Girls, Sports Club HOCKEY AND SOCCER, our two major field sports, started off the yearis activity with a bang. The high point of the hockey season was the Play Day at Granville in October. In spite of a rather small field and an unexpected snowstorm, the twelve players representing S.H.S. returned home with second place. There was keen competition between three teams in soccer. With iiOld Man Winter just around the corner, the sports program went inside and took up H.Q.'s in the gym. But who could have been unaware of that? The screams and shouts that issued from there every week could hardly have resulted from anything less than a wild and exciting game of volleyball or basketball. It has been said that those many blocks away heard the enthusiastic cries of the nonresidents in one of their noon- hour battles. Number one rating in volleyball goes to the noon-hour varsity which defeated the Juniors, winners of the Interclass Tournament, while the Sophomores walked off with top honors in basketball. Ping pong is another sport which provides much competition during the winter months. The incessant ping ping which has echoed through the halls has been a frequent reminder that ping pong is becomingincreasingly popular. The Freshman-Sophomore champion, Betty Herzog, and the Iunior-Senior champ, Joyce Wolcott, have not, as yet, played off their match. OUTING CLUB has been much in the limelight all year long. Hikes and bike trips were the main project this fall. With the first snowfall came many skiing expeditions which always ended with hopes for deeper and more frequent storms. A new Archery Club has been formed and we see many future Robin Hoods in the ofEng. Some of the top-ranking tennis players in last fall's tournament were: I. Callahan, D. Kirkpatrick, J. Wolcott, J. Downing, and D. Washburn. Bowling,r honors go to Jane Aitken, who rolled up an average score of 13954; , while Virginia Millis had the highest individual score of 181. In the Spring a young girlis fancy turns to-well, shall we say softball? The warm weather seems to have done things to the sports-minded mem- bers of the fairer sex. With two practices already over, the characteristic crack of ball against bat will soon start things humming at the Rec. The G.S.C. under the capable leadership of President Mary McMahon has enjoyed a very successful year. Membership totals nearly hfty, and the girls have helped sponsor many school functions. So ends another successful year of sports activity made possible by the never-failing enthusiasm and co-operation of Miss Ames. NANCY LESTER. .E291.
