The simple beauty which artists have ,always recognized in stone makes it a dignified and appropriate art theme for this yearbook. Bluestone is especially suit- able as our theme since it is so closely connected with Saugerties' history. Ulster Bluestone, the literal founda- tion of our streets and buildings, is also part of the foundation of tl1e community in a wider sense. Bluestone in the past furnished a craft by which many Saugerties men lived. We revive the saga of these stonecutters in the following pages and ask you to join us in hewing out the events of the past year from tl1e quarry of S.H.S. life. THE EDITORS Bluestone lYhen we walk along the streets of this town, up the steps of our library, or along our country roads, we see, almost without realiz- ing it, a product peeuliar to the eonnnunities of Ylster Pounty. The flagstone sidewalks in our business section, the lintels and window sills of our houses, and the eurbing of our streets have eonie from the heart of our hills. Great heaps of slag and water-filled quarry holes throughout this vicinity bear witness to this fact. At one time, the niiddle and late eighteen hundreds, these now-deserted quarries were thriving industries. Quarryville, Ulster Landing, Blue Mountain, Glaseo, and Hurley resounded to the blows of the stoneeutter's hannner. During the winter nionths, when the ground was frozen, the stripping Ca waste layer of earth and roekj was dug and blasted away. Wl101l the warin days of late spring and sunnner eanie, large lifts of fine-grained, blue tinted stone were split from their beds by means 'of wedges and niallets. Along our roads in those days one niight see the flat bottonied stone sledge, moving slowly toward the Saugerties stone dock, Glaseo or Ulster Landing with a load of stone for the dealers. This rough stone, purchased by eoinpanies maintaining buyers at all the local docks, was then transported to New York for flagging andeurb stone, or eut by skilled workers into house trinnning and building blocks. We feel that this industry of long ago was important enough to our town to warrant its being reealled i11 these pages. For this reason we use its history as a background for the features of the 1948 Sawyer. www WA 1 -T X 1 Q 1 QX ' Q Q RK K ar ,fn -xii' , x 5 9 .W A! . ..s . .S s W xi .X . .X JV' 3, r , - ' L T 3 ra. . S Students Qlmserve Arbor lbay Arbor Day is always the occasion for a special ceremony in S.H.S. Our ivy-covered walls are the product of this time-honored cusfoni of planting' an annual Arbor Day shrub. There being' no more spaee for ivy around the building, .the Senior Class bas, for the past two years, turned its atlenlion to the park opposite our school. Here John Robbins, Senior Class President, presented the Alma Mater with a flowering Shrub-a living reminder of the Class of '-LT. Jonx Romsixs addresses the sliulent body. The Pennin Home Thomas Penning' is a unique artist. He has employed the Bluestone of this region in his sculptoring, in his home, and on his grounds. The Penning' home stands on a tract of la11d which formerly held an actively Worked Bluestone quarry. Built by local stone masons under Mr. Penning s direction, it is done entirely in Ulster BfZl1'.Qf0fl1I', quarried and cut by native craftsmen. One approaches the grounds along' a wooded road. A Bluestone terrace extends before the house, and on the left a flight of stairs mounts to the roof. These stairs arelarge lifts of BlIll'.9f0'7If', uncut save for the edges. They are built into the wall of the house, and p1'ovide an unusual touch to its architecture. Vtiithindoors further evidences of Bl2lC'Sll01l!',S multiple uses are apparent. The focal point of the Penning's high-ceilinged livingroom is its Bluestone fireplace. Here one may find the Pennings' young' son, Johnny, playing' with his toys. fBy looking' closely, one can see .Tohnny's favorite animal, who got into our picture of the fireplace unawaresj An examination of this fireplace poses an interesting' question. XVhat is the orig'in of the Word Catskill'l? The individual stones of this fireplace a1'e called Hcatfacesf' because they are cut parallel to the grain of the stone. A theory held by Mr. Penning, is that it was from these stones that the mountains derived their name. Instead of being' called for the abundance of Wildcats said to be found in their forests, they may in reality be named for the catface rock which is hewn from their quarries. In the kitchen of the home, we may see an American product adapted to a t'ontinental style. Into one corner of the room is built an exact replica of a Swedish oven. The Pennings savv this idea during' their travels abroad. Seeking' a medium for its reproduction, they hit upon HlIlI'.9ff?'7lI'. lt is easy to see how well the Vlster stone compli- ments the Swedish design. Another feature which adds to the beauty of the Penning' home is the small staircase leading' to the upstairs rooms. Here again large slabs of Bflll'Sf0'7L!' are employed in the steps and smaller cut pieces have been set along' tl1e side to form the curved balustrade. It is only when visiting' a l1o1ne such as this, where BlZ!0Sf0'7ll' is employed in so many diverse Ways, that one appreciates its beauty. NVhile we are familiar with Bluestone curbs and sidewalks, we often fail to realize that there are other more g'lamorous uses to which it has been put. . ig if 3b ,ge 5 B. We have accomplished a goal, a high and worthy achievement. For many this is the end of schooling but for others it is but the beginning. Our success in life, though, will depend to a large extent on the knowledge we have gained here in these short years. . ' To the Board of Education, the faculty, the friends of the school and to you, our parents, we extend our thanks for your guidance and wisdom during these years. The challenge of life meets us now. These exercises are truly called commencement for they are the beginnings of adult life for all of us. But there is sadness in this farewell too! We are assembled for the last time as a student group in Saugerties High School. Many of our ties and friendships will be severed as we each take our own way in life. These years have provided us with memories never to be forgotten, with an insight into the knowledge and wisdom of the world. but now they have ended. We have accomplished the first goal in our life's work. We thank you-and-farewell! SALFTATORY ELLEN GARDNER U Friends. parents. teachers-we, as students of Saugerties High School, welcome you here tonight for the last time. For four busy years we have been preparing for the Commencement Exercises. Now we are ready-to end and to begin. Because each of you has contributed to our presence here tonight. it is only right that you should witness the culmination of your efforts and of ours. lVe thank you for joining us in one of the most meaningful events of our lives. and hope you will enjoy this Commencement Night, which without your aid could never have been. If you are prompted to hesitate to take H11 advertiseinent, here are some reasons that will convince you that you are getting your money 's Worth in a Sawyer advertisement. 1. The Sawyer is read by more people and for a longer period of time than any other publication produced in Saugerties. It not only reaches the majority of homes in Saugerties, but also reaches the four corners of the earth. 2. An advertisement in the Sawyer is valuable to you not only today, but tomorrow, next month, and next year. The Sawyer is 11ot thrown away. It is looked at again and again. 3. The Sawyer is your best advertising' medium for reaching the young people of the community-your future customers. Probably, more young people i11 Saugerties read the Sawyer than any other local publication. 4. You are in good company when you advertise in the .S'aa:yw'. Most of your business friends do. 5.
