Our lives have been enriched, our views broadened, our sense of values quick- ened. Long after names and dates become hazy, we will have our ability to reason, to tolerate and understand, to meet life with a joy and a determina- tion, for such is the essence ofa liberal arts education. These are the bases for life which Scripps has sought to develop in us, and these are what she be- queathes to us at graduation. Together we receive these gifts, for them we are grateful. After we separate, each to live her own life, perhaps our appre- ciation of Scripps will become even deeper. Emerson believes The years teach much which the days never know. Perhaps the years ahead will be the ones to show us the real Scripps. lf it is only through our own experience of life itself that we will come to know Scripps, let us then consider that we have made her acquaintance in four years, during the rest of our lives, let us cultivate her friendship. The class of T957 paid off, showing ingenuity and talent to the rest of the col- lege. Faculty and students enjoyed their evening to- gether at the barbcue pit and the three councils gave glowing accounts of roughing it at ldylwild. Senior Vespers was a veritable inspiration to remind us that we had much we might be grateful for as Thanksgiving approached. ln the Fall, chrysanthemums brightened Euca- lyptus Court and the tulip trees shed their golden leaves. WINTER Winter WhirI Winter come, ond with it the Winter Whirl . . . moy it ever be remembered in Scripps history os o donce which, in od- dition to being o sociol success, wos olso o finonciol one. At Christmos, Browning took their guests south of the Rio Gronde to o Mexicon celebrotion. Dorsey brought to lite l-Ions Christion Andersen's story, The Lost Dreom of the Old Ook Tree. Toll presented on impressive Christmas Through the Ages, while Groce Scripps remembers oll the splendor thot is their troditionol Medievol Dinner. Following the holl porties, we lighted our condles ond song corols together os we found the memoroble tdbledu in the orchwoys ot the Morgoret Fowler Gorden. In Winter, the bore liquid ombers were silhouetted symme- try ogoinst o cleor sky, ond Boldy donned cn snow Cop. Everywhere, everywhere, it's Christmas ,gg 5? Isabelle Surcouf as the Madonna SPRING With Spring came Surprise Day when we all headed for Shadow Moun- tain Club to spend a lazy day sunning, swimming, sliding, and talking with carefree abandon, forgetting all the work ahead of us as if it didn't exist. The Fiesta saw us having a gay evening of tacos, costumes, and Spanish dancing. As always, we awaited May Fete and the freshmen gave a com- mendable performance. Then too, there was the Turf Supper followed by Swim Club's Water Ballet which took us on a world cruise aboard the SS Scripps. The sophomores gave their Supper Dance and the juniors received their senior rings at the Ring Ceremony. The seniors tried to forget bacca- laureates and think instead of the Senior Ball and green commencement robes. Evryone lost some sleep over finals and some people lost a greater amount over Summer plans. With Spring too came leaves on the elms, making green arches over Elm Tree Lawn. Azaleas were everywhere and snap-dragons gave vibrant color to the Ming Garden. ,3 May Pete Row I: May Queen Karen Van Voorst.
