TONTOQUONIAN SAUGUS HIGH SCHOOL Saugus, Massachusetts 2 3 FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES 6 EDITOR IN CHIEF . . . Paul Buehrens ASSOCIATE EDITORS . . . Faye Lcvine Mark Perry Delia Pi zotti Jane Tewksbury 7 ERWIN A. GALLAGHER SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS TO THE MEMBERS OE THE CLASS OE 1970: As seniors, you are about to leave Saugus High School and proceed to other goals. Eor some of you this means continued study at an institution of higher learning. Eor others, it means that you will seek immediate em- ployment. Whether your path leads you one way or the other, I believe that each of you will exemplify the ideals that will demonstrate the worth and dignity of each person that you come to know and that you will respect the worthiness of his contribution to your life. Never has a group of young men and women had an opportunity to be as well prepared for your new roles as you have. You have shown that you are interested in the problems of our community and society and .ire willing to commit yourselves to their solution. With adequate direction to supplement your own motivation, you can do much to promote an era of social change. May I then extend to you my congratulations for your achievements here at Saugus High School? Whether they have been educational, musical, or athletic is not as relevant as whether you have made a contribution to your school and community. BEST WISHES. Erwin A. Gallagher November 18, 1969 8 Dear Graduates, The time has arrived once again when Saugus High School increases the rank of its alumni by adding the class of 1969 to the roster. It is always the concern of the staff and administration of a com- prehensive secondary school as to how well they prepared each member of the graduating class. In these days of change, protest and revolt there is an added responsibility in the area of citizenship which must be considered. It is my hope that we have given some constructive directives toward the influence of good judgment. I feel that communication is an important factor in any change or protest. I point out the dictionary definition of these three words for your consideration. A change is to alter by substituting something else for. A protest is a formal objection as in writing against some act, proceeding or condition. A revolt is to renounce allegiance. After meditating on these three definitions it is obvious that the change and protest approach invokes communication whereas the re- volt eliminates communication. As societal beings we should resort to an avenue of communication in all our dealings. If we all use this philosophy progress and growth are inevitable. I wish each and every graduate every success and happiness that can be yours. Robert J. I ' raser Principal ROBERT J. FRASER PRINCIPAL ROBERT J. The party was held in the multi- purpose room, which was decorated for the occasion. Under the Christmas tree were 300 wrapped Christmas gifts. Santa Claus, as- sisted by three clowns, gave out the gifts. Following this were games and refreshments. The party was sponsored by the sociology-psy- chology classes. | I 11 III 114 ROW 1: Richard Dresios, William Mabee, John Pescatore, William Duplisea, Roben Tilley, Vernon Spinosa, Michael Annesee, Daniel Heaney, Thomas Smith, Lloyd Kusch, Richard Orfice, Walter Elsmore, Michael Veader, Frank Gagliardi, John McBride, Gregory Manship, Richard Hansen. This marked the second time in 19 years that a Saugus football team won 7 games. The team ' s only two losses were to Class A champion Pea- body and Class B champion Swampscott. There were many outstanding players for the Sachems and this was shown by the seven Sachems who were chosen on the Northeastern Conference All Stars. Bob Osgood and Bill Eichd made the first offensive team, while Steve Nelson was chosen for the first defensive team. Honorable mention awards were given to Rich Desisto, Bill Babcock, Rich Conti, and John Richard. 121 123 Beverly Gloucester Stoneham Swampscott Amesbury Marblehead Danvers Newbury port Winthrop Gloucester Swampscott Amesbury Marblehead Danvers Newbury port Winthrop SCORES 32 Saugus 54 Saugus 66 Saugus 58 Saugus 39 Saugus 75 Saugus 68 Saugus 62 Saugus 73 Saugus 43 Saugus Saugus Saugus Saugus Saugus Saugus Saugus 62 73 58 73 72 67 JUNIOR VARSITY James Canning. Although the team had only an average record (6-10), it came out on several occasions to up- set higher ranking teams. The Sachem hoopsters were one of few teams to topple favored Newburyport and Marblehead on their courts, and the Saugus quintet nearly overturned pow- erful Swampscott twice. The high scoring of Bob Osgood (12.4 ppg) and Bob Bashford (10.9 ppg) and the tenacious defensive play of John Richard, gave the Sachems a thrilling combination which often sur- prised their opponents. 127 ROW 1: William Babcock, Robert Tilley, George Lasquade, Daniel Heaney, Michael O ' Hearn, Henry Merrifield. The first line, comprised of George Lasquade, who set the individual assist record for a season, and Dan Heaney and Bob Tilley, established an all-time league record for most assists in a season. Mike O ' Hearn, voted the League ' s best defenseman, along with defense partner Bill Babcock and goalie Bud Merrifield, provided Saugus with the best defense in the Conference. 129 130 1 |Kj a • ■ROW 1: George Farnham, Lloyd Kusch. Co-captains Frank Clapp and Dave LeBlanc, leaders all year long, showed their talent by out-running everyone in their last three meets: and, in the most thrilling race of the year, both shattered the course record at Winthrop. 134 136 The Girls ' field hockey team displayed spirit and determination during their very successful season. With their all out effort and skills, the varsity brought home a winning season of 5 wins, 3 ties and 2 losses. The junior varsity record was 5 wins, 4 ties and 1 loss.
