Q50 V0fumE l Schuylkru Haven: I-L5lq5Cl,,,.,1 Scfwuylkxll Havaw, Pa, juremurh DOWN through the years there has come to us a rich heritage from our Ger- man forefathers whom we call the Pennsylvania Dutch. They had a hardiness of spirit and determination that enabled them to come to a vast wilderness and build a life rich with color and folklore. Here they worshipped the God they chose and made clear the path that we might worship him freely also. They have passed to us the task to continue as they did in working for what We believe right. It is then fitting that we should base this the record of our high school endeavours on the traditions of these hearty people, and with pleasure we, the class of 1954, present this edition of the Blue and Gold. 2 Ut Q33 's 'Q 0' t Q ssiuihtgg - ' O x . b fgfo X Seuvts w I r i l 1 4 1 , , WILLIAM K. All the worthy friends we made in our school days, We'll hold them dear, As we start along the great path to success, We hope to find, much happiness. So now Good-bye, Haven High. Words by-PATRICIA AuNosT BARBARA KERSCHNER ANNE CORRADO H it Class Motto: You can live without a brother, but not without a friend. Class Colors: Black and Gold Class Flower: Red Rose 31 :WAS VSV CLASS POEM The years too quickly have sped by, As high school days draw to an end, But memories will linger long, Of happy days and of each friend, With high ideals we now go forth, To try our best in all we do, And we shall always strive to take A course that will be straight and true. And as we travel on life's road, We offer up a whispered prayer, That God will safely keep and guide, Each classmate, in his tender care. We know that we will ne'er forget The joys and sorrows of these years, The carefree, happy times of youth, And sadness of our parting tears. ROBERTA WANNER CLASS HISTORY . . . It's finally here'-our Senior year. None of us will ever forget this year or our other two years spent in senior high school. Silly Sophomoresn was the tag given to us that September 1950. Our homeroom teachers Mr, Kerschner, Miss Reinhart, and Mr. Stauffer helped us through that year. We elected Barry Gordon, President: Karen Koch, Vice- President: Shirley Mortimer, Secretary: and Pat Aungst, Treasurer. Holding our first social event, The April Showers Dance , was the high light of that year. Also we chose our class rings. In September 1952 we took a name Iol1y Iuniors . Elected President was Bill Spotts: Vice-President, Bob Beckerg Secretary, Shirley Mortimer: and Treasurer, Ron Rhen. Mr. Brown became our class advisor. Miss Bausum and Mrs. Ross assisted him. The Iunior Play, Stage Struck , was enjoyed by all attending. The Christmas Dance and Iunior Prom were held in the high school gym. On September, 1953 began our Sophisticated Senior days. We elected Bob Croneberger, Presidentg Ron Rhen, Vice-President: Shirley Mortimer, Secretary: and Patsy Aungst, Treasurer. Again Mr. Brown, Mrs. Ross and Miss Bausum sponsored us. An outstanding sports page was written in the history of the Schuylkill Haven High School when a new peak was reached by winning not only the football championship, but basketball also. The Eastern Conference title was won by the football team, a fitting tribute to Coach Stau1fer's celebrating his Silver Iubilee. The basketball squad, not to be outdone, came home with the Class B District Eleven crown. Seniors were also active in Student Counptil, Band, Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, Choruses, baseball, cheerleading, twirling, and EEA. The Senior Play Seventeenth Summer a romantic comedy, was a big success. We again sponsored the Christmas Dance. The never to be forgotten Washington trip with its fond memories came and went, all too soon. We, the Class of 1954, wish to thank everyone who helped make our high school career a successful one. At the convention banquet of the Columbia Scholastic Press, held in the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Miss Reinhart was one of 23 advisers of school newspapers and seven direc- tors of state and regional school press associations to receive the coveted gold key and certificate of recognition. Miss Reinhart has been active in journalism for 18 years. For the Columbia Scholastic Press Association she has con- ducted clinics on press work at the annual convention. Her articles have appeared in the Press Review. She has also served as a judge in press contests. How fortunate have been the Haven Fax Staff members who have profited from her training and experience! 