Adviser Girls, Sports Club HOCKEY AND SOCCER, our two major field sports, started off the yearis activity with a bang. The high point of the hockey season was the Play Day at Granville in October. In spite of a rather small field and an unexpected snowstorm, the twelve players representing S.H.S. returned home with second place. There was keen competition between three teams in soccer. With iiOld Man Winter just around the corner, the sports program went inside and took up H.Q.'s in the gym. But who could have been unaware of that? The screams and shouts that issued from there every week could hardly have resulted from anything less than a wild and exciting game of volleyball or basketball. It has been said that those many blocks away heard the enthusiastic cries of the nonresidents in one of their noon- hour battles. Number one rating in volleyball goes to the noon-hour varsity which defeated the Juniors, winners of the Interclass Tournament, while the Sophomores walked off with top honors in basketball. Ping pong is another sport which provides much competition during the winter months. The incessant ping ping which has echoed through the halls has been a frequent reminder that ping pong is becomingincreasingly popular. The Freshman-Sophomore champion, Betty Herzog, and the Iunior-Senior champ, Joyce Wolcott, have not, as yet, played off their match. OUTING CLUB has been much in the limelight all year long. Hikes and bike trips were the main project this fall. With the first snowfall came many skiing expeditions which always ended with hopes for deeper and more frequent storms. A new Archery Club has been formed and we see many future Robin Hoods in the ofEng. Some of the top-ranking tennis players in last fall's tournament were: I. Callahan, D. Kirkpatrick, J. Wolcott, J. Downing, and D. Washburn. Bowling,r honors go to Jane Aitken, who rolled up an average score of 13954; , while Virginia Millis had the highest individual score of 181. In the Spring a young girlis fancy turns to-well, shall we say softball? The warm weather seems to have done things to the sports-minded mem- bers of the fairer sex. With two practices already over, the characteristic crack of ball against bat will soon start things humming at the Rec. The G.S.C. under the capable leadership of President Mary McMahon has enjoyed a very successful year. Membership totals nearly hfty, and the girls have helped sponsor many school functions. So ends another successful year of sports activity made possible by the never-failing enthusiasm and co-operation of Miss Ames. NANCY LESTER. .E291. President IRENE SHAW ........................... Vice-President ANNE PETERSON ............................ Secretary JEAN CONNOLLY ............................ Recorder MISS WELLS ................................. Adviser T361. Girlsl League of Saratoga High ON DECEMBER 4, 1941, the Girls, League of Saratoga High was formed the purposes of which were: 1. To create a more friendly feeling among all girls. 2. To give training in leadership and participation to a larger number of girls. 3. To help make adjustment to high school less confusing. 4. To work for general welfare of school and community. Although the club is still young, it nevertheless has accomplished in this stage many things in the education held as well as in the social and civic world. Educationally we have helped the girls who are interested in nursing and beauty culture by the informal teas that were given, at which time members of their profession spoke on questions concerning that line of work. We also formed First Aid Classes which were ably instructed by Dr. Hoeve and Miss Mary Risorti. In the civic wOrld, we have aided the Office of Civilian Defense by taking care of the booth in Woolworth's store and selling defense stamps. We have also helped Bundles for Bluejackets in their drive for money for Comfort Kits for the sailors. We were glad to assist the Parent-Teachers Association at the concessions during the Music Festival. In school we have tried to make adjustment easier for the incoming freshmen as well as newcomers by revising the Freshmen Handbook and starting a Big Sister Idea which is being used in a great many colleges today. We also have aided this years yearbook by sponsoring a dance along with the Junior Class. Socially we have accomplished much which will just have to be men- tioned, as the details of the parties would take