BRITE Director The eighty piece band under the capable direction of George C. Brite brought home honor after honor this year. i Besides the regular attendance at football games, the marching band Won superior honors at the Ponca City Nlarching Contest, and the Bi-State Marching Contest, Which Was held in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The band also appeared at TU Band Day and the OU Band Day, as well as many other appearances. The band presented their Nlid-Winter' Semi-Cen- tennial contest during February. The concert Was given as a television theme. Guest narrator was John Dore- mus, a graduate of SHS. Guest conductor Was Dr. Garth K. Blake, principal of SHS, and former band director. The concert band made an outstanding showing at the Tulsa District Contest winning nearly an eighth of all superior honors given. The band then entered the state contest at Oklahoma A. 81 M. The band appearing for their first season in seven thousand dollars Worth of blue and gray uniforms Wound up their formal concert series by participating in the annual Ucombined band festivall' which featured the grade school and junior high bands. Some of it's activ- ities have included a fall concert, the Chris- tmas assembly program, a Christmas din- ner for the choir members, and a caroling program throughout the city. At the end of the evening the choir was served hot chocolate and spudnuts by the Treble-Clef Club. They also presented the spring musical, Went to district and state contests, and joined with the band in presenting a spring concert. g 'NVith the able backing of the Treble- Clef Club, several money making projects were carried through, enabling the vocal department to purchase a phonograph, tape recorder, and portable steel risers. Yi During the summer four members of the council attended the Student Council Wo1'kshop held at the University of Qkla- homa at Norman. In November several members attended the Southern Associa- tion of Student Councils Convention held in Tulsa at Central. Among the Student Council's activities for the year are the publishing of Student Directories, sponsorship of Club of the Year, Student of the lVIonth, 'KNOW or Never Wieck , Presidents Banquet, lVlarch of Dimes campaign, and Student-Faculty Basketball Game. The council had murals. painted and framed to hang in the cafeteria and also purchased vases and artificial flowers for the cafeteria tables. ' Tri-Ili-Y This year the Tri-Hi-Y Club, a Christian organiza- tion, with its membership of 61, has been one of the most active clubs in Sapulpa High School. Under the sponsor- ship of Mrs. Byrda Kuykendall, Mrs. Catherine Holland, and Miss Mary McDairmant, they have held bi-monthly meetings at the high school. The meetings consisted of scheduled programs with guest speakers. The social calendar of the club consisted of a coke party, In-Paradise dance, a float in the Homecoming paradefa booth at the Halloween Carnival, induction ceremony, Spring Formal dance, at which the Tri-Hi-Y Dreamboat was crowned. Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y combined to present the Easter Assembly. Tri-Hi-Y projects for this year included a Wo1'ltl Service Pledge which went into a nation-wide Hi-Y cam- paign to help people in other nations, gifts to unfortunate children at Christmas time, and sold Humpty Dumptys to raise money. Sapulpa 56 Marquette O The people in Sapulpa got a chance to see some of the Chiefs' fine offensive and defensive power as the Chieftains rolled over the Meteors 56 to 0. The game was highlighted by Eugene Powshiekls eight straight points after touchdown. Sapulpa 27 Sand Springs 6 In the 3rd game of the season the Chiefs showed some of their offensive power as Ronnie Powers scord three touchdowns. Sapulpals other touchdown came when Leon Pritchard recovered a fumble and went 41 yards for the score. Sapulpa I2 Okmulgee 7 In the game against Okmulgee played at Holmes Park, the Chiefs played great offensive ball by get- ting two touchdowns in the first quarter. Okmulgee was unable to score until the last quarter when they made their only touchdown. Sapulpa 38 Webster 6 In a rough, bruising game Sapulpa again came out on the long end of the score as we beat Webster 38 to 6. Phil Henderson played exceptionally well in this game. Cn the last play of the game he went 48 yards for the touchdown. Sapulpa 27 Bartlesville 7 In a crucial Oklahoma 6 battle the Chieftains Eigllly-eight beat the Wildcats from Bartlesville 27 to 7. Sa- pulpals first score came when Eli Walker skirted left end for 47 yards. Ronnie Powers scored two touchdowns both on one yard plunges. Phil Hender- son passed to R. C. Smith for Sapulpa's last score. Rogers I3 Sapulpa 7 After scoring in the first quarter on a 73 yard juant by Eli Walker around left end the Chiefs showed some of their defensive power. The Ropers scored in the second quarter but missed the conver- sion. The game then settled into a defensive battle until late in the 4th quarter when Rogers inter- cepted a lateral and went for the touchdown. Sapulpa 25 Broken Arrow 18 The Chiefs rolled over Broken Arrow 25 to 18 at Broken Arrow. .lim Stockard was our big gun. He repeatedly ripped off big gains through the Broken Arrow line late in the game, as we came from behind to hand the Tigers thier first loss.