56 The Haven Fax The Haven Fax again received a first place rating in its class of 300 students or less. This award was announced at the Columbia Schol- astic Press Conference held in New York City the weekend of March 12. First place has been awarded to the Haven Fax each year since 19410. ln 1945, 1946, and 1953 it was a HMeda- list , which meant that it was one of a few newspapers selected for exceptional merit from those receiving first place rating. FOOTBALL Eastern Conference Champions Coach William Stauffer celebrated his 25th year as head football coach at Schuylkill Haven High School by winning the Eastern Football Conference, the largest in the state. Schuylkill Haven finished the regular season by win' ning eight, losing one, and tying one. The team got off to a good start by beating Ashland and Minersville. In the third game they were tied by a strong Lansford team but won the next three games in a row. The team's only loss came at the hands of Muhlenberg. In this game we were handicapped by some of the starting array being sidelined by injuries. After that game the team was not to be stopped. After completing our regular season we found our team had beaten Pottsville by a few percentage points to win the Southern Division of the Eastern Conference. The acid test came when the team- met a strong Scran- ton Tech eleven. Not many sports writers expected the Hurricanes to come out on the long end of the 28 to 6 score, but they did. It was the largest margin by which any team had won the colorful playoff between the Northern and Southern Division teams of the Conference. The game was very hard foughtg the Hurricanes were outweighed by about sixteen pounds per man. Coach Bill Stauffer started the season with only ten lettermen returning from the 1952 season: there were Nick LaScala, Bob Becker, Kim Kaufman, loe Colitz, Bob Hoffman, and Ray Shuey from the line, and Bruce Hainley, Doc Vitelle, Don Hafer. and Bob Drey from the backfield. A great deal of credit goes to the two assistant coaches Harry Hummel and Leroy Heckman. Captain Carmen Vitelli with his speed, Don Hafer the power runner, Bob Drey with his passing, and Bruce Hainley filled out the starting backfield. Barry Gordon and Bob Schaeffer also played good ball for the Hurri- canes. The line which one of the local sports writers called the seven blocks of granite consisted of Nick LaScala, Kim Kaufman, Wes Kirby, loe Colitz, Hugh Hoke, Bob Becker, and Ron Rhen. Ray Shuey and Bob Hoffman saw as much action as anyone on the team. Mziny a long day was spent by Mr, Stauffer and his team on the practice field, but it paid off when Mr. Stauffer produced one of the best teams ever to come out of Schuylkill Haven High School. Coach Leroy Heckman led the courtmen to three championships never before won by a Schuylkill Haven club. First place in the South Schuylkill League, Shaughnessy Playoff winners, and District Eleven Cham- pionship, all fell to the Havenites. Co-captained by less Hill and Ron Rhen, the Blue and Gold squad brought four trophies back to their Alma Mater. Playing a total of 25 games, the Havenites finished with a 19-6 record. Not counting the exhibition games, the Havenites rolled up an impressive 17-3 league record, playoffs included, The starting five of the 1954 squad included five senior boys: less Hill, co-captain and center: Ron Rhen, co-captain and high scorer, Nick LaScala, rebound man and smart ball handlerg Snook Kaplan, guard and snappy playmaker: Bill Spotts, speedy forward and excellent feeding pivot: Wes Kirby, snappy guard. Other members of the 1954 squad who were instrumental in the season's victories are Hugh Hoke, Bruce Hainley, Ray Shuey, Bob Meck, Ken Herb, and Bob Drey. Because of the extended football season, the Havenites got off to a bad start, losing the first three games. Fin- ally, the Hurricanes started to roll and finished the season on top of the league. After defeating Pine Grove and Tremont, to win the Shaughnessy Playoffs, the Hur- ricanes met and outscored Fountain Hill to capture the District XI Championship. Mount Penn then overpow- ered the Havenites, to end the 1954 basketball season.
