'Our first activity was to elect class officers. upon which much of the work and respon- sibility of the Junior Class would fall. Soon we were measur- ed for our class rings. at which time we decided to change the style to a more elaborate setting. Next on the agenda came the annual magazine sales. which. after a slow start. proved to be quite successful. After mid-terms. work was be- gun in preparation for our play which we presented to the high school assembly. The last two months of the school year were busy ones indeed. At the picnic. the profits which we realized in the magazine sales were put to good use as the Juniors treated the Seniors to a day of swimming and eating at Lake Taghanic. Closing the school year. we took part in the Class Night ceremonies on June 25. when we presented the Seniors with small gifts. We. the class of 1957. wish to thank our class officers. our advisors. and the many other willing and able individu- als who helped to make this an enjoyable and memorable year. Last year. as Freshmen. most of us were new to the school. and the surroundings and acti-.ities were. at first. strange and unfamiliar. This year. however. we participat- ed in athletics. various clulms. and other activities includ- ing the choir and orchestra. From the academic point of view. we did quite well. also. for we placed a nunilver of DUI' class on the school honor roll. Seventh rade This year we took a big step and had a hig change. liecause of the new centralization program. all of the seventh grade students ironi area schools are going to S.H.S. This has caused a great increase in the number of students and has brought about double sessions for us. Wie also took on the added responsibilities oi chang- ing classes and acting like Junior High School pupils. Most of us have joined clubs. Wfe are allowed to at- tend school socials. to have a representative in the Esopus Council. and to elect a Christmas speaker. The chapter in Saugerties High School was established in 1921. The local National Honor Society was organized especially' in order to stimulate scholarship. Students of Saugerties High School who are members of the ,lunior Class are eligible for election during their sixth semes- ter as soon as all marks for the midyears are definitely' known. provided they have maintained for the last two- and one-half years an average of not less than i'lT.30'fJ. llatti. ,l. 'llhis year the Council continued the trend of secur- ing better and more varied performers. The president of the Esopus Council is in charge of meeting the Blanket Tax performers and assisting them to prepare for assembly. The president then announces these programs. 'llhrough the years. Saugerties High School has heen fortunate enough to have had a good council. Considering that the squad had only one year's experience at eleven-man football. the 6-2 record chalked up by the squad was a big accomplishment. Six-man football was completely abandoned this year and full emphasis was given to the eleven-man game by both coaches and play- ers. This year the team was greatly hindered by bad weather. The games were played under sub-par weather conditions. Out of the eight games on the S.l'l.S. sche- dule, five were played on wet muddy fields, and were often interrupted by rain. The captains of the 1955 squad were Jack Patterson and Don Whitaker. Jack. a senior this year, was blocking back in Coach Straub's split-T attack. Don was the talking captainu and made the decisions on the field for the team. 1955 FOOTBALL SCORES 13 SHS. 26 SHS. Liherty. and Woodstock were added to the schedule that formerly included Un- teora. lierhonkson. and Catskill. Wir. Cohle. who successfully completed two years as Junior Varsity coach. took over the coaching job for the team this year. fylany' hard hours of fundamentals and hasic hall handling are put in hy' the team lyelore the season gets under way. The boys are taught the finer points of the gaine so that they will he ahle to play' more skillfully' and also so that they' will he hetter prepared for their future years on the Varsity' team.
