which was Won by a Senn team in l936, l937, and l939, will be kept here until next year's meet, when once again the foilers will attempt to defend the cup. The musketeers, who have prac- ticed many long and faithful hours to per- fect their form, were heavy favorites for the city-wide meet held at the Lane Tech gym. A team of four was required, so Coach Shaffner immediately decided on veteran Dick Smith to be the fourth mus- keteer and to uphold the glorious tradition of the Senn foilers. Expected to carry on Senn's reputation in the future are Fred Rockwell, who seems to be improving with age, David Stone, Fred Nimitz, Billie Marrion, Glen Layne, Dan Crowly, and Herb Clarnmage, all of whom have proved to be stalwart per- formers in a well oiled machine.
