BAND The Saugus High School Senior Band, by far one of the most colorful and top contenders for musical and marching ability, has turned in another good year in musical entertainment both on the football field and during the Concert Season. This year ' s band participated in some outstanding events at which they received top honors and acclaim. Such events were the appearance of the Boston University High School Day Game at Boston ' s Fenway Park; the appearance of the newly formed Boys ' Dance Orchestra and the Girls ' Orchestra at the school dances and events; the honor and privilege to be chosen to present a Concert at the Hall of Flags at the State House, Boston on Good Government Day ; the 16th Annual Band Concert at the Lynn City Hall which attracted music lovers from the greater North Shore; and the Northeastern Music Festival at Everett, Mass. It is Mr. Mitchell ' s belief that the training received by the pupils in any of the musical units will prove invaluable to them in later years. I 52] First Bow: London. For some of the other events of the year, the girls solicited ads for the Focus and Tontoquonian and candy for the Senior Play, sold cards, and planned an outing at the end of the year. The purpose ol this club is to give the girls practical business experience, to encourage social spirit, to enable them to have social contact, and to become more intimately acquainted with the business world. Revere scored the first touchdown on some good passing but couldn ' t hold the lead as Horman and Gostey combined to get the tying tally. In the second period two passes to Bob Meagher from Tony Serino gave Saugus six more points. Late in the game Anderson grabbed a Revere fumble and ran 72 yards for a score. The final score came when Bud Murphy blocked a Revere punt, picked it up an d stepped over the goal line. The Sachems put on a good showing and everyone hoped for a successful season. CAMBRIDGE LATIN The Saugus boys came up with their second win over Cambridge Latin, a new opponent. Again the opposing team scored first on a long run. They got the extra point on a pass. After being forced back to their goal, Latin punted but it was a poor kick. Chuck Healy recovered it and stepped over for a score. Latin ' s poor punting helped the Sachems again when Murphy recovered one on the opponents ' one-yard line. Serino went over for the score. Saugus ' third T.D. was scored by Horman after a good run by Serino. The Sachems scored two more points on a safety in the third period. The final score was by Cambridge in the last period. CLASSICAL The Sachems won their third straight game from powerful Lynn Classical. Serino scored first for Saugus after a long drive from deep in Saugus territory. It was Serino who bulled over from the one for the second Sachems ' score after an 80 yard march. Ed Mclntire got the third score for the Sachems when he intercepted a Classical pass and stepped over from the two. The closest Classical got to pay dirt against the Sachems ' line was to the twenty-five yard stripe of Saugus. MARBLEHEAD Marblehead whipped Saugus for their first loss of the season and first loss in eleven games. Marblehead scored in the first period but the Saugus line soon drove them back to the goal line where they were forced to punt. Ed Mclntire recovered in the end zone for the Sachems ' only T.D. The Sachems passed for the extra point. In the third period, Martin, the Headers halfback ran 80 yards for a score. Shortly after Martin ran 85 yards for his second T.D. The Saugus line stood out in this rame but the backs didn ' t set a chance to do too much. BROOKLINE The Sachems were held scoreless for the first time this season by the powerful Brookline team. The closest Brookline could come to the Saugus goal was to the ten but the Sachems did no better as they only reached the Brookline sixteen. Saugus used spread and pass plays along with their hard running but just couldn ' t cross up the Brookline team. It was a clean hard game from the starting whistle. [67] CQ-CAPTAIN5 SERiNO MURp Hy WlTTREDGE - ENGLISH The Sachems failed to score for the second straight game against Lynn English. English scored in the second period after some good running by Art Boland. They scored again in the third period on a one yard buck. Saugus gained more distance both on the ground and in the air but couldn ' t get any points. CHELSEA The Sachems were held scoreless for the third consecutive time against Chelsea High. The Saugus line stopped the Red Devils from moving but Chelsea stopped the Sachems ' attack also. Saugus was in scoring position four times but couldn ' t get any points. Whittredge was the Saugus standout in the game. Again Saugus out-ran and out-passed their opponents. SWAMPSCOTT The Sachems finally broke into