Paper Making in Saugerties Paper making is valuable to our town as well as to the nation as a whole. All about us are evidences of the importance of this great industry: the books we read, the letters we write, and even the Sawyer itself. There are only two small mills in the Vnited States which coat colored paper-the Martin Cantine Company ot' Saugerties is o11e of them. This thriving' concern was formed in 1888 under the supervision of Martin Cantine and it has operated continually since its establishment. This company does not make paper but instead coats paper which has been produced elsewhere. Covers for Fanny Farmer candies, and jackets for the Doubleday book of the month are examples of its products. Indirectly the Cantine Mills ship to such foreign countries as India, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa. Originally there were only thirteen employees but now this concern offers employment to over three hundred of our townspeople. ' The two other paper concerns of our village are the F. L. Russell Company of Ulster Avenue, and the Saugerties Paper Mills Incorporated o11 the Esopus. The Russell Company rules and binds paper. Large quantities of their products can be seen in the various Newberry and VVoolworth stores throughout the United States. The Saugerties Paper Mills Inc. is the o11ly mill in Saugerties which ac- tually makes paper. This mill was formerly the Diamond Mills and its role in the life of Saugerties cannot be forgotten. Paper making is indeed an important industry. While walking down the streets of our village our townspeople feel assured and even proud as they see the smoke rising from the ever busy mills.
