CPublished consecutively except for the year 1943.5 The SAWYER is, in a large sense, a community project. At least 5f6 of it is produced locallyg 1f6- the halftones and line cuts-is manufactured in Pough- keepsie, New York. The SAWYER is not the project of any one class in our school system, but of all the students from the seventh through the twelfth grades. This year We are featuring scenes in and about Saugertiesg also pages of snapshots taken by some of our servicemen overseas. We hope you like the 1946 SAWYER. Our theme is lumbering-one of the minor local industries of our day, but an occupation at which the first settler busied himself in a major fashion When he came to Saugerties-probably in 1663. The larger in-- dustries of Saugerties are still interested in lumbering -at least indirectly, for the local paper mills use the pulp which comes from trees. Our artists have endeavored to picture incidents in the iield of lumbering and relate them to our current school activities. Six hundred nineteen former students of S.H.S. have served or are now serving in the armed forces of our country. Of these, many have brought back pictures of in- teresting and unusual places. This year the SAWYER pre- sents some of these pictures. Due to a lack of space, We could not possibly include the pictures of all. The SAWYER staff wishes to thank those who co- operated with us to make this feature possible. ll emorialn The SAWYER Editors respectfully ask you to pause with them in your perusal of these pages to pay tribute to the thirteen young men- former students here-who gave their lives in the Second World War. Just a short time ago, they were with us-walked in our halls, sat in our classes and in our auditorium, participated in our extra-class activi- ties. Now they are gone-sacrifices on the altar of loyalty and devotion that keeps our nation, our state, our community, our school alive. If they were here to receive our expressions of gratitude, we should thrill to express it. We do so with no less feeling because of their physical absence. To their families We express our sincerest condolence. THE EDITORS N QJYAVQ ChHC5't'CiR BE1ThlY1f9C7UiUdh Sdmdf. V J.0 H1 HEIYBS QTBJUCKE Natnvehfe on Gunuam. SALUTATORY This is the most momentous evening in the school life of the class of 1946. As a class we are .fawored in that we are the first peace time graduating class of Saugerties since 1941. Moreover, we are privileged in being the fiftieth graduating class of this school. Our training thus far has been to prepare us for the world. Shakespeare has called the world a stage and all the men and women players. We, the class of 1946, are now, figuratively speaking, in the Wings of that stage, about to enter the drama .of life as active players. We feel deeply the honor of this occasion. We welcome you to- night, and hope that we can adequately express our sin- cere emotions to you. JOYCE SNYDER VALEDICTORY To-night is the evening towards which we have been eagerly looking for a long time. This is the last mee-ting of the class of 1946, as a student unit. At times we thought this moment would never come. Now it has arrived and we approach the future with varied emotions. We are not entirely sure of ourselves. We look forward with awe and confusion. We wzonder what will happen as we go through life. Nevertheless, we are anxious to verify our motto, The more prepared, the more powerful. Up to now we have been receiving the tools for our life ahead, and now we set out to use them. We have been aided in obtaining these tools, by our parents, the faculty, and the Board of Education. We feel very grateful for the assistance they have given us. We shall strive to make good use of what they have given us. And so, as we leave school, we say to them, Thank you, and farewell. Quan Su-V60-5 - KAY KMSER Dear Advertiser: The rates of SAWYER advertising, which are higher than for some books, are justified for many reasons. If you are prompted to hesitate to take an advertisement, here are some reasons that will convince you that you are getting your money's worth in a SAWYER advertisement. 1. The SAWYER is read by more people and for a longer period of time than any other publi- cation produced in Saugerties. It not only reaches the majority of homes in Saugerties, but also reaches the four corners of the earth. 2. An advertisement in the SAWYER is valuable to you not only today, but tomorrow, next month, and next year. The SAWYER is not thrown away. It's looked at again and again. 3. The SAWYER is your best advertising medium for reaching the young people of the community-your future customers. Probably, more young people in Saugerties read the SAW- YER than any other local publication. 4. You are in good company when you ad- vertise in the SAWYER. Most of your business friends do. 5. It makes new friends and keeps old ones. We do not ask for your advertisement as a gift, but assure you that it is a sound business in- vestment.
