WALTER HINKLE IOSEPH MANBECK School Board SCHLIYLKILL HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL extends its gratitude to the Board of School Directors for the numerous facilities which they have provided for the benefit of the students. An agricultural course was begun and a building for the use of the vocational agricultural students was erected. Plans are being made for a cafeteria to be added during the summer. We, who have already enjoyed some of these facilities, know that the future classes will be sincerely apprecia- tive of the progressive steps made through the efforts of Mr. Christman and the school board. 6 A Message From the Supervising Principal IT IS A PLEASURE to make this contribution to the 29th volume of the Blue 6 Gold, product of the Class of 1951. The addition of this yearbook to the archives of the school will be a welcome one. Although this marks the end of your public school career, we trust that it represents only a beginning of an adventure in learning that may continue for a lifetime. On the proscenium in your auditorium is the quotation from Petronius- Education is a treasure and culture never dies. Keep this thought alive in your heart as you march down the corridors of time. Best wishes to you all for a bright, busy and rewarding future -f one that will always be best experienced in a free and liberty-loving America. PAUL S. CHRISTMAN 7 V A Message From Our High School Principal YOU, the members of the Class of 1951, are graduating during a period of unrest and uncertainty, This throws much responsibility upon you as indiv- iduals, as well as doubt concerning your future. The question of the day is democracy versus communism. We are fighting to save democracy today just as much as at any time in the past. It is therefore the duty of all good Ameri- cans to take their stand for that which they believe and enact those citizenship duties for which the American education system has prepared them. I am sure all of you will accept the responsibilities placed upon you and do your part faithfully and courageously in defending your country or in civilian employ. Your passing from high school is at a time when opportunities are plentiful for all who wish to further themselves. Many new fields of endeavor are open- ing to those who have ambition and vision. The world of work, however, re- quires sacrifice and persistence if real success is to be achieved. I am sure that the Class of 1951 has just the necessary characteristics to be those worthy citizens of which our country is in much need today. Be the kind of an in- dividual who will be a credit to your country and to your school. PAUL E. HARTRANFT 8 MR. AARON YOUNG, CLASS ADVISER Appreciation E, THE CLASS OF 1951, express to Mr. Aaron Young, our class adviser, our sincere appreciation for the interest he has shown and the service he has rendered to the class. He has helped to make our three years in Schuylkill Haven High School a most pleasant experience. 9 I' . L fDown Sidej LAWRENCE L, IMBODEN B. S. Let us review these three years so that we may see how wonderful they have been. Remember that year in tenth grade? We started our Senior High school studies under the supervision of homeroom teachers, Miss Reinhart, Mr. Kerschner, and Mr. Young, who served as Class Adviser. We chose the follow- ing as class officers: President, Darrell Koch: Vice President, Wendell Oswald: Secretary, Nancy Dewald: and Treasurer, Lois Brown. The high-light of this year was the Annual Sophomore Crystal Ball Dance held in the gaily decorated gymnasium. Everyone present had an enjoyable time and we were glad to have made our first social event a big success. September, 1949. we returned as jolly lun- iors and were glad to find that again our Class Adviser was Mr. Young, assisted by Mr. Imboden: and Mrs. Christman, first semester: Miss Rodgers, second semester, as other home- room teachers. Darrell Koch was again chosen as President: Robert Shaup, Vice President: janet Moyer, Secretary: and Lawrence Hum- mel, Treasurer. The lunior Play, entitled The Skeleton Walks, was a hit with everyone. Due credit must be oiven to the coaches, Mr. Young and Miss Rodgers, and the members of the cast whose fine portrayal of characters made the play a financial success. Chancing off Oscar, Mr. Young's pet rab- bit, as lst prize, and a large chocolate rabbit as 2nd prize. was an extra activity of our class during this year in order to raise more funds for the treasury, On April 28, 1950, we received the tradition- al telegram from the seniors on their annual visit to Washington DC, which reminded us of this great time to come the following year. Sponsoring the lunior Prom, May 12, was probably the proudest and happiest moment of our junior year, as this was the first time a lunior Prom was held in the school since 1947. Music by George Singer and his orchestra, dim lights, evening gowns, and beautiful decora- tions comprised a setting which we shall never forget. Then came the year that everyone was wait- ing for, September, 1950, when we became Sophisticated Seniors. We are proud to say that we again chose Darrell Koch as President: Wendell Oswald, as Vice President: janet Moyer, as Secretary: and Richard Bowen, as Treasurer. Mr. Young was again our Class Adviser with Miss Hoy and Mr. Imboden assisting in guiding us through this last year. In In sports, our football team, well repre- sented by our senior boys, and led by Robert Shaup and Darrell Koch, went beyond our highest expectations, losing only one game. Defeating Minersville for the first time in the history of the school was the most outstanding event of this season. Our seniors also con- tributed to the success of the 1950-51 basketball team, making it another successful year for the Haven Hurricanes. Other activities in which members of our class were active were: Student Council, Hav- en Fax staff, Mixed and