much too long to tell. The parties given were two supper parties for the girls, a tea for the faculty, a tea for incoming freshmen. The most credit for work in the club goes to Miss Wells, without whom the club would have never begun. Her ideas and suggestions along with her complete co-operation inspired the club and its members. Credit is also due to Alice Stevens, who was chairmen of the council before and during the forming of the constitution, and the present oHicers who are as follows: President, Dorcas Fox; Vice-President, Irene Shaw; Secretary, Anne Peterson, and Recorder, Jean Connolly. The oHicers would like to thank the council and all the girls of high school for their hearty co-operation in our activities. DORCAS Fox. .m A Full House BY FRED JACKSON DIRECTED BY MISS LENA SMITH CAST: Ueft t0 righti: Bob Carroll, Willis Stevens, June Knapp, Helen Gilbert, Grace Duval, Jane Tarrant, Robert Cline, Dorcas Fox, Bettie Browne, Adelbert Sahlberg, Rita Sem- mel, Harold Clark, Clement James, Douglas Wright. The cast and director of this yearis Senior Play are to be congratulated for their uproarious comedy-farce presentation, A Full House. The action centered about the hilarious complica- tions interrupting the wedded bliss of a newly married couple, George and Ottily Howe11.Jane Tarrant portrayed the lovely young brideeofea- day and Robert Cline was the bridegroom- lawyer suddenly called away to recover some telltale love letters which were preventing Del Sahlberg, as Ned Pembroke, from proposing to his sweetheart, Daphne, played by Bettie Browne. Douglas Wright, the second-story-rnan, and Dorcas Fox, the half-witted Susie from Sioux City NI dont know nothin' i, provided comedy high spots. Willis Stevens was remark- able as a typical English butler. Rita Semmel, the scheming chorus girl; Grace Duval, the in- dignant Mrs. Fleming; Helen Gilbert the owner of the stolen necklace; June Knapp, the Edna- Mae-Oliver Aunt; Sergeant Harold Clark; Clement iYou-can-come-in-but-you-canit-get- outi, James and Bob U-do'delti Carroll per- formed with distinction. Back to school-do feel great re- morse at sizzling summer close, but will endeavor to get into laboring spirit. Sept. 24. This day did witness most thrill- ing Senior Class meeting. Was delighted to see Jimmy Galligan tAHD re-elected president. Sept. 26. Assembly did prove most exciting -cheerleaders gave rousing send-oFt to football team and future doth look very bright! Oct. 15. Much elated over prospect of Teachers' Convention. Had become a bit weary when dismissal bell rang at 11:40. Elation did take fall on being told of no vacation. Methinks life can be diHicult. Oct. 31. Did dubiously proceed to Hallow- een Dance in gym. Much amazed to find both lass and laddie mixed, with nary a wallHower or bashful Johnny in sight. Do believe Iuniors deserve credit for such diligent work. Nov. 1. Did persevere thru rain and sleet to see Schuyler defeat our sturdy little team. With dampened spirits, did reflect that boys forgot to eat their Wheaties. Nov. 17. This day did bring much-self has gained a year and tonight did witness iiTrial by Jury. Infinity of praise due Miss Dohig and the chorus. Also this day did receive report card-enough said. Dec. 7. Pearl Harbor attacked by Japanese. Student body greatly mystified and upset. Dec. 2 3. Did participate in Christmas Play. Most thrilled by pageant and tableau. Do eagerly look forward to white and gay vacation. And so do Close Miss Peppy's Diary for this year. Ian. ?. Today did finish mid-terms AH-me. lTis a pity the F rench class does not have a foreign legion! Do believe self would enroll immediately. Feb. 6. Did scurry home at signal of air- raid today. Much giggling at complicated arrangements, but methinks precaution was most valuable. Do not envy those more accustomed to them: Feb. 20. Cheerleaders did don new uni- forms. Do believe if team cannot win now, even Coach Gale can do nothing. Mar. 6. Put in appearance at Convention Hall where self was thrillingly entertained by Springfield College Gymnasts. Did chuckle heartily at antics of the clown. So home to practice somersaults. Mar. 9. Longaawaited play did finally ara rive. Self did join with thirteen fellow sufferers and did present to student body TA Full House, much-talked-about Senior play. To me one memorable line-Bob Carrollls iiI dold it. A431. 