MR. LUCION V. MYLES, head of the science department, teaches chemistry, biology, and botany. He received his M.E. degree from Southeastern State College and has been with the Sapulpa school system six years. His school activities include sponsoring the Camera Club and junior class. MISS MARY ANN WELPTON has taught biology and physical education at SHS for two years. She received her B.S. degree from Central State College and is doing graduate work in physical education at Oklahoma State University. She sponsors the Pep Club and participates in sports activities. Her favorite saying is, What is it??? MR. MIKE COY is doing graduate work at TU in guidance and counseling. He received his B.A. degree from OSU. During his first year at Sapulpa, Mr. Coy has taught biology and has been very active in organizing the Boys' Pep Club. His church affiliation is Methodist. in math and science courses What do two points determine? How is the mechanical advantage of the five simple machines determined? Students seek the answers to these and many other similar questions during enrollment in challenging math and science courses. The science department encourages students to seek careers in the diversified fields of scientific endeavor and to gain an understanding of the part that science plays in our modern world. Biology students learn through dissection; aspiring young chemists prepare laboratory experiments; and physics students try to gain a thorough knowledge of the laws involving energy and matter. Students planning ahead for college prepare themselves by enrolling in the informative math courses offered. These include algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Applying their skills with energy and verve, students become acquainted with methods of reasoning that will enable them to cope with problems of the future. 21

Miss Hilderbrand patiently waits for Tony to get that right answer. Bill I.yda puts Mr. Myles into a state of shock by asking him if he can produce a teacher dissolving formula. Experimentation is key word Retiring after 39 years of teaching, MR. HF.NRY SIMMONS, plans to stay in the profession by doing some substitute teaching in Sapulpa. He will probably spend some time on the local golf course too. During his eight years at SHS Mr. Simmons has taught Algebra I, physics, and Algebra II. Under his leadership the F.T.A. has earned and maintained a high standing among school organizations.' Mr. Simmons is an active lay leader in the First Methodist Church. MISS MARY LOUISF HILDF.RBRAND has taught mathematics at SHS for five years. She received her M.S. degree from Oklahoma State University. The Devotion Club is fortunate in having her as its sponsor. She also is a Sunday School teacher, a member of her church choir, and president of the youth division of the Church of the Naza-rene, where she attends regularly. 20

During her nine years of teaching in SHS, MRS. HELEN HAIL MCALLISTER has taught four years of English and five years of United States history and international problems. Mrs. McAllister has a M.A. degree from O.S.U. Aside from the many hours required for school work, Mrs. McAllister finds time to co-sponsor the junior class and also the Horizon Club. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She attends the Presbyterian Church. Current history provokes thought enriches knowledge of world events As girl's counselor, MISS MILDRED FISHER has played an important role at SHS for the past eight years. As a graduate of George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, she earned a M.A. degree. Miss Fisher teaches psychology, sponsors the Student Council, is a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Kappa Kappa Iota. MR. DAVID SIPPY, our highly respected football coach and athletic director, has taught social studies for five years at SHS. He has a M.E. degree from Northeastern State College. Mr. Sippy is very active in the Key Club and the Letterman’s Club. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and bowling. It has been said that history repeats itself for those who have no knowledge of history. In the social studies department an effort is made not only to help the student to understand the present by the study of the past, but also to develop in the student the ability to think critically and to respect and understand the heritage of our country and of the world at large. 22 No, Cortez wasn't a Civil War general!
