NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Sachem Chapter of the National Honor Society elected Patricia Rockhill, President; Barbara Rice, Vice-President; Joan Quinn, Secretary; and Robert Chiabrandy, Treasurer. The membership of the organization is based on service, character, scholarship, and leadership. All of these qualifications must be fulfilled before a pupil can become a member of this organization. The club ' s annual football dance in September enabled the Chapter to purchase a one hundred dollar War Bond for the organization ' s Scholarship Fund. At Christmas time a donation was given to a needy family. Other acts of service were the continuation s of the policy of congratulating the Honor and Credit Students each term in the school ' s daily bulletins, and having an Honor and Credit Roll in each issue of the Focus. The initiation of new members was held at a school assembly on April 4, 1949. The members initiated were these: Seniors: Ruth Brooks, Kenneth Littlefield, Norma LaViska, Donald Junkins, Marian Gray, Jeanette Greenleaf, Barbara Welch, Marilyn Sewell, Nancy Cousens, Roger Howland, Jeanne Pothier, Sebastian Pedi, Roderick Myers, Richard Jackson; Sophomores: Norma Taylor and Allan Price. GIRLS ' CLUB CABINET The Girls ' Club officially opened its social year with a very impressive installation ceremony, marking the club ' s twelfth anniversary. Marilyn Vient, past president, was the installing officer. The officers elected for the year 1948-1949 were: Virginia Brostrom, President; Lorraine Bragg, Vice-President; Virginia Decareau, Secretary; and Jacqueline Metcalf, Treasurer. The chairmen of the standing committees were: Cynthia Haley, Social; Carol Popp, Ways and Means; Joan Rice, Service; Marilyn Holmes, Program; and Barbara Cassey, Membership. The Girl ' s Club Dance in December was a success, both financially and socially. The Christmas Assembly was colorful as well as entertaining, featuring the Girls ' Choir and a short play. Especially interesting were the programs in which Mrs. Mary Carr Baker spoke to the girls on etiquette, and Mr. Tarjan on correct grooming. A community sing under the direction of Miss Grillo, and a talent program featuring Marilyn Holmes, as Arthur Godfrey, was enjoyed by all. A circus came to Saugus High School in April, a program that will long be remembered for its cleverness and humor. Our season was brought to a close with the election of officers and the reception given by the Junior girls to the incoming Freshmen. — 51 STUDENT COUNCIL Seated: Wes ' .c-ndarp, Popp, O ' Neil, Agersea, Quinlan, Hennigar, LaViska, Allen. The Sachems, however, did not have a very successful season as they won three and lost eight of the eleven games they played. Salem, with a big line and a fast backfield was one touchdown better as Saugus lost their first game of the season 20 to 12. Early in the first quarter Salem scored from the ten yard line. Two plays later the Sachems tied the score on a pass from Nicolo to Neale. Salem scored again as the half ended. In the third period Quinlan went over from the 8 to climax and 80 yard drive. This made the score Salem 13 Saugus 12. Salem sewed up the game in the final period as they scored seven more points. Saugus lost a close one as Brookline beat them 7-6 in the second game of the season. The game was scoreless in the first three periods with the Sachems moving toward the Brookline goal as the third period ended. A pass from Dick Nicolo to Ken Neale gave Saugus the ball on the Brookline 20 as the fourth quarter started. The Nicolos and Forti carried the ball to the one and Bluntscored on a quarterback sneak. Penda was the big man in the Brookline drive as he scored the touchdown and kicked the game winning point. Saugus was outclassed by Beverly as they lost 20 to 6. On the second play of the game Ransome ran 71 yards to score for Beverly. He scored again on a 24 yard run. The third Beverly touchdown came on a 45 yard run. Beverly made two out of three conversions. Saugus scored on a 19 yard pass from Dick Nicolo to Ted Fredericks. Saugus put a great fight as they lost to Classical 6-0. In the first half Saugus put on an 85 yard drive but was stopped on the Rams 8. During the third period the Sachems went 28 yards to the Classical 16. Cheever intercepted a Saugus pass to start the Rams on their touchdown drive. He scored for Classical on a 26 yard run. The Sachems took the kickoff and came right back but the game ended as they had the ball on the Classical 9 yard line. The Sachems lost to Amesbury 27-13, but later were awarded the game as Amesburv had used an ineligible player. The first Amesbury score came on a 20 yard pass in the first quarter. Saugus scored late in the same period as Forti went off tackle and went ahead in the next quarter on a pass — Nicolo to Quinlan. Just before the half ended, Amesbury scored on a pass, and again in the third period on an intercepted pass. The final Amesbury touchdown was the result of a blocked punt. Chelsea swamped the Sachems 25 to 6 as they scored twice in the second period. On the fifth play of the second half Chelsea scored again. Chelsea scored their last touch- down in the last period on a 62 yard drive. The only Saugus touchdown came when the Sachems received a punt on the Chelsea 35 and led by Lester DeMaci they went over the Chelsea goal. Recovering a Saugus fumble late in the third quarter, English converted it into a touchdown by scoring on the first play of the fourth period. Lou Siropoulous scored all seven of English ' s points by taking a six yard pass for the T. D. and place kicking the point after. The game was hard fought as English came out on top 7 to 0. 