'ia' KINGS EE Only in America the Beautiful I didn't know what was go- in g on. Neither did the candi- dates. -- Claris juarez The halftime buzzer sounded and the field workers quickly emerged on to the field. A red carpet and an archway made of red, white, and blue balloons marked the spot where the candidates would wait for the outcome. The stands were packed to full capacity and you could scarcely squeeze your way through the enormous crowd, filled with alumni, present Sultans, and teachers. Mayor Doyle, the guest commentator, explained how the winners would be recognized. A single white rose signified the Homecoming Queen and King, and balloons the color of the ones the win- ners weregholding would be let off. However, this time a brand new element was involved. Something that had never happened in the history of the school happened that night. By announcing that the students had elected two kings, we broke a tradition never even thought of before. Confusion broke out ev- erywhere, even among the candidates, when Rob Cambell and Tom Christopher each held the determining white roses. The stunned crowd didn't know what to do - much less who to cheer for. The mayor explained: there was a tie. Chris Juarez commented, I didn't know what was going on. Neither did the candidates. Finally the chaos subsided and after the tumultuous cheers for the newly recognized winners finally died, Sara Smith was crowned Queen. The actual game did not come out as was expected but the team put up a very good fight. The Monte Vista Monarchs eventually reigned victorious. The final score: 21-14.
