l l Mrs. Willa Kirby When school closes this year, Mrs. Kirby will hang up her apron and bid good- bye to menu planning and lunch preparation for Scotts Valley School children. A tireless worker, Mrs. Kirby began her career as a cafeteria cook when she would come to help Mrs. Johanson prepare hot meals for hungry school children. This was in 1946, and their workroom was what was then the Mother's Roomf' Their equipment was a small sink, a stove, and a table. Mrs. Kirby is a native Californian, having been born and reared in Santa Cruz. She attended Santa Cruz High School where she met Mr. Kirby. They were married on March 10, 1922, in Santa Cruz. This year they are celebrating their forty-third wedding anniversary. The Kirby's have five sonsg Ray, Jr., Edward, William, Richard, and John. All are graduates of Scotts Valley School. Four of the boys are married and so Mr. and Mrs. Kirby have seven grand-daughters and seven grand-sons. Three of their grandchildren are attending Scotts Valley School at the present time. .-Mrs. Kirby's interest in our school is more than that of. just a proud mother and Scotts Valley resident. She has always been willing to do just a little bit more for her school. For two years, 1943-1944 and 1944- 1945, she was president of the Parent Teachers Association. Then too, whenever there was an extra meal to be cooked or an extra cookie to bake, Mrs. Kirby was there with a smile to do her part. She says she has enjoyed her work and the children, but she will be happy to retire. We are glad she will now have time to do things for herself but we shall miss her sunny smile and delicious cooking. We shall all miss his happy smile and teasing very much. How- ever, we know how anxious he is to have the time to indulge in his favorite sports: hunt- ing and fishing. Mr. Kirby was born in St. Joseph, Missouri. I-le came to California in 1918, living first in Santa Barbara, and later moving to Santa Cruz. While he was in high school, he was a famous and successful athlete, which probably accounts for his love and interest in all sports. In the past several years, he has been very active in Little League groups in the Scotts Valley area. When Mr. Kirby began working at Scotts Valley in 1946, the school consisted of three rooms, four teachers, an auditorium, and a 1936 Federal passenger bus to transport children to and from school. I-le has watched it grow into the present school system of three separate schools with 36 rooms, 41 teachers, and 5 buses. Mr. Kirby, like his wife, has always been willing to do just a little bit more to keep his school a healthy, happy, place in which to live, work, and play. Whenever we needed a bus driver to take us on a field trip, a skating party, or a picnic, Mr. Kirby would give up his Saturday or evening to drive us where we would want to go. Long before school each morning, he would be there checking on heat in the rooms or cleaning the grounds, and long after we were home in the evening, he would still be at school, sweeping and dusting getting the rooms ready for tomorrow. We are happy that now he will be able to go fishing and hunting Up North, but we know we shall miss him, for there will never be another man like Mr. Kirby. By Jim Baily
