Foreword AS MODERN AS DAY AFTER TOMORROW—In this ever-changing world the future is unknown. Day after tomorrow will you be traveling on super highways—be taught by electronic brains—eat pills which supplement whole meals—or rocket back and forth from one constellation to another? We cannot begin to predict what will happen to the members of the 1962 graduating class, but it is the sincere desire of this editorial staff that we leave with you an annual depicting what must surely have been some of the happiest and most rewarding years of your lives. In choosing the modern theme we wished to convey the idea that ours is a world of new creations and concepts, of unlimited horizons, and full of promise for all the days after tomorrow. Brite. Mr. Brite has helped to promote our school spirit by providing Sapulpa High School with a hard working band. He has dedicated his days to bettering the instrumental program throughout the entire school system. The dedication of this yearbook to Mr. Brite is but a small token of our appreciation for his devotion to the students and faculty of this school. 10 EDUCATION does not mean teaching people what they do not know. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. It is not teaching the youth the shapes of letters and the tricks of numbers, and then leaving them to turn their arithmetic to roguery, and their literature to lust. It means, on the contrary, training them into the perfect exercise and kingly continence of their bodies and souls. It is a painful, continual, and difficult work to be done by kindness, by watching, by warning, by precept, and by praise, but above all —by example. —John Ruskin. ADMINISTRATION MR. These are some of the famous words voiced by the stagecraft crew and the assembly planning board. Every assembly morning, at the crack of dawn, the stagecraft crew may be found in the gym, madly rushing around, setting up the stage, placing chairs down for the seniors, adjusting the mike, and learning what their specific assignments are for that morning. Aiding in the production of an assembly are the members of the assembly planning board. Their job is to help outline the assembly and run various errands for Prof Carter. Formerly these people performed behind the scenes, but now all can see the work that they do. After each assembly, the stagecraft crew, the assembly planning board, and Prof pray that someday there will be an auditorium where assemblies can be performed in the best style. 90 Socrates called beauty a short-lived tyranny; Plato, a privilege of nature; Theophrastus, a silent cheat; Theocritus, a delightful prejudice; Carneades, a solitary kingdom; Aristotle, that it was better than all the letters of recommendation in the world; Homer, that it was a glorious gift of nature, and Ovid, that it was a favor bestowed by the gods. The fountain of beauty is the heart, and every generous thought illustrates the walls of your chamber. —Quarles PERSONALITIES 91 Jan Giacomo Yearbook Queen A contest is always exciting, and the annual contest for Yearbook King and Queen is no exception to the rule. Girls’ and Boys’ State Delegates Attend Conclave Girls' and Boys' State, as the name implies, is a state in which government is taught to those who will one day decide upon the leaders of free America, or who will perhaps become leaders themselves. There are political parties, political speeches, campaigns, and elections with each person taking part in the various activities. Friendships and loyalty strengthen the states until they work as a unified nation, forgetting petty differences to strive for peace. 100 All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work. Money was wisely invested in these fine new basses. “Poetry in Sound” During the school year the 66 piece Sapulpa High School band, under the very capable leadership of George C. Brite, was very active. Added interest to football games was made possible with the band performing pregame and half-time presentations. The band helped promote school spirit by playing for assemblies and by the pep band playing for home basketball games. Early last fall Sapulpa's Marching Band acquired high honors at the Perry marching contest. The marching band also participated in local parades and in the Tulsa Christmas parade. Eager band members work incessantly each year trying to raise money by selling magazines and candy. This year through the hard efforts of band members and the Quarter Note Club, the band was very fortunate to acquire five new basses. Each year tryouts are held for All-State Band and Orchestra. This year two students were fortunate to attend. Don Thompson received the honor to attend All-State Orchestra and Kathryn Moore, All-State Band. Everyone looked forward to the annual Mid-Winter Concert held in February. Hard work was then begun in preparation for District Contest held at T.U. Later in the spring, band members from all Sapulpa schools joined together to present the All-School Concert. 104 Twirlers: Barbara Kendall, Paulette Sheriff. Judy Sheffel, Carol Adelblue.
