The simple beauty which artists have ,always recognized in stone makes it a dignified and appropriate art theme for this yearbook. Bluestone is especially suit- able as our theme since it is so closely connected with Saugerties' history. Ulster Bluestone, the literal founda- tion of our streets and buildings, is also part of the foundation of tl1e community in a wider sense. Bluestone in the past furnished a craft by which many Saugerties men lived. We revive the saga of these stonecutters in the following pages and ask you to join us in hewing out the events of the past year from tl1e quarry of S.H.S. life. THE EDITORS

Bluestone lYhen we walk along the streets of this town, up the steps of our library, or along our country roads, we see, almost without realiz- ing it, a product peeuliar to the eonnnunities of Ylster Pounty. The flagstone sidewalks in our business section, the lintels and window sills of our houses, and the eurbing of our streets have eonie from the heart of our hills. Great heaps of slag and water-filled quarry holes throughout this vicinity bear witness to this fact. At one time, the niiddle and late eighteen hundreds, these now-deserted quarries were thriving industries. Quarryville, Ulster Landing, Blue Mountain, Glaseo, and Hurley resounded to the blows of the stoneeutter's hannner. During the winter nionths, when the ground was frozen, the stripping Ca waste layer of earth and roekj was dug and blasted away. Wl101l the warin days of late spring and sunnner eanie, large lifts of fine-grained, blue tinted stone were split from their beds by means 'of wedges and niallets. Along our roads in those days one niight see the flat bottonied stone sledge, moving slowly toward the Saugerties stone dock, Glaseo or Ulster Landing with a load of stone for the dealers. This rough stone, purchased by eoinpanies maintaining buyers at all the local docks, was then transported to New York for flagging andeurb stone, or eut by skilled workers into house trinnning and building blocks. We feel that this industry of long ago was important enough to our town to warrant its being reealled i11 these pages. For this reason we use its history as a background for the features of the 1948 Sawyer.