61 ' FIELD 48-49 sr-rerDAcK. Three plays later the Sachems scored on a Nicolo to Neale pass which made the score 13-0 at halftime. Don Junkins intercepted a pass and dashed over for the final score of the day. Saugus won their second game as they whipped Swampscott 14 to 0. Frank Forti was the star of the day as he tore the Sculpin line to shreds. The only offensive gesture by Swampscott was a 50 yard run by Rawding. Marblehead nosed out Saugus in a thrill packed game 19-13. With Saugus leading 13 to 12 and less than a minute to play, Marblehead scored on a long pass and won 19-13. The Magicans opened the scoring but Saugus fought back and went ahead 13-6. Marble- head scored another touchdown but couldn ' t get the point after and the Sachems led 13-12 until the last minute of play when Marblehead scored their third touchdown. The Saugus Sachems rode to victory Thanksgiving morning on the arm of Sardi Nicolo, who passed to three touchdowns and scored another. The first Saugus was set up by a pass to Woodell on the Peabody 1. Sardi Nicolo bucked over from this point. The next two Saugus touchdowns were scored by Ken Neale on passes from Nicolo. The last Saugus touchdown occurred when Nicolo passed to Quinlan in the end zone. Pea- body scored first on a long pass and then on a sustained drive against the Sachem reserves. Rod Myers ' 49 63 — Seated: Driscoll, Gulliiord, Neal, Blunt, Nadeau. Second Row: Stevens, Holt, Littlefield, Hennigar, Tilley, Coach Scarborough. Third Row: Ahlquist, York, Spence. BASKETBALL 1949 The basketball team had a fair season as they won two league games and defeated the Alumni. Their Northeastern Conference record was two wins and ten losses. Over the last seven games they were never beaten by more than six points. In their first game of the season the Sachems weren ' t too impressive as they were defeated by Amesbury 61-36. The second game showed that the team had improved as they were nosed out by Newburyport 38 to 29. Jim Blunt scored 11 points for Saugus in this game. The Sachems were still looking for their first win as they lost the third game to Swampscott 45-31. After going along nicely in the two previous games the Indians were scalped by Marblehead by a score of 65 to 31. Ken Neale sank 13 points for the Sachems. Saugus was back in its old form as they were edged by Winthrop 41-29. Saugus won its first game of the season by defeating Danvers 33 to 25 in a game that was played in Boston Garden. Ken Gulliford was the high scorer with 10 points. The Sachems won their second game of the season as they defeated Amesbury 35-31. Blunt and Gulliford racked up 13 and 10 points respectively. In their next game Saugus was beaten by Swampscott in a game that required two overtime periods. The score stood 28-28 at the end of four periods of play. Each team scored once in a three minute over- time period. In sudden death overtime Robinson scored for Swampscott to make the final score Swampscott 32 Saugus 30. After such a good showing the Sachems lost their last four games of the season to Newburyport 38-32; Marblehead 39-33; Danvers 34-29; and Winthrop 38-36. All of these games were very close but the Sachems just couldn ' t pull out a win. 66 — BmSmmm P5 l Seated: Waldrip, Quirk, C. Prentice, Hussey, J. Prentice, Howland, Popp. Second Row: Han- son, Green, Junkins, Esposito, Parrott, McCullough, Deveau, Coach Janusas. Third Row: Emmett, Ralphs, Davis, Archibald, Grella. HOCKEY TEAM Saugus High School has a fine hockey record to boast of, for though the North Shore League has been in existence only three years, Saugus has produced two champions — two years running. Marking the first time that hockey games had ever been played on artificial ice in Essex County, Saugus High defeated Salem, 3-1 ; Jack Prentice got two goals while Esposito got the other Saugus tally. In the second game, Saugus again appeared victorious , this time defeating Revere 4-2. Stan Popp scored first and then Charlie Prentice got one followed by brother Jackie ' s two goals. Saugus next proceeded to beat Marblehead, 3-1; Jackie Prentice scoring 2 with Charlie taking one. Saugus lost its only game of the season to Peabody 2-1 ; although Saugus outshot the Tanners by a wide margin, Jack Prentice was the only Sachem to sink one. Saugus bounced back from this defeat by trouncing Swampscott, 6-2 ; Sachem goals were scored by Red Parrott, 2 ; Charlie Prentice 2 ; and Jack Prentice and Bob Grella each scored one. Saugus rose to its greatest heights when it thoroughly defeated the league leaders, Gloucester, 5-1. Hussey played well in the nets though the scoring was strictly a Prentice affair, Charlie netted two and Jackie three. In the St. John ' s game, Saugus, after falling behind 2-1 as St. John ' s scored two goals, came up with three goals in the final frame to register its impressive win. Goals were by Charlie Prentice, who scored two, and Parrott and Jack Prentice, one each. Beverly went down before the famed Prentice combine ' s markmanship as Charlie and Jack both got two goals for a 4-1 victory. In the final game, Saugus won the championship by overpowering Danvers 6-0. Goals were registered by Jackie, Charlie Prentice, and Roger Howland, all of whom garnered two. 69 PERSONALIZED PORTRAITS and it ' s all done with LIGHTS!
