ANTEBELLUM BEAUTIES At the end of September seven girls from the school were selected to partic- ipate in interviews that would give them the chance to become an Azalea Trail Maid. Eliese Clack, Karen Greene, Linda Moore, Karen Nikolakis, Carmen Reyes, Libby Squires, and Sharon Wil- son were chosen by judges Mrs. Doro- thy Curtis, Mrs. Barbara Galle, and Mrs. Cheryl Jordan. At the Greater Gulf State Fair in October, Eliese Clack, Karen Greene, Karen Nikolakis, and Sharon Wilson were announced as members of the 1979 Azalea Trail Court. After designing and having their dresses, hats, and parasols made, the girls were ready to begin their appear- ances. The court participated in the Christ- mas on the River celebration in Demopolis, the Senior Bowl Basketball Tournament, the Senior Bowl football game, the Camelia Show, the Junior Miss Program, and the Easter Parade in Disneyworld. The fifty girls were divided into ten groups of five girls each and within their groups they made various appearances at the many tour- ist attractions around Mobile County. Being in the Azalea Trail was not all glamour and fun as it appeared to the public most of the time. Behind the scenes was the panic of a missing shoe or gauntlet, a rip in a dress just before time to start a program, or a dress thrown out of shape due to a bent hoop-skirt. Also a lot of fun for the Maids was getting up at three in the morning to be ready to leave on a trip at four-thirty. All of the appearances and experiences that the Trail had resulted in a year that would never be forgotten.
