S Students Qlmserve Arbor lbay Arbor Day is always the occasion for a special ceremony in S.H.S. Our ivy-covered walls are the product of this time-honored cusfoni of planting' an annual Arbor Day shrub. There being' no more spaee for ivy around the building, .the Senior Class bas, for the past two years, turned its atlenlion to the park opposite our school. The Pennin Home Thomas Penning' is a unique artist. He has employed the Bluestone of this region in his sculptoring, in his home, and on his grounds. The Penning' home stands on a tract of la11d which formerly held an actively Worked Bluestone quarry. Built by local stone masons under Mr. Penning s direction, it is done entirely in Ulster BfZl1'.Qf0fl1I', quarried and cut by native craftsmen. One approaches the grounds along' a wooded road. A Bluestone terrace extends before the house, and on the left a flight of stairs mounts to the roof. These stairs arelarge lifts of BlIll'.9f0'7If', uncut save for the edges. They are built into the wall of the house, and p1'ovide an unusual touch to its architecture. Vtiithindoors further evidences of Bl2lC'Sll01l!',S multiple uses are apparent. The focal point of the Penning's high-ceilinged livingroom is its Bluestone fireplace. Here one may find the Pennings' young' son, Johnny, playing' with his toys. fBy looking' closely, one can see .Tohnny's favorite animal, who got into our picture of the fireplace unawaresj An examination of this fireplace poses an interesting' question. XVhat is the orig'in of the Word Catskill'l? The individual stones of this fireplace a1'e called Hcatfacesf' because they are cut parallel to the grain of the stone. A theory held by Mr. Penning, is that it was from these stones that the mountains derived their name. Instead of being' called for the abundance of Wildcats said to be found in their forests, they may in reality be named for the catface rock which is hewn from their quarries. In the kitchen of the home, we may see an American product adapted to a t'ontinental style. Into one corner of the room is built an exact replica of a Swedish oven. The Pennings savv this idea during' their travels abroad. Seeking' a medium for its reproduction, they hit upon HlIlI'.9ff?'7lI'. lt is easy to see how well the Vlster stone compli- ments the Swedish design. Another feature which adds to the beauty of the Penning' home is the small staircase leading' to the upstairs rooms. Here again large slabs of Bflll'Sf0'7L!' are employed in the steps and smaller cut pieces have been set along' tl1e side to form the curved balustrade. It is only when visiting' a l1o1ne such as this, where BlZ!0Sf0'7ll' is employed in so many diverse Ways, that one appreciates its beauty. NVhile we are familiar with Bluestone curbs and sidewalks, we often fail to realize that there are other more g'lamorous uses to which it has been put. .