Girls' Choruses, Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y, Band, Orchestra, Twirling Corps, Cheerleaders, Art Club, Library Club, G.A.A., Conservation Club, Baseball Team, and Blue and Gold staff. Our Senior Play, Tattletale, directed by Miss Rodgers and Mr. Young, was splendidly portrayed. Financially and entertainingly, this play proved a success. Our other activity dur- ing this year was the selling of Christmas cards, which also proved to be a financial success. Finally, the time had come for our great trip to Washington D.C.! This reminded us of the ending of our last few social activities together as a class and the rapid closing of our high school career. Then came the month of Iune, the busiest. but most enjoyable and exciting month of all our years at Haven High. Commencement, Class Night exercises, and a pageant took place in the auditorium. We, the class of 1951, have just passed one of the greatest milestones in our lives. From here we go out into the world, not as a class. but as individuals, to solve new problems and to take advantage of the opportunities which await us. Finishing the season with a record of eight wins, one tie and one loss, they proved themselves one of the great teams in the history of football at Schuylkill Haven High. The highlight of the season came at the second game. Before a jam- packed stadium of cheering specta- tors at Minersville High School the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes en- gaged the 'Battling lVliners of Minersville. When the smoke had cleared away, Schuylkill Haven was on the high end of a 7-0 score, and for the first time in history the Schuylkill Haven High Varsity had defeated Minersville. The remaining part of the season was anticlimactic after this great moment. Continuing their murderous onslaught they rolled over Wilson, Cass Township, Saint Clair, Mahan- oy Township, Frackville, Mahanoy City, and Shillington, with only Muhlenburg Township temporarily taking the wind out of their sails by holding them to a tie at Albright Stadium in Reading, Coach Stauffer will lose eleven varsity members by graduation, but he will also have ample reserves to carry on successfully next year. The boys graduating are: Darrell Koch, Robet Shaup, Wendell Oswald, Richard Sausser, Ronald Honicker, Leonard Kulikosky, Richard Bowen, Ronald Knoll, Frank Keith and Paul Mengle. A xx SA ' xx. The season started off auspiciously enough with the Hurricanes piling up a record of ten victories and no defeats before the fans were hardly aware that the season had begun. During this time our high scoring machine had averaged better than seventy points a game. Then for the first time Fate put her hand into the picture. Qur old adversary, Pinegrove, proved to be too much for us. and for the first time we were on the losing end of the score. tThis game seemed to take much of the spirit out of our talented Hurricanes: however, they rallied sufficiently to finish second in the league.l A number of new league records were set by the Hur- ricanes this year. Among them were a new one game high score, lll points against Reilly, and a new record for the total number of points scored in one season. Coach Winton Evans loses four of his varsity players by graduation. They are: Bruce Croneberger, Bruce Freed, Darrell Koch, and Robert Shaup. To this deserted place came Elaine Blair, her lawyer-fiance, and her mother to look over the property which Elaine has inherited at her uncle's death. To their surprise they found the house in the possession of a suave and mysterious physician, Dr. Fersig, by name, his sinister housekeeper, and her deaf- mute son. The old house was worthless, but both Elaine and Dr. Fersig knew that a large sum of money was secreted somewhere on the premises. Thinking the visitors have left the island, and wanting to search for the money un- molested, Dr. Fersig directed the deaf-mute to blow up 73 the bridge, but to his chagrin they returned, having stopped at an old well on the island to eat a picnic supper. Because the bridge was destroyed, they decided to spend the night in the old house. Then things began to happen. Strange, ethereal noises were heard, a skeleton walked through the dim shadows of the house, Elaine suddenly disappeared, Bill, her fiance, made a strange discovery: and at the end came the big surprisewsomething the audience never anticipa- ted. The class was pledged not to divulge the secret before the night of production. There was scattered comedy, and the audience went away thrilled and de- lighted. fLeft Half of Topj Top row: Richard Sausser, Charles Darrell Koch, Elaine Potts, Bruce Croneberger, Richard Sausser. Then came the days of sophistication: Being seniors was no vacation. As sophomores always do, We had a crystal ball dance, too. For many years, no junior prom But, leave it to us-we had one. The Yearbook and the Fax staff: Our senior play was quite a laugh. Our Washington trip will never get hazy, What fun! We drove everybody crazy. And now, graduation. Our fun is o'er, We reached the goal we've been striving for. Our happy years are over, alas, Qnly to be remembered by the '51 Class. -SHIRLEY MINNICH Class Song Lyrics written to the tune of Our Very Own A Thru our years at school we have worked and tried To bring honor and fame to your glorious name. Although our efforts may have seemed so small at times, We'll always think of you in all we say and do. Life brings everything, both the smiles and tears. And you have taught us well how to live and try. For nothing good will ever die and this we learned from you, Our Alma Mater, HAVEN HIGH. Haven, thru the years we will cling to you, And cherish memories that we hold of you, For we must strive to make this world a happy place For each and every race upon this earth of ours. Now we feel so blue that we're leaving you: Our problems may seem few but we'll see them thru. May God help us in later years to aim for Higher goals. So thanks to you, our Haven High.
