We seem to remember the good old days in his classes, as well as the more recent memories of this past year. For his tireless efforts in making a better student council, for his friendship and aid during our groping years, and for his patience with our French pronunciation, we dedicate the 1970 edition of the SE-HI to David Garner, David Garner ---WE DEDICATE Edward Harris Education can be a drudgery to the student, orat least not very exerting. Con- sequently, it is indeed unusual to find a teacher who stimulates his students' search for knowledge while making it fun at the same time. Though he is a relatively new face in our high school lives, we have come to respect him. For his work in putting together the PROWLER and for taking some of the drud- gery out of our path, we dedicate the 29th edition of the SE-HI to Edward Harris. CLOSING THE DOOR- YET MEMORIES LINGER — oo At 8:20 each morning another day has just begun to be recorded in the annals of Seagrove High School. The crowded halls, the bustling of students, and the tension and excitement of a sports event are just a few images in the pag- eantry of our school. It is such reflections from such an important segment of our lives which | hope you will find captured beneath the covers of the SE-HI. As you know, this is the last year the SE-HI will be published. It has been my wish to go out with a bang. The SE-HI staff has worked to make this last annual the best ever. It is for this great effort that | would like to thank each member of the staff. | would also like to express a special thanks to our adviser, Miss Pinion, and to all the people who made an effort to cooperate. As we close the door on the collection of memories we call Seagrove High School, let us look forward to the new school next year, to college, to a life career, and to happiness. Yet, as we close the door and advance further along the path of life, let us leave room in our hearts for memories of the place where we lived together, laughed together, and wept together. Your Editor, Dale McKee Wine iIsvera Initiation Mr. and Miss Sweetheart Ady gummi 2er Spe ita Hard at work on the Annual The Principal’s Message Much is being said about the opening of a new school and our students that will be going to it. We wish to stress here that we are not losing our school, for the = school is our school as Seagrove is our school. This is a landmark event in that we are growing, and this makes us a part of a larger community. Moving into a new building is no reason to stop saying our school. It is a cause for increased pride not only because of the progress but also because of the opportunities afforded for increased educational advantages and for making new friends. To the seniors we say that you represent us in whatever endeavors you undertake. We assure you that as your school record is complete and as it follows you into the work world, we will do our best to polish the bright spots brighter and hope that any gray spots will fade away. As you make your way in the life of the non-student, we wish that all the breaks be favorable to you. | G. E. Braswell Principal Gerald E. Braswell Assistant Principal Ikiony Je. Syeliikere Mrs. V. A victim of esophageal varices he had missed many school days. Never complaining, always smiling, Adrian was a friend to all. His memory will remain in our hearts forever. GUASS POEM Twelve years ago, we took the first step In the long climb to reach the top. Though some times were rough and hard to face, We strived onward and did not stop. | Year by year, we steadily worked on, Struggling with homework, teachers, and tests. Now that we've reached the top of the stairs, We're glad that we gave our best. Because as we look back on the long way we've come, It's not the hard work we remember-- It's the wonderful friendships and good times we've had That we hold in our hearts very tender. The joy and fellowship of working together And striving for our one common goal Has brought us together in bonds of friendship and love, That will be with us, even when we grow old. Now that the time that we've worked for is here, And we leave the place on which we've come to rely, We take one last look back and sigh a long loving sigh As we say, Good-bye, dear old Seagrove, good-bye. Bill Spencer left and came. back to this little country town, just a village really. It’s called Seagrove, a-stone’s. throw from the) bustling town of Asheboro a few miles up the road. . Or down the road, depending on which, way you're’ traveling. . Bill Spencer grew up in Seagrove, departed to attend college at Pfeiffer, then returned to coach the school’s basketball team; 'a I-A power with such figures as 91 rebounds one night, 114 points, too. “I: guess we've been over 100 points about two other occasions,” confirmed Spéncer whose Tigers believe in living it up in their last year of. survival.’ This small school joins the consolidation movement as part of | Southwestern Randolph next fall. ; There won’t be any more Seagrove then. The Tigers aren’t particular whom they feast on. The 114 points came against Farmer, the school merging with them to form Southwestern. They also flattened - West Montgomery, the only defeat for this 2-A school. Expected Strong Team “With three starters and some other letterman back, we expectéd to field a winning team,” admitted Spen- cer, “But then we lost our opener to Benhaven after leading at the final whistle.” How’s that? Lose a game with the clock expired and one point ahead. It happened. The official called a foul) tas the hand moved to zero, Benhaven’s player stepped. to the free throw line and converted twice, and Sea- ‘grove was 0-1. The Tigers recovered, quickly, smothered their next 11 opponents before tangling with West Montgomery a second time. West socked them hard for Loss No. 2, but it’s. been: a one-way street ever _ Binge, nine victories —without another defeat. It leaves Seagrove 20-2 and a top contender for a berth in the state 1-A tourney which the Tigers just ' misséd last season. They bowed to Stoneville in district play, a’ Stoneville club which made it to ‘the state _ championship game. But Deep River gaye the Tigers a scare, down by six with only 59, seconds to go. Coach Spencer credited a pressing defense for the comeback which wiped out a 17-point at one stage, “We were ahead only once,” recalled Spencer. “That came 18 seconds from the end when one of ‘our boys stole an inbounds pass and went in for the layup. ” Deep River fell to the Tiger charge. Who Are These F ellows? Who are these fellows?. First, there’s guard Steve ‘Graves, 6-footer with a 25-point average. And 6-foot-3 . forward Phil Leach. Forward Benny Cagle (6-2) helps form the trio which started a year ago. Junior center Martin Needham stretches to 6-foot-7, and “we don’t play to him.” Guards Roger Harris and Al Copple, swing man Daryl Richardson, guard Dennis Crisco, sophomore center Mike Lamb (6-6) all get into the Tiger Act. “We're pretty much a running team,” agreed Coach Spencer, “hitting 52 per cent of our shots. But we have to calf on our defense occasionally, like in the Deep River game.” The Tigers finished 20-10 and just missed a trip to the state tourney in 1969. With their rapid-fire offense and excellent height, they’re well on the way toward attain- ing heights a Seagrove team seldom even dreamed about in past years. This little school may bow out in style.
