Papyrus was used by the early Egyptians, the Babylonians used clay, but our world of today has paper which has proven to be a more durable and n1ore Convenient product. Our paper mills in Saugerties play a small but important part in this great indstry. Throughout this hook our artists have pictured various phases of the paper industry and have related them to some of our activities in school. Every bit of art work in this yearbook was done by S. ll. S. students. The Editors LOUISE lN1YERS Editor-in-Chief of the Sawyer DH. GRANT D. All about us are evidences of the importance of this great industry: the books we read, the letters we write, and even the Sawyer itself. There are only two small mills in the Vnited States which coat colored paper-the Martin Cantine Company ot' Saugerties is o11e of them. This thriving' concern was formed in 1888 under the supervision of Martin Cantine and it has operated continually since its establishment. This company does not make paper but instead coats paper which has been produced elsewhere. Covers for Fanny Farmer candies, and jackets for the Doubleday book of the month are examples of its products. Indirectly the Cantine Mills ship to such foreign countries as India, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa. Originally there were only thirteen employees but now this concern offers employment to over three hundred of our townspeople. ' The two other paper concerns of our village are the F. L. Russell Company of Ulster Avenue, and the Saugerties Paper Mills Incorporated o11 the Esopus. The Russell Company rules and binds paper. Large quantities of their products can be seen in the various Newberry and VVoolworth stores throughout the United States. The Saugerties Paper Mills Inc. is the o11ly mill in Saugerties which ac- tually makes paper. This mill was formerly the Diamond Mills and its role in the life of Saugerties cannot be forgotten. Paper making is indeed an important industry. While walking down the streets of our village our townspeople feel assured and even proud as they see the smoke rising from the ever busy mills. The Saugerties Paper Mills Inc., formerly the Diamond Mills Water Sports in Saugerties Both the upper and lower Esopus Creek and the Hudson River lend theinselves to tl1e sport of boating. It is not surprising' then that the people of Saugerties are boat-ininded. On a sunnner's day, it is possible to see the owners of rowboats, outboard niotorboats, and the more fortunate owners of power boats enjoying this satisfying' sport. lVhether it be a large powerboat or a row boat, their owners are equally proud to participate in a sport so well enjoyed in this connnunity. The Esopus Creek and the Hudson River are the favorite swinnning haunts of inany of our young' people. Both adults and children enjoy this sport. We are fortunate in having an excellent bathing beach within reach of all. All sunnner long, the happy shouts of swinnners echo across the waters of the creek and the river. Un a hot sunnner's day, both children and adults agree that there is nothing like a cooling dip in the Esopus Creek. The area in and surrounding' Saugerties is known the state over for its excellent fishing. Saugerties' sportsmen fish the year round. In the spring, the icy 1110l1lltalll springs give up flashing' brook trout. During' the sunnner, fishermen frequent the Esopus Creek for bass, pickerel, bullheads and sunfish. The Hudson River is famed for its shad and large catfish. lVhen winter colnes, lllirlllf' hardy sportsmen brave tl1e icy winds to fish through the ice for perch and pickerel. Music Notes from the Music Department of Saugerties High School The Music Department started the school year with one new teacher, Miss Christine Riedler, a graduate of the Crane Music School of Potsdam. Both Mr. Dilmore and Miss Schrum returned from the previous year. The Annual Christmas Concert was presented on Decen1ber 16th with the Orchestra, Choir, and Soloists. A candlelight pro- cessional started the program, and decorations of spruce, red bows, and candles added color to the occasion. This program was reviewed by the local newspaper as one of the best ever presented at S. H. S. A11 exchange assembly was presented by the Music Department for the students of Hudson High School in their auditorium on February 17th. Over eighty students made the trip in three busses to offer the program, which was well received by the Hudson students. The Dance Band played for the usual Friday evening parties and also played for two assembly programs on April 20th and May 4th, On February 10th the Dance Band was invited to play on tl1e Saugerties Hour over Radio Station VVKNY in Kingston. April 28th was tl1e date for the production of Strauss's 'tCl1oc- olate Soldier. The excellent performance of this humorous musical was played to a capacity crowd in the S. H. S. Auditorium. The Spring Concert and the Junior Spring Concert were com- bined this year and presented on May 19th. Decorations were in the spring tradition with a Maypole and flower boxes. Once again the Choir, Orchestra, and Soloists presented a fine program to a very appreciative audience. Two groups which cannot go Without mention are the Girl's Sextette and the Boy's Quartet. The girls were under the direction of Miss Riedler this year, and Miss Schrum directed the boys' group. These groups both performed for all of the concerts and sang for the P.T.A., as well as appearing on the Saugerties Hour at VVKNY. High School Orchestra l'ERSUNNlCI, L. The most remote spectator in the auditorium is closer to the scene of action. almost. than the nearest spectator is to the scene of action in a baseball game. There is plenty of chance for the develop- ment of skill in basketball-skill of an in- dividual nature and of a group nature, too. No matter how clever a player becomes it seems another player improves on his per- formance. Saugerties joins the world in its enjoyment of the game of basketball. The printed edition is issued quarterly: the mimeographed edition is issued weekly. In many respects the weekly Ulsterette is the most important publica- tion issued in the local school system. It is a working sheet which informs pupils and faculty of forthcoming events. It seldorn deals with the past. Pupils who work on the Flsterette. both the Quarterly Ulsterette and the ll'eelfly Ulsterette. have a Valuable e.rperience. Ten different editors each take the responsibility for one month 's edition of the weekly Ulsterette. The typists in the Commercial Department. under the direction of illrs. Heermance, hare done ercellent work in producing clear. attractizre, legible copies. Their work over the past few years has been a credit to tlzemselves, to lllrs. We, the graduating class are likewise beginning a new phase in our lives. Up until now we have been guided by the helping hands of our parents, the faculty of Saugerties High School, and the Board of Education. We face the future knowing that now we must help ourselves, but we have received such fine training from these people that our tasks have been lightened. On behalf of my fellow classmates, I thank those who have aided usg we know our experiences here will influence us in our future lives. Farewell, Saugerties High School. Salutatory BY BETTY MCGUIRE Tonight we, the Seniors of 1950 come to the end of our high school careers. We sit together as an undergraduate class for the last time. Tomorrow we shall step into the world, each to make his own way. We hold as an example for ourselves these great American men about whom our program centers tonight. You, the parents, friends, and teachers of the Seniors of 1950 are, in a sense, as much a part of this class as we are. for your tireless help and en- couragement have guided us over the rough places in life for many years. We thank you sincerely and welcome you to these commencement exercises, not merely as spectators, but also as honorary members of the Class of 1950 whose graduation you helped make possible. WRX .