12. Did put in much-belated appear- ance at Science Club. Greatly fascinated by Mr. Leon Dwyeris illustrated lecture, but do believe own knowledge of elec- tricity to be frightfully deficient. Mar. 20. To assembly play, entitled The Daffy Dills. Do believe Sophomores too highly clever, and profusion of talent doth seem promising. Apr. 1. Class valedictorian was found to- day in Robert Cline. Am proud to say I knew him when. Sincerest congratula- tions to both him and Don O'Neil, our salutatorian. Apr. 9. To John MacGregor, another hit. His beautiful work on Easter play, The Way to Peace, another four-beller. Apr. 17. Tonight did square dance in gym. Verily do believe Girlsl League does de- serve credit and many thanks from year- book staff. Much amused to see Dot Dyer swing so vigorously, but do believe floor was swept that afternoon. May 15. This night did trot self to Junior- Senior Ball. Music was heavenly; did dance till feet grew numb, and so to bed. May 20. Graduation announcements did arrive. D0 hope all will find use. Am send- ing note of cost to Board of Regents in case said Regents plan tough exams. Have persuaded several Seniors to join me in future suit. June 16. Did take first final. Do believe graduation announcements useless. june 24. This night will bring diploma. And so reluctantly pen farewell in diary. Do wish success to those who follow and especially to Miss Peppy. Sleepily, JANE TARRANT. 'i43l' Our H igh School Choir Miss Dohig Director The Easter Pageant Library Club Miss F eeney Director Secr'etarial Club Miss Raymond Director Camera Club Mr. Van Allen Director Last Will and Testament WE, THE CLAss OF 1942, Saratoga Springs High School, City of Saratoga Springs, and State of New York, being still in control of somewhat addied, muddled and befuddled faculties, do hereby make and promulgate this, Our Last Will and Testament, in the following and subsequent manner: FIRST: To the incoming seniors we give and bequeath our abundant but latent supply of school spirit and enthusiasm for study. SECOND: We give and bequeath to Miss Johnson one genuine mahogany, two-toned, convertible, delicieux, baby grand piano, to be a permanent iixture in room 102; afore- said piano to remove the necessity of solicit- ing the aid of the obliging janitor in import- ing the broken-down piano from the gym whenever French classes are in a musical mood. THIRD: We give and bequeath to Mr. Butler a bright-red leather memorandum book, to remind him to distribute current events papers while the events are still current. FOURTH: To Mrs. Richardson we give and bequeath one tMilitary Secret, censored by War Departmenty, to be used in maintain- ing order in study hall. FIFTH: We give and bequeath to Coach Gale one unabridged copy of the Army Code of Ethics, the contents of which to be thor- oughly digested by said Mr. Gale, and used by him as a basis for the training of unsus- pecting Freshman gym classes. SIXTH: To Mr. Johnson we give the privi- lege of extending his science classes ten ad- ditional minutes, said ten minutes to be used solely for eloquent dissertations on the exces- sive dissipation and lack of animation of the youth of this fair nation. SEVENTH: We give and bequeath to each member of the faculty one de luxe, oversized tricycle, to be used in negotiating the ex- hausting trip to and from school, said vehicle to lessen the wear and tear on both the auto- mobiles of said faculty members and on said faculty members themselves. EIGHTH: We give and bequeath to Mr. Clinnick one luminous, unbreakable baton to be employed in directing the band during blackouts. NINTH: We give and bequeath to Mr. Swick and Miss Delaney individual copies of this 1942 RECORDER, which they may freely and ecstatically tear bit by bit into small shreds, burn in the tire of the damned, or otherwise horribly deface and destroy as due personal satisfaction for the heart-rending moments of agony spent advising and re- straining its staff. TENTH: To the school in general we ex- press our heart-felt condolences for having to part with this, the biggest and best senior class that ever was and at the same time ex- press the hope that student morale will not completely collapse after our departure. In conclusion, we appoint General MacArthur and Gene Tierney as executors of this our Last Will and Testament. In Witness Whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our name, this twentieth day of April, in the year Nineteen Hundred and Forty-two.
