CAPTAIN JOHN JAMES IVIAZACH Captain Mazach was raised in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended Vanderbilt University as a member of the ROTC program and graduated in June 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was commissioned as Ensign, United States Navy. Captain Mazach immediate- ly entered flight training at NAS Pensacola and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1967 at NAS Chase Field, Texas. His first assignment was Attack Squadron EIGHT SEVEN training in the A7B Corsair at VA-174. While attached to the Golden Warriors he completed one Vietnam deployment aboard USS TICONDEROGA CCVA-145 and a Mediterranean deployment aboard USS ROOSEVELT fCVA-425. He then received orders to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in De- cember 1970 where he sewed as a Detailer in the Aviation Assignment Section. In July 1975, Captain Mazach reported to Attack Squadron ONE ZERO FIVE after com- pleting replacement pilot training in the A7E at VA-174. While attached to the Ciunslingers, he completed two deployments to the Mediterranean aboard USS SARATOGA fCV-603 sewing as Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. ln July 1982, Captain Mazach as- sumed duties as Commander, Carrier Air Wing THREE where he served until April 1984. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V and various other unit citations and campaign ribbons. Captain Mazach is married to the former Patricia Waggoner of Nashville, Tennessee. They have two daughters, Leigh and Meg and reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