the win column after four games. They broke loose in the second period for three touchdowns. Serino scored the first on a run but the extra point try failed. A Dudman to White pass netted the second Sachem ' s score. Another Dudman pass, this time to Meagher got the third touchdown of the period. Anderson converted for one point. Meagher scored again in the third period when he intercepted a Swampscott pass and ran 25 yards for a score. Murphy and Healey played well for the Saugus front line. SALEM The Sachems played their third scoreless tie of the season. It was a clean and hard game. The game was held at midfield until the third period when a Salem pass almost lost the game for Saugus. Chick Horman pulled the end down from behind to save the day. Salem again threatened in the last period when they reached the Sachem ' s one but the strong line held and the game was saved. PEABODY Serino scored the first touchdown for the Sachems early in the first period. In the second period the Sachems ' terrific guard, Murphy, tore through the Peabody line and blocked a punt on the Tanners ' goal line. Attempting to catch the blocked kick the ball got away from Murphy and bounced out of the end zone for a safety and two points for the Sachems. Again in the second period the Saugus guard, Murphy, scored a point when he split the uprights with a perfect place-kick for the point-after touchdown scored by Horman. Sparked by seniors Tony Serino, Chick Horman and Charlie Murphy the Saugus Sachems ended their season with a 15-0 victory over the Peabody Tanners. BASKETBALL The season opened with Ryan, center; Joe Piwowarski and Nate Diamond, forwards; and Dudman and White, guards. In the first game Maiden Catholic won, 48-30. After a week ' s practice, the team defeated Johnson High of Andover by a score of 40-38. Two successive victories followed over a tall Swampscott team and a fast and clever Newburyport Club. The scores, as the final whistle blew, were 47-42 against Swampscott and 53-41 in an upset over Newburyport. With a record of 3-1, new confidence enabled the team to take the faculty. Mr. Watson, Mr. McKay and Coach Janusas were the high scorers for the faculty; Everett Ryan came through with twelve points for the school club. Over-confidence finally beset the team. Johnson High administered one defeat, although the team did win by one point from Newburyport. The next two games against Punchard and Peabody were lost, the final scores being 58-49 when Punchard won and 49-47 when Peabody took the game. Methuen also administered a wallop- ping 54-29 and just beat Saugus on its home court by 4 points. In the Maiden Small School Tourney, Saugus High played a tall rangey club from Woburn and after building up a four point lead in the first half lo:,t by five points. Belden Bly entered the team in the Gold Medal Tournament at Lynn and the Ely Juniors polished off Lynn Classical and Lynn English to reach the finals against the Panhellenics and were swamped by an overpowering club of ex-high school talent 89-39. Dick Eastman was elected captain for this year. In the second game, Bob DeLouis, a newcomer from Melro;e, helped the Sachems on its way to a successful season. He made the lone Sachem score as we tied Beverly, 1-1. Walt Weymouth did a terrific job as goalie. Saugus took a white-washing from the Donavan-Alexuk-Grayton combination. The Sachems failed to score, whereas Tcabody racked up three points. Saugus de- feated Danvers 2-1 in an unusual skating act. Bourque scored, assisted by DeLouis. Then Bob scored, unassisted. Gene Hunt, a sophomore, did a marvelous job in his debut as goalie. Although Saugus gave Amesbury a terrific battle, the Pow Wow boys won out, 3-2. The Sachems ' Bourque and DeLouis scored the goals, but this still left us one goal behind. Another tie was credited to Saugus ' record. It was a terrific game, but the boys couldn ' t seem to score the winning point over second place Gloucester. Bourque scored, assisted by Matt; Emmett scored unassisted. Nicholson has had to leave the team for the rest of the season, but Matt has done a fine job. Another tie, with goals scored by DeLouis, Bourque and Matt was with Salem. The Sachems finally managed to hit the win column again. Reliable Bourque scored once, with Tom Meagher racking up two goals to do the job up right. Saugus really upset Classical by beating them 3-1. Bourque was the star as he scored all three goals. English was in top shape to meet Saugus as they beat us 4-2. Bourque and DeLouis scored the goals. Saugus went down to Revere, 5-2. Tom Meagher scored both goal:, assisted by Emmett. [ 75 ] IDENTIFICATION FOR PICTURES OF UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS (Page 38) First Row: DaFrance, Kelley, Layden, Walkey, Hood, Holmes.
