The indi- vidual who works for the team takes pressure off' themselves. This year's varsity track members competed as a team. By working together, the overall attitude rose tremendously. Most ofthe runners had the desire to win. What they lacked in some quality, they made up for in spirit. The girls' team had new young talent that balanced out the returning veterens. Tina Allen, the best long distance runner in the county, led the team. A new talent, Natalie Burks showed speed and endurance in the middle distances. Coach Wayne Layton found all the runners Willing to compete. His main goal was to provide each member with the proper training and positive desire to win or improve. The boys' team, headed by coach Lloyd Kaster, had the most strength in distance and quarter milers. The top distance runners being Dave Ivy, Todd Hem- ingway and Chris Cohn. The quarter milersg Sabre Hanson, Jaime Hill, Cameron Rankin and Tom Eason comprised the mile relay team and competed in the Jack-In The Box Invita- tional, placing third overall. Showing that as a team, competi- tors can develop their best qualities and build a winning team. THIS PAGE clockwise: With a winning spring, Howard Morgan long jumps. 108 TRACK Hidden Talent Running is a sport that everyone can do, but competing on a team as an athlete is not. To be a good runner takes physical endurance, dedication and skill. The Santana J.V. track team had these qualities and more. They had the excitement and spirit of adventurers. The J.V., made up of mostly freshmen, is not always recognized for its talented young athletes, it's usually hidden behind the exploits of the Varsity team. But this year's team had plenty of potential especially in the form of Kenny Fish, an aspiring 880 and mile runner. Also Joe Young, a hurdler and mile relay runner and David Davis mov- ing up in the high jump added to the teams' strength. The squad had its greatest advantage in the distances. Though dis- tance is one of the hardest events to prepare for, many of the runners are dedicated and willing to sacrifice the time and energy needed to be a good runner. THIS PAGE clockwise: running the two mile, Karen Kuss starts the last lap. Placing first, Jaime Hill Breaks the tape. Natalie Burks picks up the pace with one lap to go.
