Not only are the navigator and his assistants responsible for getting us from point A to point B, but the navigator is also tasked with orchestrating the smooth administration of several important ship-wide operations. The Medical Department, for instance, falls under the direction of the navi- gator, as do the Command Master Chief, the Command Career Counselor, the Chief Master at Arms, and the ever-important postal clerk. lt is, however, the primary responsibility of the navigation team to know where we are and where we're going. Those are tasks ofsuch critical importance that the ship could not sail without their being accomplished with a reliability approaching perfection. During the cruise, Lieutenant Commander J.T. McComb commanded the three divisions which comprise Opera- tions: OC, OIXOW, and OE. OC division, led by Ensign R. Robinette. does the actual communicating for SELLERS. The division is comprised of Rlvt's Cradiomeny and Slvt's Csignalmenp The Rlvts ensure that SELLERS can communicate not only with ships a few miles distant, but also with military command centers thousands of miles away. Rlvl's prepare and process the hundreds of radio messages that SELLERS routinely sends and receives each month. SM's utilize the traditional but no less important art of visual signalling. They perform the flag hoist Cdisplaying universally understood flags and pen. nantsp, flashing-light morse code, and semaphore gon intricate system of arm and hand signals that can also be accomplished at night with the aid of hand-held lightsj The nerve center of the modern warship is the Combat information Center CCICJ, the province of OIXOW division, led by LT. CJG3 VV. Dietrick during the cruise. ln CIC, the O33 qOperations specialistsb and the EW's CElectronic Warfare special istsb use a variety of sophisticated radars and intel. ligence evaluation techniques to supply the CO with the information he needs to make the necessary, informed decisions vital to the ship's combat role. OE division, led by LT. S. VVier, is the domain of the El CElectronics Techniciany The ET's maintain all communica- tions gear and radars. Without the troubleshooting and repair expertise of OE division, Operations Department wouldn't have operated for long during the cruise.
