The conference was an intro- duction to the tasks and complicated proce- dures of developing a yearbook and an inspirational beginning to a full year's project. Throughout the summer and first few weeks of school, the editors searched for a fitting theme. Then the real work of presenting the SAWYER as a kaleidoscope began. Backed by indispensa- ble advice and instruction from Mrs. Bailey, the SAWYER chiefs capably directed the staffs efforts in cropping countless pictures, creating artistic lay-outs, and writing innumerable head- ings and captions. The staff endeavored espe- cially to create an excitingly different SAWYER for 1969. TOP RIGHT: Mrs. Frances Bailey, SAWYER advisor. A virtual potpourri oftopics was included from sports activities to original poetry. Probing editorials and a special section of Letters to the Editor questioned school policies and criticized student attitudes. On issues that couldn't be solved by individuals alone, the Blueslozic staff sought to bring these problems to the attention ol' the entire student body. 27 Complex Patterns of Thought Molded Into Distinct Ideus . The innovation of party conventions in September launched the Senior Student Council into an active year and revived fading interest in this body of government. Homerooms became states and assumed the names of their teachers, while the student body was divided into a Blue party and a White party. Delegates were sent to an initial meeting, where a chairman and a secretary for each party were chosen, and platforms were decided on. Genuine excitement prevailed at the party nominations for officers. Then followed rousing campaigns, debates, and, finally, the voting in a booth. For the first time, enough enthusiasm was generated to put a write-in candidate in ofiice. During the year, the main issue concerning student council was liberalization of the dress code. Other projects included collecting money for the people in Biafra, trying to establish a year-round student lounge, and the idea ofinstalling a coke machine and a juke box in the cafeteria. Junior and Senior Leuclers, Clubs During the 1968499 school year, the Senior Leaders assisted in gym classes, intramurals, and with the Saugerties Biddy League Basket- ball. During the fall and winter, the girls sold concessions at the lootballigames and in Decem- ber sponsored the annual Girl-ask-Boy Dance, one ofthe most successful events of the year. Developing leadership in Junior High School girls was the goal ofthe Junior Leaders' Club. The election of officers and initiation of new members began their exciting year. Throughout the year, they improved their own skills and those of their classmates by assisting in gym classes and intramural programs. Proceeds from the bake sale, a car wash, and the dance, Hap- pening '69, enabled the members to enjoy a day in New York City. .lunior Leaders 7 Club Front row: P. Wrolsen, A. Rea, P. Wrolsen, G. Karl Sjursen and Frank Varone rounded out the team. Coach Welton was pleased with the year's progress and expects a much more experienced and improved team in 1969. Much of this improvement depends upon Carl Ferrono, a Freshman who scored and played well with the seniors on the '68 team. Considering the 68-69 winning spirit at S.H.S., the tennis outlook is optimistic. mrs SCORES S.H.S. Baseball: Sawyers End Season W ith 500 Record The '67-'68 baseball team had a medicore season ending in eight wins, nine losses and one tie. They started the season with only a handful of returning lettermen. With a definite pitching problem, the fighting Sawyers had to rely on fine fielding and hitting to win games against the stronger teams of the larger schools in the D.C.S.L. Led by senior co-captains Barry Lindsey and Vince Buono, the Sawyers compiled a .500 league record. The team played well together as a unit on the held. Outstanding individual performances were recognized by the D.C.S.L. coaches who picked two Sawyers as all-league selections, Jeff Leone and Bill Perks. VARSITY BASEBALL SCORES S.H.S. The lack of depth was the main problem, as each team member was bur- dened with the task of competing in two or three events in each meet. Outstanding performances were turned in by Bill Benham, who broke his own S.H.S. record in the pole vault at 11 ft., and Roger Praetorius, who tied the S.H.S. record in the low hurdles of 21.3, set in 1962. Jim Gilbane came within one second of the S.H.S. 2 mile record while Rex Kiniry narrowly missed the S.H.S. 880 record. The Fighting Sawyers of '68-'69, backed by enthusiastic crowds and pushed by the coaches' determination, powered their way to a second place finish in the tough DCSL. The Sawyers' key to victory was teamwork, shown by a balanced and potent offense and the best defense in the league. Co-Captains Roger Praetorius and Tom Zeigler were among the outstanding seniors along with Tom Christiana, Tom Myers, Larry Andreassen, Mike Turek, and Tom Eme- rick. Junior starters with much promise were backs Holly Carnright and Mark Ishkanian, and lineman Ray An- dreassen and John Carnright. Tom Zeigler and Tom Chris- tiana were all-DCSL selections at guard and tackle, respectively, while Roger Praetorius was all-DCSL as both fullback and