ji 4 -tf tr ±2 ihrr f fi-j-. WORD J s Y rr sT ■wo o R E THE SAND IN AN HOURGLASS IS LIKE FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL, IT SLIPS BY SO QUICKLY THAT IT IS HARDLY NOTICED UNTIL THE END IS ALMOST REACHED. IT IS WITH THIS IN MIND THAT THE SAPULPA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR CLASS PROUDLY GIVES THE 1958 SAPULPAN HOPING THAT IT WILL BRING ALMOST FORGOTTEN MEMORIES TO LIFE AND THAT IT WILL KEEP A LITTLE OF THAT SCHOOL SPIRIT, WHICH WE LOVE SO MUCH, BURNING IN OUR HEARTS FOR MANY MANY YEARS. IN OUR HUMBLE WAY WE GIVE TO YOU THIS EDITION OF THE SAPULPAN, HAVING THEREIN THE RECORD OF EVENTS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR OF 1957-58. Our Prayer Our Heavenly Father: We thank Thee for the lives of famous men and women who have made our nation great by their service to Thee in their day. Make us to be ever mindful of our responsibility to so live that our service may be added to the greatness of our nation in our minds. Amen. Sapulpa High School Hymn Myrtle MacKay Jean Casteel Guiding light and leading star IValching inspiring where e’er we are; E’en tho’ we sing thy praise to the sky We can never repay you Sapulpa High. To thy name our hearts respond And leap to rememherance of comrades fond; All this and more you mean to us, why? Because we love you Sapulpa High. Formed late last spring in conjunction with the local Kiwanis. The club has already made several outstanding contributions to the school and community. The first service project the club undertook was providing ushers at the home football games. At Christmas the club adopted a needy family and provided them with clothing, toys, and food. To boost school spirit the club presented a victory flag and later, a picture of the football team which was the Oklahoma Six Conference Champions. In order to finance these projects, the club took charge of the concession stands at the home basketball games and furnished candy machines in the school and at various stores throughout the city. Other projects included a carwash and a slave sale. In April quite a few of the members attended the District Convention in Houston. The final project was a combination social and money raising affair when the club held a shipwreck dance that was considered one of the best dances of the year. The initial faculty sponsor of the club was Mr. R. E. Thurman. After getting the club off to a firm start, Mr. Thurman moved away and was replaced by Mr. Jerry Billings, junior high school gym instructor and high school wrestling coach. The officers were Dick Judd, president; Phil Henderson, vice president; Don Berry, secretary; and Don Wallace, treasurer. The council this year consisted of thirty-five members from which seven officers were elected. In an all-school election each spring, the students elect the president and vice-president of the Student Council for the following year. This last summer the Sapulpa Student Council had it’s own summer workshop at Skyline Park. This year the council put a new coke machine in the cafeteria and re-established the hook-up in the cafeteria. They sponsored the Polio Drive and planned the “Now or Never Week”. The council chose a student of the month each month and a student of the year from the students of the month. The council also chose a club of the year. Other activities sponsored by the council included the Student-Faculty Basketball Game, President’s Banquet, Student-Directories, and provided transportation on buses for the students to some of the football games. Four delegates attended the state convention at McAlester and then reported to the local council about their trip. With the help of our two wonderful sponsors, Miss Fisher, and Mr. Clay Carr, the Student Council had another successful year. Sixty-four TRI-HI-Y TRI-HI-Y OFFICERS President.......................... Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y combined to present the Easter Assembly. Tri-Hi-Y projects for this year included a rummage sale, the selling of fountain pens, gifts to the unfortunate children at Christmas time, and a World Service Pledge which went into Nation-wide Hi-Y campaign to help people in other nations. Club of Sapulpa is composed of seventy-five active members, an increase of forty-five members over last years total. The club has had many successful projects this year. Fifty members attended the F. T. A. Day at T. U. and a large delegation attended the state convention at Oklahoma State University in April. Other activities included electing Mr. and Miss F. T. A., who were Jim Stockard and Billie Mallory and sponsoring a Christmas party for children from the ages of four to eleven. In accordance with a school project, the club donated a shrub to beautify the school campus. A special day was set aside so that the members could observe the teaching methods in the grade schools. A majority of the students had an opportunity on several occasions to substitute in the Sapulpa public grade schools. Along with the increase in the membership of the club it became not only one of the largest, but also one of the most active in school affairs. One hundred, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas by Jim Hawkins ‘Twas the night before Christmas, the halls were so bare Not even “Bom” or Mrs. Mitchell was there; The teachers were home for a vacation of rest Glad to he rid of that “certain” pest. Mrs. VanWinkle was nestled all snug in her bed, While visions of former meals danced in her head; And Simmons in his kerchief and long woolen cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap— When all of a sudden he woke with a start, And sprang from his bed as spry as a lark!!! Away to the window he flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash,— Then he returned and sighed with relief, “I’m glad it’s no math student giving me grief.” Then what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh and eleven reindeer With a little old driver with all his luck I knew in a moment that it must be coach Chuck. More rapid than eagles his charges they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name; Now Jimmy, now Bill, now Don and Poo Foo On Ronnie, on Eli, on Gene and Hindu Let’s go Brice, now Dick and Faithful R. C. This may soon be called another ‘Split T.’ So we’ll play this game with reindeers and sleigh And maybe work out another championship some day. As I drew in my head and was turning around, Down the chimney Dear Clyde came with a bound, A bundle of trophies he had flung on his back, And he looked like a Champion just opening his pack. His eyes how they twinkled as he stared at the shelves That were dirty and dusty for lack of use of themselves. He had a kind face and little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly. And laugh; how he laughed as he mused to himself, “I knew there was some way I could fill this old shelf!” The Oklahoma Six Champs should be proud of themselves. And Wells was elated, “Christmas at last, Now they won’t cut paths across the green grass!” In fact I think that everyone was quite glad, That Christmas had come at the time it had, And so with the feeling of joy and delight, We bid you, “Merry Christmas, and to all—Goodnight?” One hundred one . . .
