Jim Passalaqua George Chastain Chris Hannah Jeff Koppelmaa Mike Tomasco Ivan Clarke Kris Schaefer John Barchic Mike Marshall Joyce Degan Decathalon Team On Saturday, November 21, at Peidmont Hills High School, Santa Clara County held its first Academic Decathalon. Santa Teresa triumphantly placed third out of twenty-five schools at the grueling all-day event, and placed higher than any other school in the district. The ten different competitive categories were English literature, fine arts, physical and biological sciences, social science, mathematics, career education and awareness, essay, speech, interview, and an exciting superquiz on the subject of energy. Members of the successful team were John Barchie, George Chastain, Ivan Clarke, Chris Hannah, Jeff Koppelmaa, Mike Marshall, and Mike Tomasco. Unlike last year’s state champions Palo Alto High School, who were given a year to prepare for this competition, Santa Tersa’s decathalon team had only three weeks to prepare themselves, in addition to keeping up with unusually demanding class loads. Nevertheless, these Saints put forth an outstanding performance of academic excellence. Decathalon 191

Amending and rewriting the school constitution was a pretty big job. I can honestly say, we did a great job! I hope the Supreme Courts in the future are as successful. Esprit The Esprit (meaning “Spirit” in French) is the offical newspaper of Santa Teresa High School. It is published once a month and has a circulation of 2,500. The staff is a motley crew of twenty-four budding young journalists who put in long hours of hard work to make the Esprit one of the best school newspapers in the district. Four members of the staff (Robert Andersen, Karin Mattos, Jennifer Mulcaster and Mike Steinberg) have been accepted to the National Quill and Scroll Society, an honorary organization for high school journalists. “I am proud to be part of such a quality operation,” says Editor-in-Chief Robert Andersen. “Everyone has contributed a great deal to make this year’s Esprit the best paper ever.” Top Row: Chad Brivkalns Mike Steinberg Karin mattos Ginaia Bernardini Karyn Neklason Jennifer Mulcaster Adam Larson Jill Winchester Tara Gilligan Advisor: Karyn Neujahr Kathryn Kuchenbrod Center Row: Ray Stevens Tamar Lezak Dennette Reeves Kim Mar Bottom Row: Denise Tyler Scott Thompson Robert (editor Bob) Anderson Cheryl Thomas Linda Emmorey 192 The Newspaper