linebacker. Considering the caliber ofthe Saug- erties underclassmen and the excellent coaches, Seither and Kramer, the Sawyers should maintain their record next fall. Diverse Intramural Program Throughout the school year, in- tramurals were an added dimen- sion to the activities of both junior and senior high boys, as well as girls. Flag football was played in the junior high on an honor system, using no ofhcials for the matches. Also, in the junior high, boys and girls competed in a cross-country program on a homeroom basis. Several new programs were in- troduced this year on the intramu- ral level. The Polar Bear Club involvedjunior high boys who par- ticipated in outdoor running and, in the senior high, a co-ed gymnas- tics club was formed to encourage skills on the apparatus and in tum- bling. During the appropriate seasons tournaments were held, both be- tween teams in this school and with other school teams, in the usual intramural sports . . . soccer, field hockey, basketball, softball and track and field for both boys and girls. Senior Class Saugerties High Schools first graduating class to surpass two hundred in number, the Class of '69, initiated several changes and definitely secured valuable achievements throughout its career. As the first freshman class to study in the new junior high building, the Class of '69 established the practice of modeling class elections to govern- ment elections through lively, enthusiastic campaigns and use of a voting machine. Sophomore year brought another nrst-the sch0ol's first battle of the bands, The Jig's Up. Thoughts about graduating and entering college began to concern the class, as class rings appeared in the junior year. The Junior Prom, Chez Paris , presented by the Class of '69 was one of Saugerties High School's most beautiful balls. Couples danced from sidewalk cafes into the streets of Paris and through Parisian gardens. The Class of '69 marked the beginning ofits senior year by raising a record amount in magazine sales. Top salesmen in the class enjoyed a day in New York City with a Japanese dinner and the Broadway musical Mame. College applications were submit- ted in the fallg plans for the next year were being discussed by everyone. Senior portraits arrived in time for Christmas, to be given as gifts and to exchange with friends. Orders for graduation announcements and measurements for caps and gowns seemed to bring graduation very near. The Senior Play, Mr. Hobbs' Vacation was successfully presented in March through the fine efforts and co-operation of its Cast and crew. Senior Week-end arrived with excitement and anxiety. The Senior Ball, Blue Moon , climaxed the class' activities. Then, with the excitement of accomplishment and the tears of sorrow and gladness, the Class of '69 was graduated, proudly leaving its mark at S.H.S. 85. Presented by the Class of 969 The hilarious adventures of the Hobbs' Family at their dilapidated cottage in Rock Harbor provided the entertaining action for the senior class' three-act play. As though domestic problems at Gray Gables were- n't enough, Mr. Hobbs, played by Ed Bor- gen, was drawn by his wife, played by Clairan Ferrono, into contact with the New England natives with disastrous results. Preceding the two-night engagement in the S.H.S. auditorium Mr. Fyhr once again took his senior dramatic east to Hudson to perform for the students of the Hudson River State School, where they gave a pre- view presentation. Emotions The kaleidoscope is open to its fullest at com- mencement. Soon it will close as their activities as a class end, but the seniors find consolation in the fact that the kaleidoscope will open again with excit- ing, if different patterns in the future. Determination and a touch of sadness: their final day as a class Q -mf' -mi. -1 Af srl 5 t Reflections and I inagesg Life at Saugerties High School was a kaleidoscope experience which prepared us to accept our changing roles as responsible adults. We learned to face and to appreciate the challenge and beauty in the changing patterns of life which we encounter. Through participation in the various facets of high school activity, we assimilated exciting impressions and ideas. We accepted, and we rejected, we became confused. We explored friendships, studies, interests, we discovered ourselves and others. By altering the emphasis which we placed on the various aspects of our lives, we sought a pattern to which we could identify, one fulfulling our needs and aspirations. The kaleidoscope we possessed in high school will become an instrument to view the world after graduation. We must not allow the world's rapid pace to frighten and confuse usg we must steer the world on its new path. Initiating change willibe as necessary as its realizationf In the future, we will have the power to discover, to invent, and to build. l , After leaving Saugerties High, we must view the kaleidoscope of life and seek a pattern to which we can identify once again. Today is mine, each shining golden hour: In heart and hand and minaf I hold the power To mould in new design, in patterns gay, The beauty I shall fnd along the way. -Anonymous ,.,,,,, 'nzesw .. 1 t iilwm Uiklllflgmmf flu' if 1 as :MHZ ll CMS X.
